Thanks Adam, I'm also using the EVA-1, particularly because it has the same kind of sensor as the Panasonic Varicam; I am in love with the colors that this beauty is producing.

Can I stay in the s35 5.7k mode and shoot 4k video up to 60p without having to go into the menu the change the sensor settings? Also, do I have to use variable frame rate or can I shoot in different frame rates that also include audio? On my s1h/gh6 I’ve never touched variable frame rate since I can shoot high frame rates in camera. Is that possible on the Eva up to 60p? Also, is switching frame rates really a slow process? Is the button layout enough or customizable to avoid menus? Is ditching the screen possible and just use a monitor to operate the camera? Thanks! They are so cheap now and seems like an easier camera to operate over my bs1h. I’m hoping to replace the bs1h for the Eva but I’m not sure. Thanks!

I sold my EVA1 about a year ago and have since move onto the Sony ecosystem. If I remember correctly, you do have to change the system frequency to move between 24p and 60p. You will have audio in 4k60p. It is a slow process. That's one of the really annoying things about this camera compared to modern mirrorless. For example on my Sonys I can switch between 24p and 60p with one button press and be shooting in 1 second. It is possible to ditch the screen entirely and use a monitor, but you'll need two monitors in order to settings and record raw. I do love this camera, it just didn't work for my shooting style over time.

Make all the audio changes by pressing the home button. You can basically only use the provided monitor as a touchscreen for changing stuff anyway.

Thank you for this video man! I went from a Canon R6 and 5D Mark IV as my A & B cam, then I realized how much better the Panasonic S5 was as far as value for the dynamic range and colors you get, also 5.7 raw from an external recorder. I recently sold all my canon gear except my EF 70-200 2.8 and I just rented a EVA1 for next week, thinking that's what I'm going to buy used next. Time will tell I guess, I've been between getting a S1 for the 6K and extra stabilization or getting an EVA mainly to look more legit when I show up on a job with it or just waiting for a good deal on ebay or somewhere for an S1 and getting both. IDK. Do you still use the EVA in your normal workflow? I would love to hear your thoughts.

@@jacksonpetit1983 from time to time fellow videographers and media companies in my area ask for me to assist them, run a second camera, hold heavy duty lights etc. The one that hires me the most has been doing freelance videography for 10+ years has an eva along with a small mirrorless camera and that's what made me look into it. I got to use it a few times on his shoots and rented it a time or two. Now I own one, the eva is absolutely great and yes for run and gun the s5 is my first choice but showing up to a shoot with the eva. People look at you with respect, I filming a music video in public at a college campus with it last week and people were saying sorry for being the background of the shot when I was using the EVA. you can get an eva for a good price right now used. Will you have a better time with the c70 and fx6 yes, but I couldn't justify the price atm. Also I was worried the c70 would replace my s5 too much.

@@WithATwist Thank you for the reply. I have eyed this camera for years. I have owned several camera over the years and currently an S1 and Sony A7IV. I prefer the image of the S1 but often finding myself needing a proper camera in some shooting situations. Will see what the end of the year brings.

What connector does the monitor connect to this camera, I mean standard and not HDMI?

Dang BM! That's really messed up about such a great camera failing and the company not willing to do anything. Not even refer you to 3rd party technicians. But, you got a solid camera there that's older but kicks enough ass to remain relevant and useful. Hope all gets better. Happy shooting.

Thank for this. I love the image from the Eva-1, but I'm wondering whether I should invest in the EVA-1 setup as you described, versus Panasonic S1/S5 with a cage, DMW-XLR1 and the works? The cost comes to about the same, and the S1 offers 6K full frame 12 bit BRAW to the BM Assist, and you get full frame, IBIS etc

It really depends on how you like to shoot. For their size and weight, the S1 and S5 probably have the best looking images you can get plus all those other benefits you mention. I'll say this: I personally wouldn't buy an EVA1 before I buy the S1.

Wonderful review. I picked up a Eva1 recently. Does the Blackmagic Video Assist work only with Sdi cable? I am planning to buy one for a feature film and I need the highest quality out. Any points to be noted?
@AdamMurtland

Awesome!! BRAW only works through SDI, but you can record ProRes from either SDI or HDMI. You'll want to figure out a good way to mount an SSD. It's difficult to find space to mount it to the video assist, so I mount it to the camera itself. The BRAW footage is fantastic. Really elevates the camera to another level. Q5 is the real sweet spot for file size and quality.

Great video. I'm tempted to look for a used Eva-1 as I feel the price brand new is over priced based on what is on the market now as well I feel Panasonic should be releasing a follow up to the Eva 1 or the s1h soon. Is the BRAW from the eva-1 10-bit or 12-bit?
@AdamMurtland
2 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. Brand new price is wayyy overpriced at this point. Buying an EVA1 used is the only way I'd recommend it. I also think if they do an EVA2 or whatever they call it, it will be full frame. The BRAW is 10 bit, but I haven't noticed a difference with 12 bit BRAW from other cameras.

Hey Adam ... wanted to ask you .. Im selling my GH5S x2 cameras .. now I bought BGH1 to try it out to replace x2 with my GH5S ... and I know EVA1 is something else and different .. the only thing I may not like is the lenses .. cause what makes me go or wanna switch GH5S to BGH1 is I have native quality lenses 10-25 Leica lenses ... wanted to know what do you use for your EVA?
@AdamMurtland
2 жыл бұрын
I use a hodge podge of EF mount lenses with my EVA1: Sigma 18-35mm, Sigma 50-150, Canon 24-105mm, Tokina 28-70mm, Rokinon primes, and a few other odd ones. I'd say if you have a good native m43 lens lineup, then stick with the BGH1 and maybe pickup that second one. Having two cameras that match perfectly is super useful. And, the switching costs of changing a lens kit completely or running with 2 lens systems is a big decision.

thank you for the review im also looking for a new cam since my Ursa Mini 4.6k died on its own ... I have the same experience with blackmagic I kept the camera safe and clean and the sensor failed outside of warranty like SO MANY OTHERS they had horrible customer service and now I have a $6,000 brick. I loved the camera and what I was able to do with it BUT I will never buy a blackmagic camera again.

I had the UMP G1. I absolutely loved that camera. Right at the end of a full day of shooting the sensor died on me. The screen went black and nothing I could do would bring the picture or menu back. I talked to Blackmagic support in the US and they said they no longer service the camera at all. I wanted to get another one, but I couldn't take the risk of another G1 failing on me.

@@joshdiditt *supposedly* the issue was with the sensor they used in the G1. So since the G2 uses a new sensor, perhaps it won't have the same issue. But, I just wouldn't want to be left in a similar situation in a couple years. The FX6 looks awesome!
