Amazing how much Wesley evolved as a character from this point. Here, he’s young, dangerously naive, arrogant in his intellect, pompous, clumsy, somewhat cowardly and follows the rules to the letter. By the end of Angel, he’s a capable fighter, a skilled warlock, a bit cynical and jaded about the world, yet brave, a brilliant strategist, and willing to sacrifice for the greater good. Ruthless yet compassionate, serious and focused. What a story to tell.

I love Wesley. I love Giles too, but if I were a Slayer, I'd prefer to have Wes as my Watcher. He gets right into the research that matters where Giles often gets distracted by stuff he (and no one else) finds interesting but does not actually help the mission. That's important for the show's amazing humour of course; but practically speaking Wesley gets the research done more efficiently, and I like knowing precisely what I need to do when I'm supposed to solve a problem. Unlike Buffy and Faith, I don't have a problem taking orders. Especially not when Wes gives them so innocently; it doesn't remotely occur to him Buffy won't want to do her part of the job. It wouldn't occur to me either.

Honestly, I think the entirety of the differences between the two watchers in this scene is purely experience. Compare Wesley to Giles in Welcome to the Hellmouth and they're significantly more similar. And then compare Angel S3 Wesley to Giles in this episode. Still distinct, sure, but not as vastly as one might think based on this scene.

It's weird. The first time I watched season 3 and Wesley entered: I was pretty much completely on the Scooby Gang's side. Wes was the interloper getting in their way. But after getting to know him more Angel, I'm more on his side. The gang never really gave him a chance. Yes he was naive and arrogant, but he was also knowledgeable and earnest. Plus he was put in the unenviable position of coming in after the evil female Watcher ripped through the gang. The guy never really had a chance. And even when he got fired he still came back and was willing to fight with them, despite what they thought of him. That's pretty much Wes throughout his entire arc on Angel.

@@djsosonut I mean, they were justified in abandoning him. He didn’t tell anyone about that fake prophecy that he found about Connor. And he should have. But he kept it to himself instead of confiding in the friends that he had fought alongside for years. From their POV, if he didn’t trust them, why should they trust him? And they probably couldn’t trust him, as he would very likely do it again if he felt he had to. So they decided, “You’re out. There’s the door, goodbye.” There wasn’t anything Wesley could have said to justify what he did. It came down to not trusting his family, and when trust is broken, it cannot be fixed.

What I find interesting is that both Wesley and Giles ended up having a lot in common. They were both fired from the Council and they both saw through the disgusting politics behind them. We already knew that Giles hated them because of that, but Wesley eventually figured it out for himself. I remember him saying in one of the earlier episodes of Angel that he did more good and fought more evil working with this vampire with a soul than he ever did working with the Council. I remember him telling that to the three Council men who were trying to hunt down Faith. The Council had such a black and white image of the world. There was absolutely no grey area with them whatsoever. "Demons and vampires could not possibly be humane at all". The Council was so full of elitist snobs who played politics and didn't bother to look at all of the facts of what was really going on in the world. They acted like they were the good guys, but they were more anti-hereos IMO. Wesley eventually realized that for himself and found himself never to trust them ever again.

Having watched every episode of both Buffy and Angel it's amazing to think what kind of a great story arc Wesley's going to have all the way from Buffy season 3 to the final season of Angel. Becoming from this soft and cowardly comedic relief person to a serious, tough, charismatic and highly skilled demon hunter. I think Wesley's story could possibly be the most fascinating out of all the Buffyverse characters. It makes so little sense though... watchers would train for decades hoping to become an actual watcher on duty, for Wesley to be chosen while being so young is very strange. And also - two Slayers... put in the same town, and before you explain it as a Hellmouth location, they clearly stated in the finale that it was only one Hellmouth out of thousands. Spread them out, give both a personal watcher, they'd be clearly happy about it. Or even better - try to medically stop their hearts and revive to make more Slayers, the way Faith was made. Buffy is such a child in this scene. Faith's attitude I get; she comes from a rough background, was just betrayed by her own Watcher, and is treated as the 'spare' Slayer by the Scoobies in sharing Giles with Buffy. No wonder she doesn't trust anyone new. Obviously Buffy loves Giles, but he will always be her father figure and stick around regardless. Why does she have such a problem with Wesley? He isn't any more bookish and 'boring' than Giles himself, and he's quite witty. 'I didn't get this job for my looks.' Giles has scolded Buffy into doing her duty as a Slayer multiple times; the cookie line is funny but total nonsense. Giles doesn't give Buffy a choice in doing her job either. Sure, Wesley could have given the instructions more respectfully, as a delegation rather than an order; but Buffy really is overreacting here on how 'bad' a Watcher she expects Wesley to be, unless it's all just her loyalty to Giles and she's taking her anger at the Council for firing him out on poor Wesley, who's not responsible for that and clearly doing his best here! Besides, he IS cute. (And Willow obviously agrees with me, since she married him in real life.)
@kuv3809

She's no child. Buffy doesn't trust the council or the watchers (except Giles) because Faith's watcher turned out to be evil and she doesn't want to go through that again. How little empathy you have for Buffy just because you find Weasley attractive. By the way, calling a full grown adult cute is cringey.
@jamesvach6698

@@kuv3809 There is also the fact that a few episodes ago, the council decided to test her abilities by setting a vampire loose so she could confront it without her powers and that ended up putting her mother in danger. The person from the council seemed less concerned with her wellbeing and the wellbeing of everyone put in danger by that little stunt and more concerned with how Buffy and Giles did on their respective "tests". The character clearly demonstrated that the council is only concerned with how Buffy functions as their weapon and very little if anything about either her wellbeing as a person or any collateral damage that might result from their decisions. That might factor into it as well.

Okay, there are legends among Buddhists about curses to turn people into animals... also the German fey. I found a legend about a demonic goose but I couldn't find out what the goose does that's demonic. In vampire culture, accretion of the spirits of predator animals in one's soul is considered to be a sign of power. The native Americans used to divide into groups of symbolic animal totems (like in Fight Club...they're supposed to go in their cave and find their power animal) lol. Like a type of personality. The symbol of the brown bear is used on the state flag of California (like at my home town in England) but reports of were bears are scanty. Other legends include shape-shifting witches who would keep pelts and skins to deceive people by appearing thus, disguised. In Philip Pullman's Northern Lights Daemons are representative of soul-manifestation and intrinsic. Servants get dog daemons, witches get bird daemons , cats are a symbol of curiosity etc.
