People can say what they want about Studebaker but Studebaker was way ahead of the curve in luxury, performance and styling. The problem was they were just too darn expensive to buy.

My old mechanic was a stock drag racer in the late 60s/70s. He had a Copo 427 Camaro, 427 stingray, and a 442 along with an Avanti. He told me outside of the Copo, the Aventi was easily the next fastest when you replaced the rear tires. What a strange car.

It's an all-American design by Bob Andrews, John Ebstein, and Tom Kellogg, supervised by Franco-American industrial designer Raymond Loewy. The original Studebaker engine allowed the blower to be mounted lower for a flatter hood, and Granatelli wouldn't let an R-3 (five liter supercharged) engine leave his shop 'til it had made 411 horsepower on the dyno.

The R3 initially made 335 bhp with the smaller 289-size displacement. With the 304.5-cid upgrade and consequently the 411 horses you mention it became the R4 engine. A second Paxton supercharger raised the output to 575 bhp. Both of the 5.0-liter engines were experimental.

Some real go power to go with that wonderful body! Purists might want that old 289, but the 327 Chevy made this thing a real rocket! ( as well as tons of parts to further mod the mill )

The power was available from the Studebaker R3 supercharged Granatelli mill that went 170 at Bonneville. Just got shut down early.

They built them from the late 60s into the 80s, but, like everything else, they lost their performance and became "personal luxury" cars. (Not counting the later versions, that no longer had Studebaker derived bodies, those lasted until around 2000). Weirdly, the Avanti II was not qualified as an AACA approved vehicle until recently. The club deemed it a "tribute" car, so it wasn't allowed to be shown at sanctioned events.

I've always dug Avantis...ever since our neighbor had a frost white one in about '67. Lot of folks think they're ugly...not me man. I'd LOVE to have one with the small block Chev and that Paxton blower. Too bad they never hardly publish the quarter mile times in these Lindemann reviews.

I used to love those cars. In the mid-1980s I worked at Crestmont Cadillac in Beachwood Ohio near Cleveland and we were an Avante dealer when Steve Blake owned the company. I think I probably broke a record as a young mid-20s guy, I sold 4 Avanti's in one year. I love those cars, I believed in them. It was before the convertible came out they were all hard tops. Two were standards and the other two or upgraded and off the top of my head I don't remember what the difference was but I believe they had Recaro seats in them. And of course I made a fortune on commissions.

The original Studebaker offering was no slouch! It was available with a R-3 304 CID supercharged engine that would hit 160 with ease! I had a Gran Turismo Hawk with the R-3 option. The Hawk was several hundred pounds heavier than the Avanti, but would peg the 160 MPH speedometer! As I recall my R-3 Avanti powered Hawk was one of less than 100 so equipped. Interestingly, all the Avanti engine options were available in the entire Studebaker line! Even the most plain jane models! That really gave one a chance to have a real "sleeper"! The Avanti engines did have some internal upgrades such as cam and other things not found in the stock 289 engines!

I’m so glad someone saved the Avanti! I believe there are actually three types. The first of course was the original. The second, like the test car was known as the Avanti II, plus I’m not sure if production stopped or not, but I have seen later models, like a 1984? 4 door Avanti, that was built on a Chevy platform with a 307!

Yes, Avanti came back to life in the 80's for a while, with 305 Chevy power. I saw one racing the Escort Showroom Stock Endurance Championship series in ~1984. It handled quite well because Herb Adams did the suspension tuning.

@@annecook9101 yea you might have a point there with the weird bumpers and the “softened” interior. But there were a small number of 4 dr’s made, that are actually quite sharp and actually hold less value!

This body design isn't Italian; it was designed by a team led by RAYMOND LOEWY. It was INSPIRED by Italian designs; however Mr. Lindemann gets a break on this because he was reviewing an early example and basing his information on the manufacturer's information.

Drew some cues from the '61 Lincoln (blade leading edges to the front corners) and Loewy's own custom BMW, Cadillac, and Jaguar coupes. Loewy's Avanti team included Bob Andrews and John Ebstein (who had fled the Nazis in the late thirties), both of whom were long-time Studebaker designers, and Tom Kellogg, a brilliant young designer with a fine eye for a good line and experience designing Fiberglas hulls for speedboats. If you look at an original Avanti, you'll have a hard time spotting even one straight line among the compound curve surfaces.

This is not a Studebaker. It’s an Avanti 2.. studebaker stopped making vehicles in America December 1st 1963. I hate it when people say the avanti 2 or the avanti motor co cars are Studebakers..

Well, it's either an Avanti II or a Studebaker Avanti. The "Italian body design" was styled in Palm Springs, California by three American designers working under the leadership of French born Raymond Loewy. the cars were expensive and Studebaker had production problems that made it impossible for them to meet the demand upon the car's introduction. It was widely liked for its styling but was truly a Lark in a gilded cage which was an inauspicious beginning. Despite the chassis limitations, Studebaker was able to make a good handling car and the addition of standard caliper disc brakes was inspired. I like the car, but the video was nonsense.

Hmm maybe I figured out my own question. I always wondered why they looked like they sit a little high in the nose. Since the 327 was 100 pounds lighter, did they keep the same front springs? I’d guess yes.

Newman & Altman didn't like the genuine Avanti's "droop-snoot" look (which was good for allowing less air under the car), so they changed the body mounts, IIRC, to get it level. Of course, it was no longer going to be the fastest production car, but they owned the factory, and could build it the way they wanted.

A normal 327 4bbl 2 dual exhaust makes 300-350hp add the blower and I'd guess 350-425.

They weren't absorbed. They merged with Packard in the late 50's and stumbled along until 1966, then went out of business. The Avanti was their big attempt at igniting interest in the brand by injecting exotic design. I think the body style has stood the test of time.

@@andyharman3022 You're also mistaken. Studebaker did not go out of business after 1966. They ended the automotive division and focused on their other holdings that they had been acquiring since 1959. These included Franklin appliances, STP products, Gravely tractors, and Onan generators. The Studebaker Corporation continued at least until the early 2000s. I think the last remnants of it finally died recently.

Studebaker's Board of Directors allowed an experiment to continue building the cars at their Canadian plant in part to avoid lawsuits from franchised dealers but also because the break even point was bout 20,000 cars which they thought they could meet with the smaller plant. They didn't produce quire enough cars - got close - but the car business isn't horseshoes. Their other businesses were producing profits. They went in the right direction.

Studebaker's finances were terrible but Packard, unwilling to deal with the far more successful American Motors, did not review Studebaker's financial situation sufficiently. Had a few less egos been in the way, all might have survived. AMC remained independent until acquired by Chrysler in 1987.

Corvette 327's came in 250, 300, 350, 365, and 375hp. The HP rating of this supercharged engine 300hp, ok I get why they would use the lowest compression engine but why bother when the 365 was only listed as cost $129.15 more back then? Only $107.60 the top hydraulic lifter version.

I really love these muscle cars and even more the ships of the 50s, but their handling is absolutely horrible! Even 10 HP are too much for these chassis! A Citroen 2 CV is in corners like a racing car compared to this extremely dangerous handling!

How did it do over 170 miles per hour on the salt and become the fastest production car in the world if it handled so bad And was so dangerous? I don't think of everyone heard of one of these rolling over or crashing.

@@7x779 Well, I love these cars, but leave springs, rigid axle on the rear, drum brakes,. 70% of the weight on the front axle etc. are not the best equipment for well handling cars.

Chevy Avanti II is what they should have named this. After Studebaker folded in 1964, they continued making Avantis in Canada, but didn't refer to them as Studebakers... Just a little bit of background on Avantis. Bud Lindeman always had really good reviews on automobiles, and this was one of them. R.I.P. Mr. Lindeman!

Not quite. When Studebaker shut down operations in South Bend (the company never did fold), it sold the rights to the Avanti, the left over parts, and part of the factory to Leo Newman and Nate Altman, the people who owned the largest Studebaker dealership in South Bend. They formed Avanti Motor Corporation and started building Avanti II's in 1965. Studebaker kept building sedans and wagons in Canada through the 66 model year.

Yes, but after 1985 the new models no longer had Lark underpinnings, and were basically body modified Monte Carlo's (later Caprice and Mustang chasis were used). The final president got busted running a Ponzi scheme.
