I love your van build , very nice. I also like the way you make your videos , very quiet, not a bunch of loud and unecessary rock and roll music playing in the back ground and to the point. By doing it that way it really helps the viewer pay attention to all the details of the van and appreciate it that much more. I think you may have missed your calling to become a videographer . Very well done!

We put almost 200k on an Astro, hauling 5 kids, enclosed trailer and monster custom roof box. basically it is a pick up truck with bed cover. Vortex V6 was awesome. Pulled our boat also. It was retired (sold). One of the best things is parts are readily available as they can be pulled from the million plus dead 1500 series pickups. Great Job. Kind of want one again.

Throw a set of extended shackles in the back. It sags back there and that would level it and give some extra clearance to stop chewing your tires. About a 30 minute job. You could also extend the rear bump stops a bit to keep from chewing them.

If your sliding door rear hinge is of the bolt on style, (early ones were welded), you can elongate the holes of the hinge. This will move the door away from the back tire. I’m running 255/70 16 BFG’s on mine. I’m also running the 2” body lift, journeys rear shackle/hanger kit and HD S10 leaf springs in the rear, and GM 1500 torsion keys up front. I had to trim and clearance the rear of the fender wells, but no rubbing issues.

Nice build. I had 95 RWD with 6" front/5" rear lift and 31x10.50's. Your back tires rubbing are from axle wrap on acceleration. IIRC, you can move axle back 1/2" by swapping the front spring mounts from one side to the other, but I did mine in 2005 so its been a while.

I really like hour rig. I think one of the ways you could combat the tire issue is by putting a bigger lift on it. I would think a 6” lift by using S-10 parts in conjunction with parts from a Journeys would help fix it. A little trimming of the wheel wells wouldn’t hurt either.

From the side view of your awesome van, it looks like the weight of the wood shelf and storage bins is causing the back end to drop more than the rest of the van. To compensate and better distribute the weight, have you considered adding air bags to your suspension? Do you think this might help a little with the rear tire rub? I love what you've done with your Safari. I've been considering either the Chevy Astro or GMC Safari for a conversion, but I'm also checking into a custom roof top to give me stand up room inside. I love the AWD in a less costly package than the larger 4WD vans out there. Great work on your ride!

Hi Sayer, What are the rims that you have? Also, what offset and width are you running? For your sliding door clearance, I believe there has been a few folks on astrosafari that have been able to increase the clearance between the van and the sliding door. I am not exactly how they are doing it, but look around the site and I am sure you can find it.

Thanks, my kind of video. I'm about to buy a 2005 Safari AWD, and will be doing a 2" lift. I'm wondering about wheels & tires....I'd like to avoid any rubbing, so is there a tire that is SLIGHTLY smaller? I'm not sure what the factory wheel size is, but mine are the steel ones, so wondering if sandblasting & painting (or powder-coating) those would be a good way to go, or should they be replaced with alloy wheels, and of a different size?
@slayerd4th
4 жыл бұрын
Watch the 3rd video cause I install the springs in the rear that would have prevented any rubbing. Those tires are the best fit for the van you won't have any issues if you get the lift and springs together. Also get some slightly longer rear shocks and reroute your rear brake line so it fits with the lift. These are all the things I did and have plenty of room and ride is great.

you got to have a little lift to have those wheels fit. they won't fit on stock hight. get the journeys 2in body lift. they also make some springs/ bushings that help offset so the tires won't rub. though you might still need to trim a little interior of the fender. but its not hard and pretty standard when putting on bigger tires.

You just need to add the Journey's off road 3-5" lift instead of the 2' - that will solve the wheel well rubbing problem and possibly the sliding door issue. Also, Mike at Journey's might be willing to replace your existing 2" lift shackles. The offset is best with Jeep wheels and spacers or factory GMC rims with 235 75 15. Looks good!

Yea, he needs the forward spring perches. Journeys sells the spring perches in the 3-5" lift, but you can still run the factory ride height hole. The spring perch eliminates the large rubber bushings that allow a bit of play in the leaf springs, it also adjusts the leafs back a bit to center the wheels/rear end in the wheel well. I'd also advise to get some adjustable shocks, something that lets to tighten the bounce a little so the wheels don't come so close to the wheel well so easily.

Problem with your rims rubbing the side door: I think your rims are too wide for your tires. Look how far your sidewalls extend past your tread (and sidewalls are the most vulnerable when off roading). Go a little narrower on your rims and you’ll clear the door. It’ll look better, too.

It really depends on who you know. A paint job of the whole vehicle can run you 2-4000 dollars. Umless you know someone or can do it yourself. In which enough paint for the whole van is about 200 at wal mart(raptor liner) comes with enough paint and the sprayer.. Than if you had a close friend or family member that would do it it'd maybe be 300 depending on what they deemed fair
