why do u add the Na😭😭😭
@chioma3725
5 ай бұрын
Because Na will dissolve and seperate from the other ion (ex: NAF -> Na + F). Itll be a spectator ion and basically irrelevant for now. (When something with Na is put in water(aq), for example NaF again, you'll be left with Na ion and F ion, but in the video we only care about the F ion (Now by itself) because its the conjugate base we wanted to add. Basically, its an easy way to add our conjugate. I hope this makes sense! 😂

@AhmedhowGooner you can but that would be in the net ionic or overall equation - discrete ions dont exist so thats just how they add it and show that in the *balanced* equation

is it conjugated weak base or conjugated strong base ?? According to Bronsted-Lowry acid-base theory, the stronger of a pair of acids must form the weaker of a pair of conjugate bases. Therefore, the conjugate base of a strong acid is a weak base.( from google)

pH is dependent on the ratio [A-/HA] [HA]=[A-] , log (1)=1 pH=pKa pH=6.0 ----> pKa=6.0 Get closest pKa log(10)=1 [A-]=1M [HA]=0.1 pKa=4 pH=5 (1 unit higher from pKa) Whenever ratio between acid base (1-10 ratio) = 1 unit higher More of acid = 1 unit lower than pKa More of base = 1 unit higher More than base [A-] than acid [HA] [A-] > [HA] ---> (pH > pKa) [HA] > [A] ---> (pH < pKa) E.g) pKa=4 [A-]=0.01M [HA]=1M pKa=5 [A-]=0.1M [HA]=1M pKa=6 [A-]=1M [HA]=1M pKa=7 [A-]=1M [HA]=O.1M pKa=8 [A-]=1M [HA]=0.01M

I think whats especially confusing is the Ka value is supposed to describe the disassociation of the ions, which is supposed to dictate the concentration of reactants/products, so its weird to understand how the concentrations of Acid vs Conj base can be equal
@shafiurrahaman3396
Ай бұрын
I’m having trouble understanding this. When he says that the pKa is 6 therefore pH is 6 when log[A-/HA] = 0 i can understand the math, but can’t reconcile in my head how the acid and base don’t effectively just cancel to make the solution neutral 7. My counter thought is that perhaps the pH is actually 7 at the moment A- = HA but since the pKa = 6 it will eventually settle at pH = 6, but by that logic the pH will always = 6 if you give the reaction enough time so I think this is a flawed idea where I’m just describing pKa. I would appreciate to hear an explanation of what I’m missing here
