Buyende District in Eastern Uganda and Busoga Sub region to be exact is a depiction of a place living in isolation and almost Desolate yet with potential to blossom. Hidden beneath a veneer of poverty and hunger Shanty villages and hamlets riffed with dirt and the scorching sunshine that burns inside is what welcomes you. Whereas the place is located in Busoga and predominantly dominated by the Basoga it is a collection of different peoples Different Cultures and different identities but what units them is the Abject Poverty.
Buyende is Boardered by Amolata District, Kaberamaido District to the North, Serere District to the North East, Kaliro District to the East , Luka District to the North east, Kamuli District to the South & Kayunga District to the west.
The District Headquarters at Buyende are located approximately 30 km by road north of Kamuli. The nearest larges town, which is also the main Entry. The name Buyende is derived from the pioneer settler Nyede a popular chief who settled in the place and the name lives on after his death . Buyende is a key place in the history of Busoga Kingdom and it is widely believed that the Pioneer Basoga Lived and originated from here. Around the turn of the 16th Century, the baisengoobi clan from Bunyoro gained power, Mukama Namutukula of the royal babiito family of Bunyoro is said to have left Bunyoro as part of the kingdom’s expansion policy travelling East across lake kyoga with his wife Nawudo a few servants and a dog, landing and IYINGO in present day Buyende District.
Besides the District administrative units and Sprouting retail shops, the town looks dilapidated and remains an eye sore and this spreads throught the entire district.
Buyende was created by the act of parliament and began functioning on 1st July 2010. Breaking away from Kamuli District it has a total land area of 1975sq of this 708sq covers the waters of lake kyoga and river nile 1267sq is of dry land and streches 82 km East to west from irundu to Bukungu.
Its strategic Location on the shores of lake kyoga gives a sense of booming business but beyond the eye. The challenges that people who live in this area face point to a direction of endless struggles that literary yield no dividends.
For instance at IYINGO landing site in Kagulu sub county, on arrival you see people going about there Businesses, Fishermen Preparing the fishnets Travelers waiting for boats to move to Teso land but what is evident is the dare state of the place. The increase of the water levels left the site in a terrible state The only available toilet facility is submerged in water and thus exposing the populace to water related diseases.
The Frolicking Children, laboring women & Idle men a cluster of young men in their early 20s who have abandoned education have resorted of finding ways of survival. The people seem robbed of their basic needs and often politicians use there innocence to promise heaven on earth yet deliver little but the hospitality of the people of Buyende is unrivaled
Whereas they go through thick and thin to earn a living, at least they have a grace to do it with a smile.
