And the reality is that when he was laying out the season arc, they didn’t know if there would be a third season. I agree that Xander's lie was mostly out of hatred for Angelus/Angel, mostly over what he did to Jenny, but also he never did like Angel. I disagree, though, that if he'd told the truth that it would have changed the outcome for Angel... there's nothing that Buffy could have done differently to lead to a different outcome. Angelus would still have pulled the sword from the demon and Buffy would still have had to send Angel to hell to save the world. The real consequence of Xander's lie was that it further isolated Buffy. When she was standing there, traumatized after killing Angel (who didn't even understand why she did it) -- Giles couldn't conceivably have forgiven Angel for Jenny, she knew Xander always hated Angel, and hearing that Willow also hated Angel would definitely leave Buffy feeling like there was nobody who would understand what she was feeling. She must have felt that if she'd seen them again, they would all be saying (or at least thinking), "YES! Hah! The monster is finally gone... took you long enough!" And that would have crushed her.
@stephaniebarker472
Жыл бұрын
But since Buffy sees that Angel’s soul is restored then she must have realized that Willow did try the spell again. So clearly Willow doesn’t hate Angel (Angelus, sure, but not Angel). Xander doesn’t just hate Angel/Angelus, he hates all vampires, ever since his friend Jesse was killed in the pilot. All that said, I do not agree with Xander’s choice. It wasn’t his call to make. And definitely when he told her and up until the point Buffy sees Angel’s soul is restored, Buffy must have believed that her two closest friends are rooting for Angel’s death.

Eventually I watched them both, and yes, GOT was great up to certain point, and then it steadily declined, but Breaking Bad truly has earned it's reputation as being the best series of all times. At least according to a lot of people. It gets better and better and manages to have masterpiece last season and finale. It's much deeper than it appears and allows many rewatching sessions to analyze the characters and arcs. Everybody should watch it. It only has 7 episodes in the first season and if you are not interested by the end of second season, then feel free to stop watching. Even though it gets better all the way up till the end. I always feel the need to come to Xanders defence in this episode. I don't think he was motivated by jealousy when he gave Buffy the fake message from Willow. I think he just realised everything that was at stake and didn't want Buffy to be distracted. Last time willow tried the curse and Buffy faced Angel, she wasn't fighting at her best. She was trying to keep him busy whilst Willow did the spell and was holding out hope that it would work, so she wasn't trying to kill him. It would have been the same here. Angel would still be fighting to kill, but Buffy would be trying not to hurt him because she would be waiting for him to become Angel again. She probably would have been killed. Not to mention the world would then be 'sucked into hell'. Considering all of that, I think he actually did the right thing, and maybe even the more mature thing!

Pretty much this, yeah. It's not a black-and-white situation, sure, but Xander wasn't exactly wrong, and this show doesn't pull stuff like "love saves all no matter what, no consequences". Buffy would have probably died here without his lie, without firmly putting herself first and love second.

While whedon had a multiseason plan, he planned every finale to work as possible series finale because they never knew if it will get renewed. I get why Joyce is angry and lashed out tbh. Buffy has had this dangerous deadly secret for years and just nonchalantly dropped it on her. Its not something you just get over or accept within few minutes. And Buffy physically pushing her mother caused her to say something I'm sure she did not really mean considering instant regret right after. Buffy just can't catch a break though, it's psychological trauma after trauma. As much as others idolise her for being a superhero, they can't quite know the weight she has to carry.

That's pretty much it, she carries all this agony on her shoulders. Last season was her death, this season, she has had a lot to contend with but losing Angel was the breaking point. Love the ribcage as a hat joke. Xander was bad enough in the last episode when he yelled at Giles about Jenny, "Yeah, well she's dead," but when he says, "Willow said kick his ass" he is affecting Buffy's front line of battle, being a reason Angel went to Hell (and therefore a reason Buffy ran away), and blaming Willow." In that one phrase Xander went from an annoyance of sometimes unlikable to my least favorite character, which he never recovers from. Sorry Xander. Don't know if I really consider Buffy leaving town a cliffhanger or a wrap-up, but never really thought of this episode as potential series finale material. Perhaps it is because I always saw so many what is gonna happen next moments to continue.
@hawkflame9584
5 жыл бұрын
I actually disagree about the "Kick his ass" line. If anything, if he told her the truth, I think *that* would have gotten in her head and affected her on the front line. Her focus on killing Angelus needs to be clear, and the possibility of Angel being brought back is a complication she didn't need to deal with. With that information you introduce the possibility of her stalling, or subconsciously holding back, and with the fate of the world at stake that's not what she needed. I doubt she would have fought with the same ferocity if she knew a cure was a possibility. And her knowing the truth would have stopped Angelus from pulling out the sword? Because once that happens, there are only two outcomes: either Angel/Angelus dies, or the world ends. I fail to see how it would have turned out any better if he told her the truth; if anything it would have made her job harder.
@Buffy8Fan
5 жыл бұрын
@@hawkflame9584 SMALL S7 SPOILER Of course it would make her job harder, the job isn't easy, but she proves she could have handled it when she sends Angel to Hell. Plus if people with this argument are saying that in the middle of battle both Buffy and a newly recovered from Angelus turned Angel would quit fighting to wrap their arms around each other in an embrace of passion, I find that amusing. Also, it wasn't Xander's decision to make. Willow gave him instructions as she had made up her mind to try the reensoul spell again (resolve face Xander knew what it meant), so Angelus was going to change back to Angel at some point in an immediate future no matter what. According to your argument that could have distracted her just as easily if the battle was still happening (and therefore it seems the best outcome would have been to tell her what Willow was doing. All Xander did was narrow Buffy's options as she heads into battle then blame Willow for whatever bad outcome was going to happen. I wrote a comment on Liam Catterson's _Becoming Part 1_ reaction. It mapped the progress from _Innocence_ to _Becoming Part 2_ on why Buffy was not only doing something in terms of getting ready to fight Angelus over the nine episode Angelus arc (the comment I was answering assumed she sat around doing nothing during those episodes), but why when she does do so in this episode she would wait until after the fight is all over before letting it "affect" her (btw that is what happens). Loosely this is what I said: Killing Angel and her progress from saying, "give me time" in _Innocence_ to not allowing other situations to become problems by just focusing on Angelus like in _Phases, I Only Have Eyes For You,_ and _Go Fish_ to studying him in _Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered_ to making sure she and Giles escape his blind revenge in _Passion_ to being overly eager to face him while sick in _Killed by Death_ to actually being ready for him in the _Becoming_ episodes. If Xander didn't trust Buffy and in turn made sure to blame Willow if Buffy ever found out (PS in _Selfless,_ Buffy does get upset at Willow for the "kick his ass" line - so Xander has a lot to answer for concerning that line, things the show never addresses) then he should at least admit his real problems are still jealousy and don't have anything to do with Angelus. As was proven when he treated Angel like he did Angelus and said, "let's not forget that I hated Angel long before you guys jumped on the bandwagon." Thus stating that he is proud of being jealous of Angel before anyone in the group had personal reasons to hate Angelus. There is much behind that phrase having nothing to do with Buffy or her feelings about Angel. It has more to do with what Xander wants for himself with Buffy and what he wants done with Angel.
