Superb video! Do I need to run Jekyll locally at all? My understanding was that Github Pages takes care of the interpreting part already. For instance, when I update the _config file in my repo, the changes are reflected on my site even without running Jekyll locally. I couldn't get other things to work this way though, like blog posts.

Good question -- the reason you'd want to run a local Jekyll server is to *preview* what your website would look like and see your changes in real time (at the URL: localhost). But once you've committed and pushed your changes to GitHub, your changes will be live on your real github site (.github.io). So theoretically you could edit your site, push your changes, and preview them on your live GitHub site but it's much easier to run a local jekyll server, make changes and see them instantly, and then push your changes when you think it looks good to be live. Hopefully that makes sense!

@@dataslice Thanks! The ability to preview is a huge boon indeed, Github needs ages to update. Really good content btw, I hope there are enough data science enthusiasts out there to make this channel fly!

Hi! Thank you for creating this tutorial. I've been trying to get this to work for a week now and I've finally got it running! (had to add gcc & g++ to path). But I am using netlify to deploy this website. I'm not sure if netlify is the problem but whenever I try to view through local 4000, it doesn't display anything but when I view it on my netlify deployment, it shows up all text but *no* styling. Could you help me figure this out?

Heyo, thanks for the vid! I'm having an error when it comes to the exec jekyll serve part; here's the output bundle exec jekyll serve bundler: command not found: jekyll Install missing gem executables with `bundle install` I definitely have jekyll installed (literally shows in the same terminal); I installed it with homebrew though, so perhaps this is the issue?

Hi, thank you for the tutorial. I followed everything but when I run the server with bundle exec jekyll serve I got this message: Jekyll 4.2.0 Please append `--trace` to the `serve` command for any additional information or backtrace. What's the issue? Thank you very much
@dataslice
3 жыл бұрын
Did you run 'bundle install' in the folder before you started the server? You could also try running 'bundle exec jekyll serve --trace' to diagnose the issue. It might have to do with one of the jekyll plugins not being installed

Thanks for the video. How can I get ruby in VS code? I just have the option to select 1. Bush in the terminal, but not 1. Ruby
@dataslice

I'm just using the normal terminal and running bundle exec jekyll serve to start my web server. As long as you have Ruby installed, I believe that should be enough

@@devanvelji6010 Hmm, I guess it's different with Windows. I'd try following this tutorial jekyllrb.com/docs/installation/windows/ and then trying to run the jekyll server either through the 'command prompt' or 'bash' programs on your computer

Thanks for your comment! The reason I go fast is because I want to give my viewer the most efficient explanation and not make a 30 minute video of keyboard typing and mumbling. It may help to pause the video or play it at 0.75x speed :)
