Saw him twice, fantastic both times in Maine. First time was at the Expo Portland, Maine in the early Seventies The second time was supposed to be at University Of Maine, Gorham Campus but they moved the show to the high school next door because the stage wasn't big enough to accomdate two big bands. The Buddy Rich Big band and The Woodie Herman Band alternating. Between sets and and having the Steinway on wheels they just rolled that big ole' concert grand back and forth to its proper position on the banstand. It should have been recorded, and me and my band mates (although not above recording it covertly) didn't even think of it. Woodie's bass player was out of this world, btw. Everytime I think of it, I just want to kick myself, again, and again, and again, gan, gan. It had to be 1983, or 84'.

Tommy Newsom was from my hometown, Portsmouth, VA....my mom taught him in high school. He does a great job with what was Heinie Beau's original clarinet break. Notice how Tommy's chart sticks pretty close to Sy Oliver's original; nice touch having the whole sax section kick in with what was Don Lodice's original tenor solo. Dorsey did the same thing with "Marie" by the late 40s, w/ Bunny's old solo written out for the entire trumpet section. Buddy's kick-ass drums on the 42 original with TD.

So here's my memory of this performance of We'll git it. It was '86, my sophomore year in college. I'd seen this performance a few nights earlier but I skipped class with a friend to go watch this on his VCR. True Buddy didn't read. But during the swing era, not many drummers did. The drum "set" as we have come to know it, was still a new concept as the 30's rolled around. Arrangers had no idea how to write for it. So drummers had to have the instinct and the ears to figure out an arrangement and fit something in that worked to enhance it. Not taking anything away from BR. I knew guys that played on his band they all told me that the legend was true. Buddy could listen to an arrangement through one time, no matter how complex it was. Then sit behind the kit and play it perfectly.
