I had not only the opportunity to meet Buddy be he allowed me to play his drum-set. Afterwards we sat down and had a drink. He gave me a drum lesson at the table and gave me a pair of his sticks--which I have mounted to this day. He was so nice to me as well. As far as I'm concerned Buddy will always be the best drummer in the world.

Somebody summed it all up quite well by saying that when you were in the auditorium waiting for the Buddy Rich band to start playing, you knew that you were in the best place in the world.

The drums are vintage Slingerland Radio Kings that were refurbished for Buddy when he left Ludwig in 1983. He played this exact set until his death.

Buddy and Slingerland. Nothing better! These are mid 40s era. 3 ply. Mahog/Poplar/Mahog. Snare is 1 ply maple. 1/4 in thick. All brass rims. He died playing the drums of his youth. Cheers Buddy.

Awsome as always. This concert has been in my collection since 1986. We should all bow in the dust of a man who kept improving through his whole life, inspired millions of drummers, was an innovator and one of the most personal musical voices of our time. The way he plays here is musical, sensitive, driving and mature. Music/drumming is not about fast or slow. It is about communication, playing for the music and to express yourself through the instrument. Technique is just a tiny part of that.

Thanks so much for posting this. I've been trying to keep the Buddy Rich tradition alive in my own playing. He was a huge influence and always will be. There's just nothing out there like this on the music scene now.

Well said! If I was half as good now as Buddy was when this video was shot, I would be a very happy drummer! I've said it to anyone who will listen - I would rather watch Buddy warm up on a practice pad than watch most drummers out there do a solo!

How is it that this video has only 3156 views?!!? Shameful! And who was the fool who disliked this?! Buddy died a year after this video, yes he was not playing as fast but that is to be expected. But his rolls are silky smooth....great feel, charisma...the man WAS drumming! The King is dead. Long live the King!

First time i 've seen this, very nice, thanks for posting. Some people have said that Buddy slowed down and didn't play as well in his later years, i think this shows that he was still the best. I think anyone would like to play like this anytime, let alone when they were his age. His rolls were so perfect and seemless it is just rediculous.
