The Mantis costume was borrowed from another show called Babylon 5. They had to return the costume in pristine condition, which is why they did the fight scene in shadow puppet form.

Which is funny, because I don't really think that N'Grath appeared on B5 past the first season, and B5 was halfway into it's 4th season by the time Buffy premiered. Another way in which B5 influenced Buffy was having longer-term storytelling, although Buffy stuck to seasonal arcs, as opposed to Babylon 5's singular overall storyline.

There's a lot of MOTW episodes early on, but it does find an ongoing story for every season. Having 22 episodes also means there's more room for those single episode monsters.

Regarding female mantises chowing down on the males after mating - it is partly a myth, partly not. The initial studies on mantises were all of mantises in captivity. The female mantis usually only eats its mate when food is scarce or uncertain; in the labs, food was only provided at intervals, the mantis had no sense of time so mostly had no food immediately available and therefore was in "eat anything available" mode all the time, thus in the lab female mantises would mate and then eat. In the wild, while it will occasionally happen, most of the time the male escapes to mate again another day.

Just watch the Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992) movie for her first year. The first season is mostly Monster of the Week as it was a mid-season replacement series. They didn't know if they would be renewed. They wanted to establish that vampires weren't the only monsters. Season by season the monster of the week continues but to a lesser degree while various storylines develop. Has it been so long since high school? Xander is a typical very horny high school boy. Buffy and the Slayerettes? How about Buffy and the Scooby Gang.

Yeah, Season 1 is mostly monster-of-the-week. Season 2 is about half storyline episodes and half monster-of-the-week. Seasons 3 and 5 (my favorites) are mostly storyline driven. And yes, the dialog is nice. The relationships between the characters and their personal growth throughout the series is really what makes this show great.

A case of truth being stranger than fiction, some people have the ability to turn their head almost around. Some circus performers were quite famous and had a name in cabaret circuits, like The Human Owl, Martin Laurello. The noises crickets, beetles and mantis-like insects make can be jarring to people - the early computer whee-whoo sound may have been emulated by a beetle, it was unnerving, for sure. Also, they say that older ppl sts comment how there used to be so many crickets earlier but not anymore - you stop hearing that sound first when aging.

This is widely regarded as one of the worst episodes of season 1. It is certainly Xander at his most stereotypical teenage boy. Season 1 is mostly monster of the week (although the Master is always in the background) later seasons have more of a mix of arc and standalone episodes. 2:40 Yes, it's bees that dance, in figure-of-8 patterns that communicate the direction and distance of a nectar source. Are they going to explain what happened? You should read comic book BtVS: The Origin. Otherwise you could watch the film starring Kristy Swanson, it's not exactly the same but it is pretty close apart from her age. 8:36 Yes female praying mantises often do rip the heads off their mates, but usually before mating (the male bodies are set up to do the sex movement without the need for a brain). There is an obvious parallel with teenage boys not using their brain to have sex. 9:35 Willow calls them 'the Slayerettes' in the previous 'The Witch' episode. Later they are often called the Scooby gang, in referect to Scooby-Doo. Of course, even later SMG played Daphne in he Scooby-Doo film.

To be fair, boys weren't warned about sexual predators the way we girls were back in the 90s. Also. The utter hypocrisy of Buffy and Willow is disappointing. Like Xander is foolish for having a crush on a teacher...but its totally okay for Buffy to be crushing on a older guy (Angel). And in the first episode Willow told Buffy that she can usually make few vowel sounds when talking to a guy she likes, but then she has to go away. When Xander actually made random vowel sounds and forgot where the classroom was, Buffy and Willow thought it was hilarious. Ugh. The episode did touch on a serious subject to help raise awareness that boys and men can be victims of rape and sexual assault too, even if their attacker is a woman. I can appreciate that. Its something that still isn't talked about enough. There are many monster of the week type episodes, but they're all fun. Many people say the first season is bad compared to the rest of the show, but I adore season one. It reminds me of Big Wolf on Campus, a very campy and fun show, just about every episode is a parody in some way. XD

The one im still salty about is failing my intro to computers class i didnt need it to graduate just had a couple extra classes to fill my day senior year but i was like one of the first computer literate people on my block that teacher just didn't help because she didn't like repeating things if you didn't get it the first time which makes you a bad teacher imo lol

Haven't watched yet so I don't know what the initial question was. But similar story here I'm salty about. A business applications class, I was very computer literate and they had a photoshop assignment. "Make a picture that uses such-and-such features." I came up with an idea that made effective use of all of them and did it over like 2 days since I'm very computer literate, then spent the rest of the allotted week playing games or whatever. I got a C because I "didn't work on it long enough" despite it meeting every metric on the rubric. Screw that teacher lol.

Hahaha. My beef is that this specific teacher had told our class maybe a few months prior that if a teacher gives you an X (failing numeric grade), that means that they had the option to pass you but chose to give you a fail. According to her, they weren't to give grades that fell within a couple of points of the passing grade on either side, and so you either had to be bumped up to Y or down to X, and it was at the teacher's discretion. I don't know how true this is, mind you, but it's what she told us. Over that spring break my 18 y/o brother died very suddenly and tragically and so I ended up missing a couple weeks of school, and only went back because I was afraid of falling further behind. I admit I wasn't the best at science that year, but I put in a lot of effort when I returned to pass the class, more than any other class by a mile, and as far as I can remember, I wasn't failing before that. Despite that, she gave me an X on the final report card, aka the grade that, ACCORDING TO HER, was only given if a teacher chose to fail you. So again, I don't know how true that is, but it felt like a slap in the face considering my circumstances. Even outside of failing me, she was by far my most uncaring teacher in the aftermath of my brother's death, and so failing me was just the cherry on top of a shit year. Happy to say though that when I retook science the next year, I got an A 😁

This was one of the weaker eps of the first season. Not really awful, just sort of all around meh. You're right about the early strength of the show lying in its dialogue. The back story of Buffy burning down the gym is never really gone into. It was in the script of the non-canonical movie, but it got cut out and changed. That, among several other factors led to Whedon quitting the production. I saw the movie during its theatrical run and was not impressed, to say the least. When they announced a TV show a few years later I had ZERO interest in it. It was only because the show came on after reruns of "Friends" and played in the background while I was cooking dinner that I was slowly drawn in.

S1 as is always mentioned is weak due to its low budget, but it gets us to really know and love the characters, and 'the monster of the week' type format is evident throughout most of it. However, again it does provide an analysis of social comment, this time how the experienced and mature adults can take advantage of the innocent and weak younger people. This time in the form of a mature female teacher who is being drooled over by all the teenage boys, and is using them for evil purposes.

Dude, Buffy is a novel. It has chapters with each chapter achieving a degree of closure, as chapters in classic novels do, and a degree of stuff laid down that will have an impact on what is to come, as classical novels do. I know most don’t grasp how classical narrative such as that Tolstoy, or Bulgakov or Atwood works particularly these days anymore than they grasp how satire, parody, dark comedy, and metaphor work for whatever reason but…Speaking of metaphor, the monsters in Buffy, are, to paraphrase an American comic called “Pogo” from an earlier era, “us”. The “monsters” represent aspects of life and particularly, at this point in BtVS, aspects of high school life as is clear if one pays attention and analyses. By the way, you have already noted one cross episode continuity beyond the thematic metaphors that run across the series, namely,: the Buffy, Willow, Xander, Angel relationship. I suppose I also need to mention something else you hinted at, the development of character across episodes. Again, I realise. the difficulties most have in grasping thematic metaphors but character development? As to questioning “reality”, who would want to question thing in this best of all I am because I consume ain’t it heaven worlds?

24:20 Yes, there is something wrong with it, especially if you're not happy with it. You're acting as if Xander hasn't had any experiences with women by choice. That's not true, and it's unhealthy. Nothing to do with high school. It doesn't SEEM important. It IS important, whether in high school or outside of it, unless you're asexual or just genuinely don't care. To deny its importance is to deny a powerful biological instinct that leads to suffering if it's unfulfilled. You are implying that a person is immature if they don't think and act like an indifferent asexual. That's just wrong and hurtful.

I'm sorry, what? I'm responding to the fact that Xander is clearly embarrassed to be a virgin, and I don't think being a virginal 15/16 year old boy is shameful, even though it might feel that way in high school. How is that in any way implying that a person is immature if they want to have sex?
@davidmeadows5627
3 ай бұрын
@@shadowcatreacts Xander is right to be embarrassed and feel the way he feels. He's clearly suffering because he cannot satisfy some very powerful instincts. By telling him that it's okay, you are implicitly dissuading him from his goal and trivializing his sexual identity in the form of telling him not to worry about it. He SHOULD worry about it and take steps to change it, or he will never be as happy as he wants to be. Your attempt at trivializing his goals/pain makes nonsense out of the difference between heterosexuality and asexuality, at least in the practical sense (the distinction should instead be preserved).

Let me break it down for you, Daniel. Your viewpoint on sex comes from a place of power. You view people who have sexual urges and do not meet them as an "embarrassment", as you so put it. It's a biological instinct for most people, yes. However, meeting those needs isn't something that should be pressured into anybody's head, let alone impressionable youth still trying to figure them out. You say that "an opinion is just an opinion" but that's simply not true, not when that opinion holds power. And whether you admit it or not, you have influence over those whose lives you touch with your words. Whether just a passing thought or creating a direct path, your words (unfortunately for those around you) mean something. You're absolutely correct--I am attacking your character. Is it something I'll apologize for? No. I see no need to. You directly attacked somebody else for their own opinion, something you took incredibly out of context and turned into this incel mumbo jumbo. But when somebody directly establishes that your opinion is harmful (or in *my* own opinion--absolute shit), then you victimize yourself, trying to regain that sense of power you incorrectly feel like you are owed by everybody you open your mouth to. You have a chip on your shoulder because somebody taught you that sex equals power and without fulfilling those urges, you become a failure. And I'm sincerely sorry that was hammered into your head because that is not a healthy way to live. But you spreading that, smearing it into the lives of others, is not something that I feel comfortable sitting back and shutting my mouth up about. Rest easy though, Duncan. This conversation won't even remotely stick with you because I am not the years of therapy that you seem to need in order to gain a healthier semblance of a mindset surrounding sex. No, you won't search that out. Instead, you will continue to post your harmful words out into the void in hopes that somebody will make you feel that sliver of power you so desperately need in order to feel something in an otherwise mediocre existence
