One of my first watches was the Invicta Pro Diver with blue dial and blue bezel. I've added many watches to my collection since then, but I still go back to my Invicta quite regularly. Value wise I feel the Invicta is offering something sincere and fairly across all those categories and will work for 10 years and if you go diving. Even if the Invicta is, in percentage terms, much more expensive than the Tevise, it's not really a lot in real world terms unless you're pinching pennies and the Invicta is a proper watch with a proper Seiko movement. Got my Skmei 1243 for AUD14 but I later found it going for AUD7!!) And the Invicta isn't a mixup. Wow! Amazing price for the Sub homage. I'd like to see someone else beat that price. Instead of the Invicta, I could buy three different Tevise models. They have a green dial that is totally awesome. Just think, for a $100 one could have an entire collection. Just curious are you from Hong Kong or the PRC? I am sure that with your background you can share more of these little gems.

Both are ok. Tevise is ok too, not bad for a 15$ piece, and it doesn't have the carving on the side and it has nicer second hand and dial. Btw, the Cyclop eye is horrible idea by rolex, heat it off as soon as possible. One more thing, Tevise has a very nice and compact box with a pillow that accommodates nicely two watches, I use it as an extra watch box, Seikos and other brands don't come up with a nice box like this, wow.

The cheap watches have their place. I just paid 14 dollars shipped for the Tevise. Thats less than lunch money! I chose the quartz because the spec for the 20 dollar mechanical was +/- 60 seconds per day. There is no need for such complication in a cheap thing I will wear while mowing the lawn or whatever. Will be fun to see how it compares to the the SKX I bought yesterday. I have plenty of watches but I just had to try it for fourteen dollars shipped. Why not?

Thanks for the comment Bert - king of the "bottom feeders" indeed, and the Invicta continues to impress to this day! The makeup of the company is a bit of a mystery, but it does seem that the controlling interest is US, which partly drives the design sensibilities and marketing - I believe they still have far more boutiques in the US than anywhere else? Regardless, it's a true mashup with Chinese, Japanese, Swiss and other inputs!

I honestly don't know where all the hate for Chinese watches come from. We are in 2018, not 1960. Yeah, they might not have the quality Swiss pieces have (Even though most Swiss pieces have many Chinese parts these days), but they are certainly not "cheap happy meal toys". I have a couple of cheap Chinese watches to compliment my vintage Swiss pieces. My vintage Swiss pieces are a Tressa "Lux" from the 1970s, A Harcyl from the 1950s and a Bulova from 1931. Both Invicta and the Chinese mushroom brands are made in the Far East, whether it being in China or Malaysia, it doesn't really matter. Quality of parts aren't the issue as they all share between the countries. The problem with Chinese watches, unless you are buying a Sea Gull (which beats a lot of watches) is the quality control. For every 6 workers in the Hangzhou factories who are great at their job, you've got 4 idiots who have never put a watch together in their life. These 4 shit watches will go out because there are literally no checks end of production line. Meanwhile in Malaysia you have those end of production line checks that stop bad watches going out. To be fair though, I've still heard many horror stories regarding Invicta even with these end of line checks. Chinese standard movements have really come up in the world and a well put together one will keep great time for years. However, what you should really do is get onto Aliexpress and find Chinese made watches with Miyotas in them. That would be a much better comparison. By the way, I'm pretty sure the Tevise has a stainless steel case too. Most watches in this day and age do. Even your shitty Armani and Daniel Wellington fashion watches do. Again, it is 2018 and not 1960. Stainless steel isn't an exotic material and a stainless steel case literally costs 50p to make.
@PerthWAtch

Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful comment Steven. You make some very good points, and I think the issue about QC checks in China vs Malaysia rings true to my experience. With regards to Chinese made watches with Japanese movements, well I've personally reviewed quite a truckload of these (I've lost count of the number) and they are certainly worth a look - Guanqin and Cadisen being foremost examples I would say. As for the case of the Tevise, I think there is merit to claims it's not steel - there are reports with pictures of the coating having worn or scratched off, revealing a different metal beneath. Cheers, Ivan.

I have the Pro Diver (the steel one, not the gold tone one). My issue with the Tevise is that it's really more of a replica, rather than an homage. If you can't even take it in the shower, how is it living up to anything like a diver? If you buy that with the idea that you're going to do anything but tell time with it under dry conditions, you're getting screwed. That's why I can't quite buy that the Value category should be anything higher than perhaps a 2. It's an automatic watch, at least, but as a tool watch, you're not getting the tool you think you are.
@PerthWAtch
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the thoughts Brian. The Tevise is not a dive watch, although it certainly is based on the looks of the Sub... the listing rates it at 30m which means that it should withstand splashing and rain exposure (a shower at a push) but functionally not more than that. So far it has held this up for me. Objectively, it is an automatic watch in a metal casing with a metal bracelet, finished with superficial good looks... that's what my value rating is based on. Seeing as there is no such thing as an automatic dive watch for $20, I can really only compare with non-divers, or more expensive pieces that are actual divers.
