I don't think this is how Tang music sounded like. This is Japanese; not Tang dynasty. This may be inspired by court music of Tang dynasty, but it is not the same as what Tang version sounded like. This is Japanese; not Chinese.
Ok im just here because of the module...but the music is too good

I love this musical style. This is like bare bones Japanese music that your spirit understands. Grace, elegance, and strength exemplified.

@@tiloalo do u think this is exactly what tang dynasty music was.. No even it brought to japan via china doesn't mean it's in the completely original form of tang music.. It changes throughout whole history with japanese culture so u can't tell it's only performed by japanese and not japanese music..

The song "Prince Lanling Into the Battle" originated from the Battle of MangMount in 564 AD. The song was introduced to Japan in Tang Dynasty(618-907), and was gradually lost due to Dynasty change in China. It was not found in Japan until 1986. The father in this play (kzitem.info/news/bejne/qYKLtaSbs3uhgKQ) was the musician who followed the cultural messenger to teach pipa to Japan in Tang Dynasty, but he failed to return to his homeland due to an accident. The mother both missed and resented her husband, she thought it was Pipa that made his husband never come back, so she cut the strings to prevent her daughter from learning it, but eventually the daughter still mastered the song "Prince Lanling Into the Battle". The end in this play actually metaphorized that the Chinese classical song returned to China finally.

At that time, ancient Japan 倭 was still a regional power in China. These Chinese cultures were spread to the local Chinese, not the native Japanese .
I like how they omitted the part when the man coughing at 1:27 commits a ritual seppuku for disturbing the performance.

Forms a nice contrast, the timeless spooky / magic figure on the stage standing motionless... While a mere mortal hacks and wheezes, feebly.

@James Wang four cardinal directions, spanning the cosmos, king of elemental dragons. Channeling something fundamental, bringing equilibrium to your rule, for the sovereign is the axle of the celestial wheel. Godzilla's trying to get to the supermarket, duh.
I am Chinese and I travelled to more than 30 countries not Japan, only when I am good enough and I can understand more , I will go. I will be more like I am tracking back Tang Dynasty .
Very magical and mysterious. What is the meaning of the dance?

Tshiknn Are you into Gagaku and Ancient Chinese Music? Just some background on this song. This piece was composed to celebrate the victory of the Northern Qi general Gao Changgong (aka Lord of Lanling). This piece has been lost (but restored) in Mainland China, but is still part of the Gagaku repertoire.
