This episode is also really great commentary on the all-too-still-present book banning that's gone on through history. I love how the show makes deep social commentary through fun plots and silly jokes. It's one of the reasons the show still resonates after all these years. It's kindof timeless in its messaging.

Another part of the lexicon that Buffy coined - "big bad" was first uttered in this episode the way it's currently used, to describe one of the big bosses (ie The Master, Spike/Dru/Angelus, The Mayor), as opposed to a monster of the week. It's still used today when discussing seasonal antagonists on shows. Even though Angel had been referred to as the "big, bad thing in the dark" previously, this was the first time the phrase was used as a noun itself.

Remember, this episode was in the late '90s, during the height of the Satanic Panic that was going around. Three teenage boys were subjected to a BS murder trial and were all deemed guilty of murdering some little kids in the forest for a Satanic ritual. Years later, after a lot of work, it comes out that the teens were just used as scapegoats because they were outcasts and one of the boys was mentally challenged and was easy for the police to manipulate him into confessing to things he never did. They lost over a decade of their lives in prison, and one kid was nearly executed because the authorities tried to use them to "ease the fears" of the local population. Eventually, they were all freed. There's also in 1999-2000, when members of Congress were flailing about in pure panic because Wiccan soldiers were arguing for the same religious rights that the Big Three (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) were getting when it comes to accommodations for worship. Of course, the Republican members of Congress lost their minds. An a-hole from Georgia (because of course it was) named Bob Barr screamed on the floor, "What's next? Will armored divisions be forced to travel with sacrificial animals for Satanic rituals? Will Rastafarians demand the inclusion of ritualistic marijuana cigarettes in their rations?" All Fort Hood Open Circle, the Wiccan group at the center of the mess, wanted was a place for their worship because the group had become too big to hide in their living room anymore. They were still not free, even when they were allowed the religious freedoms that other people receive. The powers that be had let them have their space in the woods to worship, but a group of hateful Christians broke into their area, smashed the altar with sledgehammers (it was made of limestone) and then painted blue crossed on the pieces. As far as I know, nothing happened to the perpetrators of that hate crime. Why? Because we're not humans to these people. But anyway yeah, this episode was taking a look at all that was going on at the time.

Was this around the same time that Wiccans were trying to get the right to have the Pentacle on the headstones of Wiccan soldiers, too? I remember something about that but not the timing. There was such a big stink over that! EDIT: Well, I should have just Googled first. But I found that this part of the story happened in 2006/2007. Dept of Veteran Affairs had been "contemplating" requests about using the symbol for the gravestones of fallen soldiers and vets for 9 years without deciding. The following Wikipedia talks about it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Stewart_burial_controversy.

Gingerbread was an interesting episode on many levels. The main message here is showing how 'mob rule' can easily be influenced by misinformation and even turn on their own friends and family. The burning of the books also an obvious reference to The Nazis who did the same in the 1930s. The overt references to Hansel and Gretel regarding the children very interesting too. Again when get some comic relief with Oz and Xander falling through the roof at the end in their rescue attempt. A very decent S3 stand alone episode again.

Gingerbread's a pretty scary episode. It's also kind of realistic in the sense that whenever there's a tragedy(like a school shooting)we look for someone or something to blame often a marginalized group that doesn't fit the norm. The book burnings at city hall in the episode are frighteningly realistic especially with the book bannings in red states in the United States right now.

"The boy of witch" is witch. Warlock is from old Scots-Gaelic and means "traitor." The writers of the television series "Bewitched" misappropriated the term in the 1960s, and Hollywood writers have never bothered to learn better in the past half-century.

I'm trying to think of a self-contained episode that does not add to the overall story in some way but almost all of them add something be it a new character who sticks or some plot that's used in another episode even the episode with the invisible girl set up the Codex which gave us "Giles I'm 16 I don't want to die" the next episode. Inca Mummy Girl maybe though it added to Xander lore that he falls for demons and the supernatural, maybe Go Fish?

Fun reaction.A few thoughts for you about one off episodes, there are more aspects to the chapter than at first glance. For instance… Willow is more involved with magic than we were expecting or had been indicated that she is becoming proficient. Not only is she comfortable with an accomplished Witch. they have a minion. Willows mother is not emotionally bonded with Willow and has no desire to be involved with Willow. It’s establishing Willow has only the supernatural world to feel a part of a family. Before the Hansel and Gretel demon took over, we see why it was right for keep Joyce away from her Slayer world and she has no understanding of how to support Buffy. And that’s one of the points . The alleged adults react emotionally and are controlled by forces wanting power. The r mayor aligns with the rush to judgement , like any politician, to be popular. The demon is a metaphor for how to get normal decent people to be evil. It’s how the powerful get their people to go to war , gladly pay more in taxes, and to give up freedoms. Only Buffy, still developing, has moral clarity stops to question. It takes her awhile but she does question. We see again how Buffy has many more ways of grasping what is right than Joyce. Joyce may love Buffy but she is a poor moral leader and fails often in teaching right choices with Buffy. Finally, parts of one offs do come back. For instance the looks between Joyce and Giles harkens back to Band Candy.

This is quite a political episode. There are some anti-right-wing undertones to it. It has people not really following trains of logic but rather falling in line to predisposed ideas. There's the persecution of certain classes driven by fear, taking of the law into their own hands, a high police presence and censorship too. This show does from time to time make its leanings known.

I struggle with the defense of Joyce in this one, if her character wasn't acting different enough to the characters to be noticed as acting under a spell, it says something about Joyce as a character. The way the writing had Xander and Oz fixing things between them was great. Xander's parnoia about Oz not talking to him is strange as Oz not on ly let everything go, but he doesn't say anything at all, unless he has smething to say. He chooses his words carefully, to the point that I'm surprised Xander is worried about all this. The team-up between Cordelia and Giles was the highlight of the episode. Cordelia's lines referencing Giles being knocked out was comedy gold. I feel like the episode itself acts like a fairy tale and doesn't just talk about them. I love how Buffy kills the Hansel and Gretel demon. I feel like Angel is back to what he was like in early S1, only better, in terms of helping Buffy rather than being inserted into her life because they are dating. It works in his character's favor, in my opinion.
