For most seasons there are 1 or more truly different and extraordinary episodes and this is one of them in my opinion. Some are just very different then the normal episodes, some are prophetic, some are horrifying, some are disturbing, some are thought-provoking, and some are just hilarious. Notice how often new vampires suddenly know martial arts or kick boxing?

I always roll my eyes at everything Xander and Willow say in that opening scene. I love that Oz states to Willow the whole point of everything from what Willow's feeling to the fact that it's not his problem. Joe hit a nail on the head perfectly when saying Oz did it all without being angry or mean, which is why its such a deep cut on Willow. It's a great moment. Xander on the other hand, saying he doesn't think they did anything wrong... even if he's just posturing (he is, as shown by the phone calls he leaves Cordelia), it doesn't make him look good AKA it wasn't the right attitude to take, where as even if it's not Willow's problem, she comes across remorseful. It's nice that Buffy wants to see how Cordelia is, but in order for it to be as effective as Buffy wanted, she and Buffy would've had to be friends before Xander and Willow cheated. It definitely doesn't help Cordelia that the next day, she sees Buffy hanging out with those that screwed over Cordelia. Its just another slap to her face, sadly. The actor who played The Master, Mark Metcalf, said at a Comic Con panel that he was disappointed his character died at the end of S1, as he was told only that he would kill Buffy ahead of reading the script. He loved returning to see what would have happened if The Master won, and to kill Buffy again. I laughed hard at Mikey's continued assumption/joke of Anyanka being a genie and trying to place Disney genie rules on her. Buffy is considered stronger than any other slayer before her because she doesn't fight alone AKA she has family and friends. In The Wishverse she has nothing but her Watcher. Based on the phone call Giles gives him, she's keeping a distance from said Watcher, as well. Its the reason she dies in this universe and why there'll be no resurection, like in _Prophecy Girl._ Even in The Wishverse, the prophecy was still fulfilled. But without "family and friends," as Spike complained in his first episode, Buffy will not have a second chance. Athough, unlike in _Prophecy Girl,_ The Master did a better job at killing Buffy in The Wishverse - snapping her neck over drowning. Things diverged at _The Harvest_ when Buffy wasn't there, which means the prophecy of The Anointed One didn't happen, but since it is prophecy, it will still happen... or probably already was fulfilled. That's a better guess. Buffy not being there at all meant she did "not know him" (as the prophecy foretold), and without a slayer The Master considered The Anointed One not needed, and killed him before the episode. On the surface it looks like a filler episode, but as long as the reason Cordelia made the wsh was connected with her issues of being cheated on, it isn't true filler. Cordelia was a main character in S1, also. So her being in the main credits isn't really a spoiler. She wasn't in the group but on the main credits, and she wasn't in the group and on the main credits. She's done both, so... now what?

One of my favourite episodes and a great 'what if'. I really love that there is no recognition from Buffy for Willow and Xander - as you say, no connection when she dusts Xander - it really underscores how much she needs her friends in our normal 'verse. I'm slightly annoyed that Oz has a tendency to dictate the terms of the relationship (telling Willow that she only wants to kiss him in "Innocence" to make Xander jealous, lying to Willow all summer long about not going to summer school), but that's a longer-term issue. Can't argue his point here: as useful as it is to talk things out, you can't talk until both parties are ready to talk. Pleading isn't a discussion.

The Wish is always a fan favourite. A great concept here with the alternative reality. We get introduced to Anya The Vengeance Demon, the moral of the episode is be careful what you wish for. Cordelia being Cordelia opens up the alternative dimension, some great comedy one liners here too, and of course foreshadowing again for the future. Cordelia's vacuous airhead friends are so cruel to her and others. Giles saves the day confronting Anya and restores things back to normal. Again we see S3 being so innovative with much better writing and storylines. It just gets better and better. I told you guys it's a 'bangerfest' from here on in to the S3 finale.

Love this episode. Love that it took its time before the wish happens. It needed the time to breathe and really feel the "what if" change to get the full impact. Mostly for Willow to show that she knows it was wrong and does not want Xander anymore. Love the body count of the gang too. The wish ended before Oz would have gotten toasted. In the old opening monolog it says, "In every generation there is a chosen one. She alone will stand against the vampires the demons and . . ." As other have said, what makes Buffy so special it that she is not alone. Xander brought her back from the dead. Willow almost brought Angel back in time to help at the end of Season 2. Hell, Spike helped her out too by taking Dru out of the fight. Giles is even special among the Watchers. Most watchers are not that attached to their Slayers or even potentials as they die so frequently. He actually cares deeply for Buffy in a paternal way.

I do know two, possibly three, people who positively HATE this episode. They agree that it feels like a fill-in, that nobody learns anything, and one says it means nothing to watch our characters die, because they're not really out characters. But then, I've been in Buffy fandom long enough to know a lot of people. And sometimes some of them are just plain wrong. (I also know a lot of people who love the episode, including one who says it's her favorite of the entire series.) This is more evidence for my "Odd-numbered episodes good, even-numbered eps bad" trend of late. Like "Bad Eggs", this is ostensibly Marti Noxon on the script and David Greenwalt directing, but like that one, David clearly did some rewriting, because this is great sci-fi and Marti doesn't really do that so much. Liked how you caught the Spike and Drusilla analogy with Vampires Xander and Willow. I think Vamp Xander is a better Spike than Spike; he's so casually brutal ("I just love to see you go") without being a whiny drama queen. (To be fair, Angel is clearly not boning Vamp Willow in this world. It's not Cordelia whose love life Buffy impacted.) Anyanka didn't just randomly appeared because Cordy got dumped; her burning Xander's photos in the bowl is close enough to the ritual that Giles uses to summon Anyanka in Act IV. The difference is that because Giles said the incantation, Anyanka appears instantly, where as "Anya" had to sniff out that Cordy was her prey. The Anointed isn't here because the Master rose at the Harvest, so there was no need for a plan B. Angel probably killed Darla then, as in the main timeline, before getting captured. Spike may simply have decided to steer clear of the Master, who was a big noise, whereas he figured he could swoop in and use the Hellmouth cure Dru when there were only disorganized randoms left around. Cordelia getting dual-sucked by Xander and Willow is not only strangely erotic, but emblematic of her main-timeline issues. There, she feels like dying because of Xander and Willow's passion for each other, but in Anyanka's world, she is literally killed by them as a couple. (BTW, Xander's complaining that Oz and Cordy didn't knock when they came upon Xillow's "impending death exception" smoochies last episode may have been a bit too much, but I do wonder why they didn't call out. If I'm in a strange place and I'm looking for Xander because I'm worried, I'm going to call his name rather than creep about silently. So this really is all Cordelia's own fault, lol.) The girl in the blood machine was played by Nicole Bilderback, who, like Danny Strong (Jonathan) and Mercedes McNab (Harmony) goes all the way back to the presentation reel Joss made to pitch networks on the series. (Some call it the "unaired pilot", but it was never meant for broadcast, whereas actual pilot episodes air.) Yes, the Master is now 2-for-2 in the "killing Buffy" sweepstakes. That Inevitable Prophesied Death thing really is inevitable. I love Sarah Michelle Gellar's acting when The Master snaps Buffy's neck: Buffy has like a half-second realization of "Oh, shit, I'm dead" and then the life drains right out of her eyes. Just brilliant. As is that whole "Slayer's Elegy" slo-motion sequence. Xander finally gets to fulfill what he told Angel in "Killed by Death" ("You're going to die. And I'm going to be there".), Buffy walks right through Angel's ashes to take on Xander, and then Buffy kills Xander and walks away, not even bothering to watch him dust. A complete reversal from how she told him in the teaser that he (and Willow) helped her go on. Completely chilling. (Oz killing Willow is less of an issue for me, since that's nothing more than a romance. Buffy is our story.) But the important thing is this: NO, MIKEY, DON'T PUT THIS IN THE BOOK. Giles gets knocked over by the van door (honestly, Giles!) and slammed against the apartment wall by Anyanka, but he never loses consciousness in the episode. Close doesn't count, lol. PS: A very minor quibble: Harmony attempting to shame Cordelia by suggesting that Cordy date Jonathan is somewhat silly when you consider that Cordelia already HAS dated Jonathan, in public. (At the end of "Reptile Boy". "Young men are the way to go", and all that.) But then, it's pretty damn well established that Harmony isn't very bright. ("No, 'C' for Wilma,Little Brain!") So no harm, no foul. Not my Top 10 for the series, but Top 25, definitely. See you Tuesday.

Spike said that a choas demon was, "all slime and antlers." This had no antlers. Put an asterisk on Giles getting knocked out as it was in an alternate universe and isn't part of his actual cumulative total. I wrote a fanfic that touches on Werewolves v vampires. They wouldn't fight. A vampire isn't alive, so the werewolf has no interest in killing it. But he does make mistakes. For example when he first discovers he's a werewolf, he doesn't tell anyone, he tries to deal with it on his own. That's a mistake, though it's a reasonable choice for who he is - he's apparently been responsible for his own life for a while, we don't see any parents as he apparently lives alone in what was probably their house, and he's going to chain himself up there? He should have trusted Giles and the Scoobies to help, but he's very self-contained and private... He also repeated his senior year despite being smart, because he didn't go to summer school to finish his incompletes. The incompletes themselves were a mistake of sorts - he'd have been better off doing the work needed to graduate normally, but he had other priorities. That's not perfect, it just isn't as obvious a flaw as those some other characters have.

I always die at the boy asking Cordelia to go to brunch. What do these people have against moving? I love The Wish but I do have some issues with it: I wish it had been a truly Cordelia-centric episode. She’s in her own universe for all of 2 seconds before she’s killed and everything’s passed off to Giles. I wish they would’ve used this as an opportunity for her to learn that she didn’t just fight demons because she was dating Xander; she actually wanted to make things better and protect people. And maybe seeing Xander and Willow as these horrible vampires and having to slay them, would’ve made her realize that even though they hurt her and broke her trust, she still cared deeply for those 2. She doesn’t have to forgive them, but at least she can tell them how much they hurt her and work to be friends again. I also would’ve liked if seeing how Buffy’s absence impacted the town would’ve made her realize that just because she wasn’t talking to Willow and Xander, didn’t mean she couldn’t stay close with Buffy. I think Buffy was trying to tell her this outside of The Bronze but Cordy wasn’t really open to hearing it. Another option would’ve been using this episode as an opportunity for Cordelia to get to know Faith. Buffy going to Cleveland as opposed to Sunnydale doesn’t make a lot of sense. Buffy still coming to Sunnydale and for some reason, not making friends could’ve resulted in her death at the hands of the Master, and in turn, the subsequent series of events we see in this episode. Faith could be called to Sunnydale and Cordelia could help her prepare to fight The Master whilst also getting to know her. On their return to the real world, Cordelia could’ve sought out an actual friendship with Faith, and be the friend I think she is in desperate need of. Because while Faith’s friends with Buffy, and I don’t think Buffy would ever choose between her friends, one can’t help but think Buffy will always put Willow and Xander first. I think both Cordelia and Faith are in really big need of a best friend whose strongest attachment is to them. I think this does show us that Buffy’s mental state was probably horrible before she met Giles. Xander, and Willow and would’ve only gotten worse without them. The Master had to hypnotize the original Buffy to kill her - which he was only able to do because of her fear. G.I. Jane Buffy’s fight with The Master always seemed like an assisted suicide to me. She just gave up.
