The darkest episode of Hungarian football was played out here in the buildings between Fő Street and Gyorskocsi Street. 19 times Hungary international footballer, Sándor Szűcs was executed here on the 4th of June 1951. Although the official certificate lists the place of death at 70-78 Fő street, the actual hanging probably happened at the prison wing’s courtyard located in Gyorskocsi street.
This tragic story was told by historians, journalists, and filmmakers after the fall of communism in Hungary. The footballer and his secret lover, singer Erzsébet Kovács were entrapped. The couple was tricked into an attempted defection by the ÁVH (Hungary’s secret police during the communist era) and they were arrested at Nagytilaj 60 kilometers off the border. Since he was an employee of The Minsitry of Interior and he tried to defect while armed, Sándor Szűcs was sentenced to death because of a never been publicly declared law. His partner was sentenced to four years in prison.
