I find bugle calls fascinating. I didn't know there were so many calls other than Reveille, Call To The Post, and Taps. I played trombone in the high school marching band, and a trumpet player let me try his trumpet and explained to me that you can do bugle calls on any brass instrument if you know how to play any other, because a trumpet in open position works just like a trombone in 1st position, which gives you the notes you need for bugle calls.
@eddarby469

Yes, but these were about half the bugle calls we used. There are at least a dozen more including To the Colors, Call to CQ, Sick Call, Mess Call, Tattoo, Fatigue, Swim Call and Fire Call.
@jeopardy60611
2 жыл бұрын
@@eddarby469 Some of the calls you mentioned are featured in other videos. I didn't know there was a swim or fire call. Now that I think about it, I remember in one summer camp I attended, someone did "To The Colors" when raising the flag at an assembly, and did Taps at bedtime, and they could have done Mess for meals or Swim when we had free swim period.

Besides the standard dozen or so bugle calls required for the Boy Scout Merit Badge, over the years I collected many more; a few British calls (Stand To, Last Post, couple more) General Quarters/Battle stations (for Marines aboard ship) and a few odd U S Army calls (Stable call, for instance): But my pride and joy was The General's March. SO, at one time in my life, I could sound about thrity-six (36) calls - and fairly well at that. Long ago and far away, now.

Taps is special to me. Back in 1979, I was on a trip to Las Vegas with my parents, and we met up with my grandparents there. I was in an arcade playing a gun fighting game called Boot Hill. The machine plays Taps when the game is over, and my grandfather happened to see me playing the game and pointed that out to me. I didn't realize until I grew up that he pointed out the machine playing Taps because he was in the military. That was the last time I saw my grandfather before he was on his last legs in the hospital 3 months later.

Wow. The Norwegian signal for meal time is exactly identical to the American reveile. The Norwegian lyrics to this, is «Now there is food to get, now there is food to get, bring your own knife, spoon and fork». My grandfather would always sing this song when dinner was ready. «Nå er det mat å få, nå er det mat å få, ta med deg skje, kniv og gaffel». :)

revéille proper: I can't get 'em up, I can't get 'em up, I can't get 'em up this morning; I can't get 'em up, I can't get 'em up, I can't get 'em up at all. The corporal's worse than the private, The sergeant's worse than the corporal, The lieutenant's worse than the sergeant, But the captain's worst of all. Oh, I can't get 'em up, I can't get 'em up, I can't get 'em up in the morning; I can't get 'em up, I can't get 'em up, I can't get 'em up at all.

Really nice clear post, thanks! Great tone quality but untrue to the quality of most bugles. Could you make a recording showing some of the keys (often odd ball) and tone qualities of bugles (old to modern); My favorite bugle meets a U.S. Government bid requirement for bugles purchased between 1862 to 1877 (I believe) and plays in a key similar to our present Eb. Some of these bugles sound like a piece of garden hose and some are remarkably good. Also in the old west (Texas , Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Arizona etc. Cavalry Buglers sometimes sometimes played a smaller pitched horn (higher pitch) as a "recall" bugle. Always feed the horses after playing a few high pitches. If the horses got loose or were stolen they could often be recalled with high pitches = lunch. Thanks again.

Ft Hood, Texas - late 70's early 80's most of the calls were played over big loudspeakers...at least in the 1st Cavalry Division area... at the end of the day, if you were in your car and "Retreat" was played, you stopped, and, if in uniform, got out of the car and faced west. "To the Colors" was every morning, rain or shine, as the battalion hq had the stars and stripes raised. Kinda miss all of that!
