For clarity the Bugatti EB110 project also suffered from suppliers in the area being told by Lambo/Ferrari/Alfa if you supply them with bolts/parts we won't buy from you. Lamborghini originally had this squeeze from Ferrari but managed to keep contracts as he had the Tractor business with them. This is also why Pagani makes their own bolts, not because he likes to.

It's worth noting that Ettore Bugatti's pickiness with buyers was actually pretty isolated to the Type 41 Royale. They sold plenty of race cars and race-adjacent sports cars in big numbers all over Europe. The Royale was intended to be limited to 12 cars. 12 Engines were made, but only 6 cars were actually completed. Ettore being so particular about the buyers meant that only THREE of those actually found owners. Of the remaining cars, Ettore kept one for himself. The other two remained unsold into the war and the rumour is that they had to be buried and hidden throughout the occupation, because Bugatti were panicked at the prospect of the Royales being discovered, confiscated and being sent straight to German high command. In a round about way, Ettore was right to be cautious about the owners, one of them was almost Adolf Hitler.

So, I’m about to propose something pretty damn stupid, but here goes: What I’d like to see brands like Bugatti do is forget road certification and build magnificent, track-only toys for the obscenely wealthy. Re-create, even evolve some of their classic models for faux-vintage racing classes. And not just Bugatti. I mean, Jaguar and Aston Martin already know how to build new D-Types and DB5s. Imagine “reissues” of the 356 Speedster and 550, 250 GT SWB, Maserati Birdcages…

I think VW gave the Bugatti keys to RIMAC as a big FU to Koenigsegg. RIMAC got there big break making the hybrid power train for the Regera. Helped design and build it for Koenigsegg, and is the back bone of they're current lineup of cars. I believe Bugatti also approached RIMAC to help develop there own power train as well. In the end VW saw Koenigsegg was beating them both in performance and in car culture. Even some of the hyper elite around the world wanted a Koenigsegg as much if not more then a Bugatti. So VW took the opportunity to simply take RIMAC away from Koenigsegg. I get the feeling these new Bugatti models under RIMAC will look and feel a lot like Koenigseggs instead of older Bugatti's. FYI my family is from Croatia, so have been follow RIMAC since the start. So there is a lot of national pride I have for the company as well. I really hope they understand what makes Bugatti a Bugatti, and keeps to it. But them dropping the W16 for me isn't giving me confidence.
@HMHacki

I don't think Bugatti is in direct competition with Königsegg. Yes, they operate in the same segment, but Bugattis are much more refined and liveable cars. Königsegg is manufacturing true craziness, which certanly has massive appeal, but seem much more on the ragged edge in therms of both performance and expierience. Not that beautiful either, in my opinion. The Chiron is the final form of yesterday's tech fully realized and perfected. Meanwhile, in Sweden they develop a single speed torque converter hybrid showcar, and then actually build the thing, which is also really fucking awesome! My guess is: same segment, same clientele, but no competition because, at that level of wealth: why not both?

Well just ask Mercedes how they missed the boat with Maybach? I worked at the Knightsbridge Maybach and special orders of London. For people buying an S-Class every month in different colours there was not a big enough step above to justify the cost. It felt the same in tactility and sound is the key to things, like the fabric of your suit. That is why the CL/S/SL600 and G 65 sell is because they feel different. Going to the factory grounds in Molshine to order a car with a friend it's understandable why the guy is pissed as that took decades to develop.

Hearing the talk at the time that Rimac and Bugatti merged, it sounded like the Chiron's (Bolide etc) W16 was going to be the last W16 made by Bugatti and the future powertrain would be different. Most assumed hybrid or full electric, but Bugatti said it understood its heritage and would take that into account when designing the next Bugatti flagship model. A V8 hybrid might be underwhelming compared to what Rimac and Bugatti had done, but I would wait to see the insanity of Rimac's "next" generation electric tech and Bugatti's engineering abilities.

1. I don't know whether to be mad or impressed that you spent an hour talking about whether a V8 Bugatti is unique enough without referencing Ettore's motto of "If comparable, it is no longer Bugatti." And 2. The V8 rumor is bullshit. The source for that confirmed nothing of the sort, only that the Chiron successor would be a hybrid (we already knew the W16 was finished as of Mistral). Reports citing the original Autocar article went down a weird rabbithole of guesswork to get to the V8 claim. It's bullshit. My 2c, Bugatti will build a W12 or a V10, as those are the 2 most unique 'proven' engine configurations, and with Lambo/Audi and Bentley ditching them, they will no longer be considered shared with other VW Group products. I'm leaning towards hybrid W12 as the solution over V10 considering the GT-like nature of Bugatti.

I wish they did a hybrid system like the 918 using a naturally aspirated version of the W16. I doubt they could make enough power with that motor N/A though, it's still essentially a vr6 head with the same inherent flow problems. You'd be lucky to make 750 hp without the turbos if power scales up from the vr6 fairly evenly. Getting 100hp/liter N/A on a vr6 is full race engine territory and having 2.6x as many components will certainly have more mechanical loss.

What if Bugatti gets a bespoke 3.5L v8 that revs to 9k++ w/Rimac level output hybrid assist and eAWD? Special enough?

Derek is just a tough crowd for the 7-figure cars. Guess he figures that if you can't get more experience than driving a 7-figure old car, why bother with all that tech.

The best 'engine' you can put in a car right now is an electric one, period. It has 100% of the power, 100% of the time. The issue is our current battery technology sucks. An other way to look at it is this: let's say that right now, you could go buy a car that has a ICE-sized fusion reactor, it would still utilize electric motors to move the car, as they are still the best powertrain available.

100% of the torque* Power is proportional to torque times RPM so it's dependent on engine speed, which at startup is zero.

A 10,000 rpm V8 would, i think, be wrong for a Bugatti. Those cars, i think, should be effortlessly muscular, and revving an engine that far is not effortless. Exciting yes, but not fitting, in my opinion. Hybridised NA W16? That would be awesome. The special sound and just infinite electric torque.
