I have been using the Apollo for nearly a year and have never had a problem with it. I find it comfortable and warm. I've had it down to the upper 30's and never felt the cold ground. For the $ it's worth it. It has become my go to pad.

As someone that's 5'6", this pad just fits me. Anyone else that's taller by a couple inches will definitely find this pad too short. And the advertised 23" wide is also off, it's 21". For the price, it can't be beat.

Hey Zach! Thanks for your comment, man! At 6ft it works for me, and for the price I'm willing to go with a pad that isn't quite as long as I would like. HOWEVER, I discovered the Paria Recharge XL late last year and that is now definitely my new favorite budget winter pad! It's 23 inches wide, 75 inches tall, and 4 inches thick. BUT it is heaver at about 26ish ounces. But for the additional comfort, I think it's worth the weight. I did a video comparing the two if you're interested. Hey Hunter! That's awesome! Ya, a 1.5 inch pad doesn't do it for me, and I haven't even had my back fused! That sounds terrible. Went for the Paria Recharge...like it as much as my Nemo for comfort, which is saying a lot, considering I am 6 feet tall, over 215 pounds, and a side sleeper! There is no way the Gear Doctor can be honestly R rated over 5...the 40 D material insulates the pad? Then I can sleep on the floor of my tent and be cozy! Hah! Stuff a foam pad under it and you might be okay, but I know for a fact that doesn't work with my fake winter air pads by Ecotek and Klymit! From my humble experience, Pariah is by far the better choice! Keep up the good work for those of us who do not have the money to blow on totally outrageously priced gear!

@DoseofDirt
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Steve! I can't believe I forgot to mention this. The 5.2 R value is not an official ASTM rating, which is why I wanted to make sure I actually tested it in the cold before actually doing the review. And I recently picked up some thermometers I cause to record the temps outside, in the tent, and in my bag as I continue to test cold weather gear. I referenced this one against my experience on other pads I've used where I have definitely felt cold in the mid 20s. I've also recommended to the company that they submit for an official rating

Thanks for the review, It would be nice to see you laying on the pad and using the pump sack. I would definitely try using a quilt with pad straps which may help with sliding. Paria Outdoors has some good budget quilts or if you want to go cottage vendor I use a Hammock Gear and a Outdoor Vitals quilt. How is the valve system? any issues with leaking? I tried a budget winter sleeping pad from Light Tours, but the R value was way off. Thanks again!

Thanks, Darren! I really appreciate that feedback! I was feeling like I needed some more shots of me with the pad as well when I was editing, so you hit the nail on the head! 🤣 Ya, I've been eying the Paria Outdoors quilt, actually. My friend brought hat quilt on the backpacking trip I referenced in this video. The loft and warmth on that thing looks pretty incredible! The it has an anti leak valve, so it's easy to inflate without worrying about losing air, but than easy to deflate when it's time. No leakage issues so far! Ya, the r value is sometimes tough to trust on budget pads, which is why I probably won't even try the $30 winter pad I referenced. This one seems solid at an R value of 5.2. I want to do some more testing when it gets even colder and I'll let you know how that goes.

Nice review; the only things missing are: 1) how noisy is it? 2) how easy is it / how long to deflate?
@DoseofDirt
3 жыл бұрын
Hey! I definitely should have mentioned those things! As far as the noise goes, I would put it somewhere in the middle of pads I've used. It's definitely not the loudest, but there is a little noise when I roll around at night. Nothing that really disturbed my sleep, and I sleep fairly light when backpacking. As far as how long it takes to inflate/delate. I think the mummy style shape makes it easier since it requires less air. The pump sack makes it really easy. I would say it takes about 3-4 minutes with the pump sack and about the same time (but more effort) without the pump sack. The thickness (3.2 inches) means it requires more air, but I think that's well worth it. Deflating is super easy because you can just open up the valve, fold a few times long ways, and then rolling it up pushes the air out. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions! Thanks so much for watching!

However, one thing I’d like to ask ya. If you fully inflate the pad and sit on it, does your butt touch the ground? Great video Jeff! Hahaha I actually have the $30 Chinese pad you show briefly in this one! I can't speak to the R value of that pad but it's ultra wide and long. However, I think it weight about 3lbs or so so it's a clunker for sure. I've only ever lent it out to my cousin when we went car camping. I'd also say don't worry about the moisture/mold myth. Devin at Backcountry Exposure did a video last year debunking that one if you want to check that out. As we've already talked back and forth about, I don't think I'd be comfortable on this pad with the horizontal baffles and the mummy cut. I agree with you that they should make it longer and wider, maybe cut down on the denier to 30D to save some weight. Also dig the bloopers hahaha. I create very similar ones during shooting. It's tough folks! Also like the t-shirt!

I may still take the pump sack since blowing up pads can make me light headed after 15-20 miles on the trails! 🤣 Ya, if you don't like horizontal baffling this one isn't for you! It seems like an extra 4-5 inches on the length wouldn't add too much weight, and for a lot of people would make a big difference in the comfort department. This what they said about the method… I don’t like that it’s sort of a pinpoint test rather than the entire pad. So planning to sleep on it and the other on consecutive nights with some thermometers to really test it out. From Gear Doctors: “The R-Value is lab tested, and the method is not ASTM it’s another method called “Laser Flash” And this is how it works “The front side of the pad is heated by a short time light pulse, The resulting change on the other surface is measured by an IR sensor, Then the R-Value can be decided by analyzing the change of the temperature versus time curve”

The biggest thing that's keeping us from winter overnights is the cost. I haven't checked my facts on this, but I think it gets a little colder here than in UT... Especially at any elevation, and I'm not even sure an R value of 5 is enough. I'd have to ask one of the local guys that does tents on that (seems everyone is using hammocks these days). Temps over 45 we just use $10 air mattresses we picked up at Walmart, but we can also load up on blankets on a car camp. Aria is super hardcore though, no pad/mattress for her. She says if she wanted a soft bed, she'd stay home. 😕 Still doesn't solve for winter though.
@DoseofDirt
3 жыл бұрын
Dang man! Aria is a beast! Agreed on the cost of winter gear. I may be on a fool's errand trying to find budget friendly winter gear (even this budget winter pad is more than double the cost of the pads I use during the winter!) I would think that your temps definitely get colder than UT. Up in the mountains it gets a lot colder in UT, but may still not compete with where you are. If I find myself going in super cold weather, my plan is to put my Therm-a-rest z lite (closed cell foam pad with an r value of about 2) underneath this one to get a total R value of over 7, which is supposed to be good for just about any temps a human would even consider being outside in. You can get a very similar pad by a company called Redcamp (I think) that's only $20-$30, so combined you have r value of 7+ for just $110-$120, which I think is pretty dang good. The Therm-a-rest pad that has an R value of over 7 is something like $230! 😱 And the R value you need will vary a lot. I'm a fairly warm sleeper (sounds like Aria must be as well! 🤣). The numbers don't add up. If they did this would be the number 1 or 2 pad on the market at 150.00. If you weighed it then its 17 ozs - if it is 17 ozs at that size its completely uninsulated and probably not 40D at all. Id bet that its a 30D uninsulated neoair knockoff that isn't made as well. If you didn't get cold you got lucky or have a hell of a bag. In fact the company only boasts an arbitrary high R value....which would make them the only manufacturer of pads to do so and not even mention what form of insulation they use. "horizontal air baffles preventing the cold ground from sucking your heat away" is a nonsensical statement and speaks nothing to insulation. Your heat is radiated through the plastic in the pad by conduction and through the air baffles by convection but its going straight into the ground unless something stops it. Theres a test for that....try using it as a pot holder. I wouldn't trust this product as far as I could throw a person holding it. And thats only because of the seemingly false claims.

Hey Neda! Thanks for you comment on this. I definitely hear what you are saying. I’ve been wanting to do some more thorough testing with this pad and some actual temperature measurements. I just ordered a Paria Recharge XL and am looking forward to doing a side by side comparison. It is 9 ounces heavier but indicates a slightly lower r value (but i think it is a true r value rather than an estimated r value). . It’s definitely possible that I got lucky on that previous trip or maybe the temp didn’t get as low as the info I found, but it definitely felt cold. I have some thermometers now I’m going to use as part of the testing to try to get more solid than ‘I felt warm’ which is just so subjective. I’ve also tried to see if there is a way to get it officially r value tested but haven’t found anything yet. Would be curious what winter pad you use right now??
