It was Buddy Holly and the Crickets. He was creative like Prince in that he wrote songs, played different instruments, and innovated many new sounds into music. He certainly popularized the hiccup sound you refer to although it had been around. The Beatles adopted the insect name due to Holly's Crickets. Buddy was a huge talent that accomplished so much in a short time. Watch the Buddy Holly story starring Gary Busey to get a real appreciation of him. It is a really good movie!!!

Buddy Holly was one of the most influential musical artists ever. Little known fact. No Buddy Holly no Beatles. First single ever released by the Beatles when they were called the Quarrymen was a cover of Buddy Holly “That’ll be the Day.” The Beatles got their name from Buddy Holly and the Crickets. (Crickets/Beatles) That’s why in Don Macleans “American Pie” there are Beatles references “Sargeants Played a Marching tune” (Sargeant Pepper) and “Lenin read a book of Marx.” (That was a double Entendre by Maclean John Lennon and Vladimir Lenin)

Buddy Holly is the singer. The song was shortened slightly, removing the guitar instrumental part. Buddy died at 22 yet was extremely influential. The Beatles loved him. Everyone covered him including the Rolling Stones and, yes, The Grateful Dead. Black Sabbath stole a verse for their song N.I.B. His later bassist was a young Waylon Jennings. And of course, he inspired Weezer.

Buddy Holly was one of the early pioneers of 1950's rock & roll. His style was influenced by gospel, country & rhythm & blues acts. He wrote a lot of songs & did some great covers during his short life. "Maybe Baby", "Peggy Sue", "Bo Diddley", "Everyday", "Oh, Boy!", "Not Fade Away", "Rave On", "It's So Easy", "True Love Ways", "Raining In My Heart", "Listen To me", "Well All Right", "It Doesn't Matter To Me" etc. He was only 22 when he died in a plane crash along with Ritchie Valens & The Big Bopper. Fun Fact: When Elvis "The Pelvis" appeared on the Ed Sullivan show, he was filmed from the waist up so his trademark gyrations wouldn't be seen. Fun Fact: Sullivan was the first in the U.S. to have the Beatles on. He was in England and was at the airport when they were coming back from Germany. The crowd was WILD. Buddy was brilliant, and he was hugely influenced by Elvis! Sonny Curtis, a member of the Crickets, remembers two things that happened in 1955 that turned Holly’s head around: "One was meeting Bob Wills at the Clover Club, in Amarillo; the other was when Elvis Presley came through Lubbock." Both were influences on Holly's vocal style. "Everything changed for Buddy when Elvis came to Lubbock five different times in 1955. “What is certain beyond any doubt, is that when Elvis Presley hit Lubbock in 1955, he transformed all the C&W pickers in Buddy's circle into rockers". 'Without Elvis,' Buddy once said, 'none of us could have made it." Holly and Curtis - both around seventeen at the time - The two of them had opened the January 2nd, 1955, show, so they had backstage privileges, which included talking to Elvis and “getting right up in his face.” Elvis had recorded “That’s All Right (Mama)” on Sun Records, and Holly was already a big fan...The day after the show, according to Curtis, he and Holly started “playing Elvis full tilt.”

Took a while back then because at the time the cemetery didn't have a sign at the entrance to find his grave easily. I also went on a trek to find places around the town where Buddy lived and where he performed. By the time I got to Lubbock, his family's home had been demolished the year before I moved there. Nothing but land remained. Made me very sad. However, one bright spot was finding the club where Buddy and Curtis played and saw Elvis perform. As of 1983 it was still standing and in use. Of all the first generation of rockers in the 1950s (Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Bill Haley, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and Carl Perkins), Buddy is my favorite. An inspiring singer, guitarist, producer and a phenomenal songwriter. He has to be one of, if not the most influential artist in rock n' roll history, at very least from a songwriting perspective. If it wasn't for him, the wave of 60s groups coming out of the UK (especially The Beatles) wouldn't sound the way they do, so dynamic and with a emphasis on the electric guitar. I just cannot imagine what rock after Buddy died would've sounded like without him. Not anywhere near as good, I suspect. Jamel, please check out 'True Love Ways', a sweeping, gorgeous ballad he recorded not too long before he died. When I get married someday, I will have that song playing at my wedding. A lot of British musicians particularly loved Buddy Holly because unlike Elvis Presley he wasn't impossibly good looking, he looked just like a regular guy, but on digging deeper they found out that he mostly wrote his own songs -- and just listen to this little combo, they're a complete band and he's part of it. So appealing on so many creative levels. And really when you listen to Buddy Holly's music today, it sounds far less dated than a lot of 50's music. The new Fender Stratocasters were partly responsible, that bright rhythm guitar sound pre-dated the jangly 60's. There was just so much to like and to be inspired by. And to think that he was only 22 years old when he died. What a tragedy, but at the same time, what an incredibly rich body of work he left behind.

The Ed Sullivan Show was a variety show on Sunday Evenings. Many of the singers had to do shortened version on the show. Ed got the Beatles to come to the USA and perform on his show.

For more in-depth story of Buddy Holly, checkout The Buddy Holly Story starring Gary Busey as Buddy Holly, Charles Martin Smith & Don Stroud. All the actors learned to play their characters instruments, so as to lend more realism to storyline....

Rest in peace, Buddy Holly. You passed well before your time. The world will never know what other wonders you might have created. The music world is forever diminished by you tragically short presence.

You need to listen to Buddy's other great hit songs such as Maybe Baby, Words of Love, That'll Be The Day, True Love Ways, and It Doesn't Matter Anymore. Those tunes were covered by later soloists or groups. The Beatles did a cover of Words of Love very early in their recording career. That'll Be the Day became a huge hit for a very young Linda Ronstadt. Paul McCartney did a more recent cover of Maybe Baby. Literally hundreds of artists have done covers for most of Buddy's music over the course of the last 61 years. The band behind Buddy is called The Crickets and when Paul McCartney and John Lennon formed their band, eventually they settled on a tribute name to call themselves The Beatles. Buddy Holly and the Crickets were one of the first Rock and Roll white bands to ever perform at the famous Apollo Theater in NYC.

That was The Ed Sullivan Show. Ed Sullivan was the first to air the Beatles live in the US. He showed Elvis, the Rolling Stones, George Carlin, and so many others that other shows wouldn't invite on. He wasn't the hippest guy in the world, but his show did seem to understand the cultural trends of the day. I see you also did a reaction to "Not Fade Away," famously covered later by the Rolling Stones. Looking forward to that.

Buddy Holly and the Crickets (story behind that). Many legendary rock hits. Peggy Sue, Maybe Baby, That'll be the day, Everyday its a gettin closer, Peggy Sue got married, many more. All these super hits were recorded in less than 2 years before the plane crash. The entirety of his recording career..

Probably the most unassuming of early rock stars. He looked like a math teacher. Elvis Costello in his early career somewhat resembled him. Visitors to the site of his deadly crash will encounter a sign in the shape of eyeglasses guiding them to the location.

This was "The Ed Sullivan Show" which was a classic old variety show - one of the very first, actually - that ran for 24 years. I'm surprised you didn't already know about it. Most of the biggest Legends of Rock and Roll had their debuts on it: Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Janis Joplin, and so many others. As far as the hiccuping goes I thought you were going to say Michael Jackson because he actually did it far more than Prince ever did and was much more obvious about it too. Rest In Peace to all of these legendary entertainers.

That was the Ed Sullivan Show, as in the Ed Sullivan Theater where Dave Letterman was and now Stephen Colbert is filmed. Look him up, there are a lot of great moments on the show, the Beatles first US appearance was on that show. Elvis wiggled on that show. The Doors were banned for saying higher on that show,. You could do months of reactions just on performances from that show. On the flip side, Buddy Holly was one of the greats. Peggy Sue Got Married is a movie starring Nick Coppola, who would change his name to Nick Cage to separate himself from his uncle soon after. Buddy Holly was one of the greatest. History would be very different had he not died in that plane crash. Fun fact, Waylon Jennings was one of Buddy Holly's Crickets and was supposed to be on that plane, but The Big Bopper had the flu and asked for his seat, which he gave him. Had Jennings gone, we would never have had the Dukes of Hazzard theme..

It was Buddy Holly and the Crickets. One of the reasons why songs were so short is because television was live and you had to have you song fit in the time you were given. And a show like Ed Sullivan were that clip came from had sometimes a dozen acts per show. So you had to dazzle the audience as soon as you stepped on stage.
