I loved this video! It was so heartwarming to watch the older gentleman share his knowledge and experience with TWO generations. The little dude telling his story about the squirrel and baby mice was adorable too.

I built a trap based upon his design and I've had similar results. I have one small change! Instead of using a walnut on the end of the wire, I have a whole clove (spice). Cloves are the aromatic flower buds of a tree. I wake up to find a rat in my trap every week or two. I use a plyable medium on the wire into which I press a whole clove. The smell of the clove hangs in the air in the plastic drum and it attracts the rat. The plyable medium can be dough, plastercine, putty-like modelling material. You could attach the clove another way, however, the rat must not be able to climb up the wire when the plank is dropped. The clove is an easier way for me to reset the trap. The only downside is I can only catch one rat at a time. The advantage is the rats does not die in my walls or ceiling. A most efficient trap. I check it daily.

We figured out a way. Balance is everything! With a little rebuild, the weight of the board falls back in place and the little magnet resets.

Just love Bill's little guy that had things to say, what a real cutey. I like Bill's version, going to build that one too. Today, I started the 33 gal barrel rolling juice-can version, parts are over at the machine shop being tooled. Nylon rod bushings on a 1/4" dia rod. Bill's magnet strength can be adjusted with paper shims to almost throw the smallest rat. Thats going to be fun too.

One thing for sure that I agree, these creatures are really smart, not always easy to catch them. I set up traps with baits before to come back the day after and find the traps still set but the baits were gone. It's like they know it's a trap and find ways to steal the bait without triggering the traps.

Make it self resetting similar to Matthias's mouse trap. You then be catching a lot more.

I made one and it has worked for a year. I have found that I don't need to put any floating seeds or anything on the water. The rats don't care about the water. I don't add salt to the water - unless you plan to eat the rat. The natural curiosity is enough. No peanut butter on the plank. Just bait on the wire as he says. I use clove spice. I am thinking about the idea of a very small counter weight and will make a plank that resets back to the magnet. I will make one. (Just joking about eating the rat).

When they chew on the wires to your home, or get in the walls, you need to get rid of them. Poisons can lead to other animals eating the dying rat and getting into the food chain.

Traps rely on numbers so 8-10 smaller versions would start to provide control for large infestations for a larger area. What about squirrels and chipmunks though, or is that trap inside to focus on infiltrators?

Thanks, I just built a smaller version out of a Kitty Litter bucket. Living on the edge of country and city has it's pro's and con's (Rats are a big con). I put a little peanut butter and oatmeal on the end of the board in hopes that it will do the trick.

Just fill it with water to the point that they couldn't climb/swim out. Then float a bunch of sunflower seeds on top. They will simply jump in and drown themselves. No need to over think it.

Victor® has some good information about rats at their Web site (www.victorpest.com), in the "Learning Center" area. If you live within 100 miles of the coast in the contiguous United States, it's likely that you're dealing with the smaller roof rats, while the larger Norway rats are generally found in the interior. They have different behaviors, so trapping methods and baits will differ.
