I always wanted a piccolo snare. Ended up having three. All together, they don't buy a nice new one. But when you have a tendency to just take it home and see how it goes, well...
All cranked up to the reasonable limit, kinda what people expect from a snare that size. Gotta say that I've tried the low beefy tone on the "nickel over steel" one and it did sound very ok.
No eq, no effects. Two-channel (bass drum/snare top) recorded straight to the Zoom L12. Snare mic is a Shure SM57. Bass drum is a Pearl Session Elite 22x16. Sticks are PM Finesse Maple 5A.
Yamaha "Student" SK-285. 13x03 snare at a pawn shop. Original heads. Mostly Poplar or basswood.
Peace "Nickel over Steel". 13x3 1/2. The was my first piccolo. Got it out of "just a quick look at marketplace on a boring Saturday afternoon". It has upgraded heads and wire. Puresound and Aquarian Studio-X (with internal ring) hence the slightly drier overtones.
The Liquid Amber Pearl "Maple Shell" is where a logical people would start with the piccolo thing. It's 13x03 and has Puresound wires and Remo Ambassador. I expected more, but then I realized this is not the model that Jeff Porcaro used to play on.
