A good way to reduce erosion in your swale is to add rocks to it so that it looks like a dry riverbed. It takes a variety of sizes of rocks and it slows down the water, giving it a chance to soak into the ground. It adds visual interest to the area as well. I would have given the rose bushes a hard prune before digging them up. They will have a hard time supporting all the leaves now that the roots have been disturbed.

Thank you for your thoughts! My swale is so large that the cost of rocks would be a lot more than we want to spend. I love rocks, and love the idea though.

It would be a couple hours drive for you depending on exactly where in relation to Wilmington you are, but you could get a lot of free plants on April 27 in Havelock. Will see if I can share link. If that doesn't work look for city of Havelock annual plant swap. EVERYTHING IS FREE and we will have several expert exhibitors on hand. Event is at Havelock City Park from 10-noon.

Good job!! I like your garden and your ideas! You seem to have it under control, but I have seen people have less of a yard more of a garden, and it can definitely become over welming with plants, weeds and lots of work for the future. I think what would be a good idea is to plant some shrubs like sunshine ligustrum or loropetalum bushes or any shrubs that change color with the seasons. Planting shrubs along the pool area would help cut back on having to mow the grass along the pool. Just an idea: I know whatever you come up with will look great.

Hi there! Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. You are right! Just because there is less lawn, certainly doesn't mean less work for the gardener 😊 I also think shrubs are in order (and I do love sunshine ligustrum!) 🌞 💚

I love your garden and all your tips for saving money. We moved here three years ago zone 8a on the coast. I have been trying to start a garden but after being ill it is very difficult. Where did you get your greenhouse? Keep up the good work.

Thank you! I had a hard time getting my sandy soil to be nutrient-rich enough to have my plants thrive. It took a lot of trial and error to find out what would work. I'm very sorry to hear you were ill. That compounds the difficulty. I ordered my greenhouse from Harbor Freight. The price seemed right for the size, but I now know that you have to build a supporting structure inside or any amount of wind will bend the frame. Learning curve there, as well! 💚

Hard work, but well worth it when you are done 😊. Beautiful dark soil, did you amend it?

You are right - so worth it! I think the reason the soil over there is so rich is because it stays damp and isn't subject to the brutal sun like the rest of my yard. The mulch breaks down beautifully there, and I have lots of worms and great help in that way. ☺💚

Great idea for hiding things we all have & don’t want them seen. That last rose bush was a beast but you got it out , good job. Lots of work but it’s looking gorgeous

Hi Nicole, you are so hardworking , but you don t loose your enthusiasm. I wonder if you like pelargonium zonale. It is very easy to propagate , beautiful, loves full sun and from one really big pelargonium (also named as geranium ) you can make 10 little. I think it would be hardy in your zone. It doesn t need too much water. 💚

It's easy to keep up enthusiasm when it's only April 🤣🤣 No seriously, thank you. As you know, when you love the process, it's much easier to do the work. Geraniums are a fabulous idea!! I'm off to the garden center today to see what is part of the Spring sale, and they would be great to find! 😃

@@mycarolinagarden 🖕Good for you! I would let it to accomodate with the new location a week or 2 and then you cand propagate it in 2 ways: 1) you pinch a cutting from the plant and put it in soil or in a pot or 2)you keep the cutting in water until it made roots. I always did the propagation in soil. I love geraniums but I can t offer them eonugh sun and they were struggeling on my balcony with 3-4 hours of sun in the summer, that means they will adore your sunny location. 🌞

Much easier moving roses if you trim them back first. Your soil under the roses looked rich. Must have taken a lot of amendments to achieve that.

Trim them back and make it EASIER on myself?! 🤣 I know you're right, I just hated to do it since they were flowering. The soil where they were is probably the best I have. Sad, I know, since I moved them. All a process, and I love it. 😃

I feel you on the sheer amount of labor that goes into this kind of gardening, especially when you're undertaking a transformation. I'm in this boat and I'm a 1-person team. I'm exhausted just thinking about my projects for the weeks ahead 🫠
