Geoff is going to walk us through his trial and error process on the mahogany garnish moldings 🔥www.hiltzautoc... #BADCHAD #HILTZAUTOCO #GARNISHMOLDINGS
I consider myself a woodworker. Geoff is not a woodworker, he is so many steps above a woodworker. He is at the very least a true craftsman and probably closer to being an artist.. Be proud of yourself Geoff, you have earned it.

Geoff is a true Craftsman and Thinker! Love all the specially made fixtures and Jigs; door stands, handmade inside and outside window fixtures, heat box, and Grandads old pencil sharpener! Complex window moldings without a single uniform, flat or straight section. Really like hearing your thought process, considerations, and approach! Much Respect! Another great video!

You can't find common building materials in any quantity here in Ontario. And if you can it's crazy expensive. The big lumber mills need to catch up to the demand yet. Building furniture has become super expensive. Watching Geoff use that sander brought back memories of working in my parents' furniture shop. They had a big sander with a 6' x 8" belt. That sucker was super abrasive and would go thru wood like butter. As well as the end of your thumbs as I found out one day. When I turned towards him with bleeding and ripped-up thumbs, my step-father's first question was "Did you get any blood on the wood, don't want it ruined." Such a caring man!!! The mouldings and the dash look extraordinary. True craftsman at work. Stay safe and stay healthy.

Hi there. I've just started watching your videos. I think your doing a very great job and seem to really know what your doing. I've been making and building custom interiors for over 50 years now. I've done a lot of wood work in everyone of them. Some have been a glass finish and some covered with upholstery and a lot of metal work to add for the trim work. I could tell that you were wanting the door window trim to be as one peace and I thought that was what he was going to do. BUT with it being in so meany peaces your going to have problems with the wood expanding and contracting along with the forces that are going to be put on everything when closing the doors. They will move and crack . He should have made them as one complete peace and had you to add any filler to take up for the gaps. Then after you have finished all of your door work and painting he could do his final sanding to allow for the paint thickness that way it will float inside the oping and will move with the door so it wont crack or move so much. He has done a great job on all of his work and I parse him for his skills. I just know from experience that it should a one peace frame. As for as going by how the original one was made he could fake those 3 seams to look like it. But who ever made the original ones probably didn't know how to make a one peace frame. You got to remember the year that it was made and by who it was made by. Not meany cars had all wooden trim windows. Most were wood caped at the top of the door panel and the other 3 parts of the upper door where just painted or had a metal trim to go around and hold the weather felt or rubber. But what he has made will work but with problems. Keep up all of your great work and I got a feeling your really going to make it in this cut throat business.

Interesting to hear that the housemarket situation in north america is messed up too. Interesting but frightening. Here in germany it is totally insane!!! The prices exploded the last few years on propertys. I was offered a small suburb property back in 2011, nothing special at all... but they wanted 145.000 for it. I said no and asked if they are insane. A few weeks ago the same property was on the market for 678.000 The situation here is more than insane... I try to figure out how i can own a property for a long time now, but each month that goes by, it gets more expensive For normal people its almost impossible to find sth affordable these days. In fact normal people, or the middle, doesnt exist anymore. Its only the poor and the very very rich.

It's looking real good. I was surprised to hear to that the each door frame are 3 pieces too but, it is smarter because wood and metal shrink and expand at different rates. If they were all one piece it could crack the wood, I would think.

I'm assuming that all the wooden pieces will be permanently installed after the whole car is painted both inside and out, right? Won't the paint thickness cause a tighter fit for the wood where you might have to sand off some of the paint? (again I'm assuming you'll put at least 3 coats) (and perhaps even more?)

chad, dont let that woodworker put poly on that trim. you should just spray it with clear. ive been spraying pick-up truck wood beds for 10 years with acrylic urethane clear coat. waterproof, UV proof, wont get damaged from the sun. any "wood" finish is meant for furniture that is indoors only.
@gwebster3500
3 жыл бұрын
I don't use poly. I use 2K Urethane. I have done many automotive interior wood sets over the last 20 or so years. I spray and sand back to flat, more finish, sand back, more finish, sand back and then polish. If you go back several videos you'll see the dashboard before I start finishing the finish.
