It didn’t happen with Ray Charles who was able to not only take charge of his own music but his masters something even Sinatra had not been able to accomplish as well as switching from blues to country western another first for a black singer musician which he did because it had so much soul and had many of the same subjects as R&B love and cheating drinking and bars and cheating on each other’s partners. Well. I wrote music in the industry. The ones who wrote the music are not the touring musicians. The touring musicians are not on the album. Studio recordings are mostly done in home studios now. Sometimes by just one person. When I found a way to make my voice sound different and change the person behind the vocal I found a new sense of purpose in recording the entire thing. The entire thing which means everyone in the industry is just one person.

Being a huge Buddy Holly fan I clicked on to this video and after a few minutes could no longer watch it. After reading the following responses, I agree that Buddy Holly was not only a talented and gifted musician but also that of a composer. Although he died a tragic death at such an early age, his influence on the music industry has left a huge impact which is still enjoyed today 64 years after his death. Some of the comments here are made in error. Norman Petty was nothing but a crook and took advantage of Buddy and the Crickets. After Buddy's and the band's disastrous experience in Nashville, they were determined to never allow the music industry to have complete control over their music. Petty gave them the freedom to pursue their music after they agreed to give him credit as co-writer to any songs written by the group. This would not only give Petty the rights to promote their music but to collect any royalties from record sales as a song writer even though he never wrote any of their music that was recorded. When Holly's ambitions to further expand led him to New York, Petty convinced the three members of the Crickets to remain in the Lubbock and Clovis area and not to follow Holly. Buddy allowed the band to keep the name and all of the royalties made by the group on the Coral record label were tied up by Petty forcing Holly to seek legal intervention to release his share of his earnings. With no money coming in and being married with a baby on the way, Holly was forced to join the Winter Dance Tour until he could join a tour the next spring that was scheduled for the UK where his records were more popular than here in the states. The Winter Dance Party tour was poorly planned and scheduled during one of the coldest winters to grip the Midwest in years. Several of the buses used for transportation would continually break down forcing the musicians to use an old converted school bus that had little to no heat. Carl Bunch, the drummer for Buddy Holly's backup group suffered extreme frost bite to his toes that caused him to be hospitalized and unable to complete the tour. When the group reached Clear Lake for their performance, Buddy was determined to charter a flight in order to arrive at their next destination well ahead of schedule to get some sleep and to get to the laundromat to clean his clothes. A flight was chartered from the Dwyer flying service in Mason City, Iowa and there was room for two other passengers. The two other seats were for Holly's band members, Waylon Jennings and Tommy Allsup. According to previous interviews made by Dion DiMuchi, Buddy had approached him to inquire if he was interested in one of the seats. Dion declined the offer since his share of the flight which was $36.00 was the exact amount that his father paid monthly for their apartment rent in New York City. When the Big Bopper heard that Holly had chartered a plane for him and his band, he went to Jennings and asked him if he could purchase his seat on the plane since he had the flu and wanted to get some rest along with the Bopper being uncomfortable on the bus due to his large body frame and the small seats. Jennings told Richardson (Big Bopper) that he did not care as long as Buddy did not care. Ritchie Valens then approached Holly after hearing about the flight after the show, asking if he could have a seat on the plane. Holly told him that Tommy Allsup had the last seat and he would have to ask him which Allsup originally refused. Valens accompanied the group of Holly, Richardson and Allsup to the Mason City airport where Valens was still trying to convince Allsup to give up his seat on the plane. Once at the airport Allsup agreed to a coin toss with Valens for the seat, which Valens won. Allsup then gave Holly his wallet which contained his identification in order for Holly to pickup some mail for Allsup at the Morehead. Minnesota Post office. This will contradict the version of what Dion DiMuchi has given during interviews in the past where he lost a coin flip with Valen's. I dont know how he could lose a coin toss when he refused to pay Holly the share of the flight and never had a seat. Allsup's account of the story was also backed up by the Surf Ballroom manager, Carroll Anderson that drove the group to the airport after the show and was the one that was notified the next day to identify the singers bodies at the crash site. There were also comments made about the pilot's actions regarding the crash. The pilot Roger Peterson, was a married 21 year old father and local resident. He had 52 hours of dual instrumental training and passed his written exam but failed his instrument flight exam nine months prior to the crash on February 3, 1959. His previous CAA physical exam was also nine months prior to the crash. Peterson was certified only in visual flight rules and clear weather. He had been a pilot for approximately five years. Peterson had failed to submit his flight plan prior to takeoff and indicated that he would after the plane departed the airport. The weather at the time was 15 degrees with a 36 mph wind and light snow. The CAA final report indicated that Peterson may have flown into an area of complete darkness with a lack of visual horizon that caused him to become confused and disoriented making him rely upon flight instruments. They listed the cause of the crash on pilot error . The final report did not list or indicate any icing conditions that may have contributed to the crash in which the Weather conditions were right for this occurring. I never read any precautions taken prior to departure to prevent this from happening. For years there were a lot of conspiracies rumors regarding the crash including that Buddy Holly had convinced the pilot of allowing him to fly the plane since Holly had taken previous flying lessons. This was debunked since all three passengers were thrown completely from the fuselage and onto the frozen farm field.. Peterson's body was found entangled in the fuselage in the pilot's seat. Another conspiracy was that Holly pulled a gun, which he was known to carry and was forcing the pilot to allow him to fly the plane. Another far fetched rumor was Holly pulled the gun and was forcing the pilot to return back to the airport because of the deteriorating weather conditions. There were rumors that one to three shots were fired and that one of those shots may have struck JP 'Big Bopper' Richardson causing the plane to crash. This rumor circulated especially when Holly's gun was found in the spring by the farmer tilling the ground near the crash scene. The gun had been discharged once but the investigation revealed that the farmer that found the gun fired one round to see if the gun was still operational. In 2007 Jay Richardson, the son of the Big Bopper had his fathers body exhumed to put all rumors to rest regarding his fathers death. A forensic anthropologist confirmed that the cause of death to Richardson was from blunt trauma as previously reported by the coroner that assisted at the initial crash scene. The only autopsy that was performed on the four fatalities was that of the pilot. There was a comment about the glasses that Buddy Holly wore and these were found by Sheriff Jerry Allen in some old files on February 29, 1980. The frame was still intact but the lenses were missing. The glasses were eventually returned to Holly's widow, Maria Elena in which she later donated to the Buddy Holley Center in his hometown of Lubbock, Texas. Several comments have been made about Waylon Jennings lying about his seat on the plane. Waylon never flipped a coin with either JP Richardson or Ritchie Valens. Jennings voluntarily gave his seat to the Bopper and when Holly learned that Jennings would be staying behind, Holly jokingly told Jennings that he hoped his old "bus freezes up" in which Jennings last words to Holly were, "Well I hope your old plane crashes". Jennings was devastated when he heard about Holly's death and he stated that he was unable to pick up his bass guitar or sing for years because he blamed himself for the crash. Waylon would later go on to have a very successful career in the music industry and later wrote and recorded a tribute to his friend Buddy Holly called 'Old Friend'. I realize this is quite lengthy but as I previously stated, I'm a huge Buddy Holly fan and wanted to correct some of the comments made here about Buddy and the last tour. To all the Buddy Holly fans out there if you have never been to Clear Lake, Iowa and you have the chance, I would highly recommend it. The Surf Ballroom is still standing and has been restored to resemble the ballroom to its original appearance including the stage where the three musical icons played their last earthly performance. The pay phone that was used by both Buddy and Ritchie Valens to call home before departing on their flight still stands. The Surf Ballroom will host an annual event every year during the first weekend of February to honor the three musicians. A tribute marker was placed in front of the Surf Ballroom acknowledging the names of the three artists that died along with the pilot for everyone to see and remember the lives that were lost that night. Holly's widow Maria Elaina objected to the name of the pilot being included on the monument. The crash site is just miles west of Clear Lake and one fan created a monument of a guitar and three silver 45 records listing the names of the deceased musicians along with the recording labels that each recorded on. This monument is on private property and the owner of the land does not mind if you walk along the fence line to pay your tribute at the scene of the plane crash. If you are fortunate to go to the site just be respectful since it is on private property. 'Rave On' to all the Buddy Holly fans out there along with those of the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens.

That's your clue this entire script was written by AI, and not just voiced over by one as in previous years. I'm guessing the AI that wrote this script read later on in the wiki article it was summerizing that Buddy Holly was "born again" as in evangelical Christianity. Being a stochastic parrot, it doesn't know how weird it sounds to refer to someone biological birth as "born the first time," or likely is even unable to contexually comprehend that being "born again" is spiritual euphamism, and not a literal thing. Stupid computer really thinks that Holly fell out of two different holes. The only thing more dumb than AI are the people who are in awed reverence of it as anything but a glorified autocomplete which still have limitation that are obvious to anyone with a half a brain. Paused video 44 seconds. Responded to this comment. Will likely tag video as "do not recommend channel." No AI slop for me. If I want a wikipedia article, I'll just go read the damned thing myself.

As someone who is a family relative of Waylon Jennings, that I can more then confirm your comment about Waylon and how much it greatly effected him ,for years. Waylon came close to walking away from music ,it differently changed his whole life and everything inside him. Not a day, went by that Buddy wasn't with Waylon. They were very close not just as musicians, but kindred friends & Brothers. May they both R.I.P. We lost to Great Men, way to soon. Take care & my best to you and yours.❤❤🙏🙏

I grew up in the 60s & 70s. Holly was nearly forgotten - or at least, ignored - when I was in my teens, until "The Buddy Holly Story" came out in '78. Back then, about the only Holly songs I'd heard were covers by James Taylor & Linda Ronstadt, and I didn't even know he was the one who wrote them. When I saw the movie, I was amazed to realize that I knew all the songs by heart. I was born in 1959, a few months after the plane crash. I imagine Holly's songs were playing constantly on the radio during those months. My mother was going through a breakup with my father while she was pregnant with me, and she loved music. (She played piano, herself.) I think she must've been playing Buddy Holly tunes during the last few months of her pregnancy with me, mourning the breakup with my dad, and I subconsciously learned those songs before I was even born. BTW, I ended up getting a music degree & spent my life as a professional musician. Coincidence? Maybe. Or maybe not. 😉

I too grew up in the 60s and 70s and I knew about Buddy Holly, for me he was not forgotten, the DJs on Radio One and Capitol Radio played him often, fair to say not as often as the latest hits but he was always heard on the golden oldies. Being a then avid fan of music I fell in love with his song True Love Ways, to this day and even as I write this, it still brings me to tears. That poor young man having so much to look forward too, with amazing talent and sweetness in his music was robbed of a great incredible future by fate.
