"A slow process" = "A lifestyle" There's nothing wrong with that. I would say it's what you should be aiming for. The exception may be if you're a competitive bodybuilder-- but most people will never excel at that to begin with, so most people should stop trying to live as if they were bodybuilders. It's just not a realistic goal for anyone without an exceptional genetic makeup for it.. Getting and staying in shape for life is a much better goal, and one that almost everyone can achieve. Yes, that includes having a well-muscled body.

Well, that's the problem. Most people bulk, but never actually cut. And then you reach your 40's, your metabolism slows down, and you're fat just like everyone who doesn't train. (The rest of this post just develops the ideas I expressed in my original post. Feel free to skip to the bottom for a TL;DR.) If you only put on one extra pound of fat a year, by your 40's you're twenty lbs. overweight; by your 50's, thirty lbs. overweight, by your 60's, you're carrying around 40 lbs. of fat... Bulkers who don't actually cut can end up even worse off. I realize the bodybuilding world believes in the dichotomy of bulking and cutting. But that's a false dichotomy (and as I noted, an unnecessary one for most people). There's no reason you can't gain/maintain muscle while losing fat or maintaining a lean body. The two processes are unrelated. (All that's needed nutritionally to build muscle is a positive nitrogen balance [proteins] and a relatively small amount of calories. Whether you also gain fat or not isn't a requirement of building muscle-- it's a result of eating too damn much. If the calories were actually needed for building muscle, they wouldn't have been stored as fat to begin with.) And whereas cutting calls for losing 3 to 10 lbs of fat a week (and sometimes more) you can lose a few pounds of fat per month instead, and because you aren't getting fatter during the Bulking stage, you can still hit your long-term goals. Gaining/maintaining muscle long-term without getting fat, depends on a LIFESTYLE of activity and training combined with eating according to your body's actual needs. Bulking (eating beyond your actual caloric needs because you think you have to "eat big to get big"-- and you just want an excuse to eat) and then starving yourself-- and your muscles-- while you try to lose the fat you unnecessarily gained, isn't a lifestyle you can maintain long-term. Nor is it a healthy one. TL'DR: It's time to end the "bro-science" of passing on urban myths from the 80's, just because we were told that's the way it works. Bulking and cutting doesn't actually WORK for most people; it's also unnecessary in order to reach realistic fitness goals for 99.5% of us. Some will disagree. That's fine. All I can say is I've tried both ways, and I prefer a lifestyle that actually works.

I appreciate it, I teach classes in exercise science so I get these questions a lot. Now that you've been working out for a little while, I assume you know that you will need to get into a moderate negative energy balance (eat slightly less than you burn/use throughout the day). I personally have used the NIH bodyweight planner to get an idea of how much I'd need to eat, and its been pretty good. Typically eating 500 kcal less than you use per day puts you on track for about one pound per week which is a good/realistic goal. The key to maintaining muscle mass while cutting is simple. You need to continue to lift heavy several times per week and make sure you're getting enough protein. A safe bet for protein is to start with 1 gram per lb of bodyweight, though the exact amount is still being debated. But most would agree that is enough to maintain/grow muscle while not going overboard. The mistake most people make is they go crazy with cardio and stop lifting as much while they cut. Cardio is a useful method to burn a few more calories per day but you will need to continue to lift heavy and get enough protein to maintain your muscle while cutting. If your diet is good (not overeating), you shouldn't have to go nuts with the cardio to lose fat. You may not be hitting PR's on a weekly basis in the weight room but it will help maintain that muscle during the cut.

It's like asking: what's the faster car trip, to drive forward very slowly to the finish line or to drive quickly in reverse then quickly forward?

another way is to put your body into a state of ketosis. Muscle mass will be maintained, while fat will "melt" away faster than simply being on a caloric deficit of course, there are those who will be incapable of maintaining muscle on such a diet. If you are insulin resistant, or have an endocrine disorder (say hyperthyroidism/graves) then your ability to build muscle mass, let alone maintain it; its very much improbable. Protein wasting is the main reason here. You will lose fat, but building or maintaining muscle is very difficult. I know the latter is a bit off topic but Ive encountered some who have had this issue. If they are properly medicated, then this diet will help to improve their chances of building muscle, and losing fat at the same time.

ketosis is the term used when discussing the "burning" or Fat. Ketones are formed from both DIET, and your own fat stores (being "burned, as the industry calls it) So yes, ketosis is ANOTHER WAY to burn fat, and either maintain your muscle and strength, or increase it. Its a FASTER way to get "cut" while not losing your "gains" if you do not know this, I suggest you read up. If youd like, I can teach you how this whole thing takes place, all the way down to the molecules. Let me know when youd like to be taught, Im available as long as you are willing to pay me for my time and effort. And in case youre wondering, your talking to a molecular biologist, focusing directly on genomes at the moment! Lech me know, mkay? Thanks U igit!
@Postermaestro
8 жыл бұрын
NYG_NYM_UNC #FreePalestine *Ketone bodies* are produced from fat molecules when glycogen levels are low, and gluconeogenesis isn't enough to provide sufficient glycogen, since the brain cannot directly use fatty acids for energy. Ketosis is simply the term used to describe that elevated levels of ketone bodies are circulating the blood stream. Exactly why is this a faster way to get lean and preserve muscle mass? Molecular biologist my ass. You're a student, studying biology, currently doing a course on genomes.

optypin it's kind of hard to explain to another person, but it really just means that you have a good understanding of when you are actually hungry, know when you need to lift, or simply just knowing how to respond to any given situation whether it be mentally of physically. So, it basically just means knowing how to act on intuition.

The body is a smart machine. If your body has stored energy in the form of fat, then your body will use the fat as energy instead of breaking down muscle. So no, you will not lose muscle as long as you have fat left.

Surplus on training days, deficit on off days. The resistance training program can vary widely. IMO, anything that produces high volume with progressive overload is A-okay.

Ive been lifting 10+ Years and I still use re-comping and it always works. People forget that they have an abundance of calories already called stored bodyfat. So building muscle while losing fat is possible if you are very careful. Everyone says "Where do you get the extra calories to build muscle?" Answer. Stored bodyfat. its all about nutrient partitioning.

My teacher taught us nutrition recently and his tips to lose weight and gain muscle is in your diet. You can do all the lifting you want, just eat less calories in a day. Cut the carbs and fats in your diet and raise the amount of protein and you should be able to gain muscle while losing weight. Just look up how much you need to eat to MAINTAIN your weight then subtract 500 calories and edit the amount of fats, carbs, and protein accordingly. For gaining weight, its the opposite; add 500 calories and change the nutrients accordingly.

The answer is, *You Can Do Both Together.* The effect of both may be slowed (a la 2:54) But I've done this and _am_ doing this and it works just fine for me aged 41 now, as it did before. Calories aren't the whole picture and neither is protein. There's a lot going on with growth hormone changes as you exercise and testosterone changes and they all play a part. Provided your hormonal levels are healthy and you eat well and adequately, you should be fine. Assuming your geentics aren't the least favourable set up.

I am a witness that YES YOU CAN !!!! Im 6ft 0 and weight around 206 pounds,I was fat,Had man boobs, love handles and a double chin. I was a good 26 pounds overweight, i started a ''CLEAN BULK'' Which means lifting weights which builds muscles and also kills fat and my nutrition was good,I avoided fast foods and jun food,And ate high protein foods, protein shakes, eggs and meat. 7 Months later I dropped from 206 pounds to 190 pounds ! And my arms, chest, back legs all looked bigger and more toned and a lot of my fat had disappeared ! So yes ITS POSSIBLE ! If your fat,You can also cut first,Lose all that weight and fat then start bulking.

It is possible. I've done it and got in the best shape of my life doing so. Unfortunately depression from real life events kicked my ass and I stopped working out at the gym and gained all my fat back, but I did get to keep most of the muscle mass I gained which was great. Despite that, my physique is much better looking after gaining the muscle as opposed to not having it when I was fat prior to working out and eating clean. Just eat lots of healthy foods like: grilled chicken, veggies, brown rice, fresh fish and lots and lots of water. Also you'll want wey protein isolate. I would recommend one protein shake a day. Supplements help too, especially fish oil. I lifted weights four times a week targeting different muscle groups on each day. (example: arms on monday, back and shoulders on tuesday, chest and traps on wednesday and legs on thursday). Always do about 20 minutes of post work out cardio at medium to high intensity. I did about 8 minutes of pre-work out medium intensity cardio to get my heart rate up so I'm burning fat throughout my weight trainning session. Do this and you'll get bulked up with muscle and slim down from the fat loss. It doesn't work over night though, and depending on how much fat you need to lose and how much muscle you want to gain, it's going to take awhile. It took me around 13 months to go from fat slob to sleek sexy guy getting all the girls. It's all in your head. You either want it or you don't. Repeat that to yourself everytime before you eat and everytime you don't feel like going to the gym and you'll succeed. It's a lifestyle not a choice. You don't lose fat and go back to old habits, you'll just gain it all back and that hard work was for nothing. I would have kept my physique had real life not kicked me in the nuts. Depression is a bitch.

You lose the most fat on a recovery day- even more if you do recovery walks, easy bike strolls etc. Also doing those activities actualy helps the body spread fatigue evenly in the body and therefore recovering it faster.Consider also regular massages- they also contribute for faster recovery.Everything that makes you recover faster makes you a better athlete- you get more quality from your workouts and will be faster and stronger than before.Streching is also a big part that you mustn't forget- a stronger body doesn't mean only muscles- a highly flexible body uses muscles more effectively than a less flexible one. Also when people say Cardio- no 2 Cardio exercises are alike- particularly running- you ain't gonna use a lot of hart and lung if you are sprinting or doing short efforts. If you are doing cardio the exercise must be at least 15 minutes without stopping- aerobic with high pulse. And also that type of exercise concentrates on developing functional muscle mass(endurant, with a good strenght to volume ratio), instead of volume(explosive with poor strenght to volume ratio). and by doing both lifting and cardio you gain something in the middle which is a perfect example of balance- strong without the extra kilos of muscle or overly lean- efficient=fit.

I have been losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time for the last 8 months. At a calorie deficit most of that time. I'd probably have more muscle if I was bulking but I'd also have more fat. It's all about balancing your priorities at that given time.

Dont intentionally bulk eat a good amount but allow your training to compensate for size. Remember actual bodyweight is only one half of the battle here is what I mean. I know gymnast who are 130 pounds but if u look at them u would think their like 180 plus pounds there are men I know who weigh way more and weigh the same but they don't have the muscle mass and leaness. Of a gymnast or bodybuilder so you should focus more of gaining muscle va gaining weight on the surface it apears there the same but their not. To sum it up train eat train eat and enjoy it

There are thousands of people out there working out while doing the intermittent fasting and still gaining muscle without gaining fat as well. It's very possible, very doable and not too hard either. The people using the method do gain muscles slower, but don't have to worry about hitting the "plateau" at all, except for the genetic one, which like the video notes is inevitable, and that's actually an excellent thing. In fact combining the intermittent fasting with constant, steady-pace exercise, even if it's simply calisthenics will keep building muscles, at a rather slow pace compared to the gym bulking, but it will keep doing so without gaining fat, and it will be noticeable. Like the video mentions in one place, one must take special care to either eat exactly the amount of calories they need daily or very slightly over it, while doing the intermittent fasting at the same time. It's a bit tedious in the begging but once you get used to it, it becomes easy.

I think if a person is consistent on working out in anyway he/she will reach the goal. Just don't give up, and always challenge your self. I have lost weight by only walking fast on treadmill, and i think if i cut some bad habits, such as drinking soda everyday, eating than sleeping, eating heavy dinner, eating unhealthy food everyday, eat high carbs food, etc etc, you will reach the goal, wether its a long or short process. A trick if you wanna lose weight i learned is that if you cant change the type of food you eat, at least cut your meal to half, or try not to feel full. Trust me it works for me, and i hope it works for you. Gd luck kids 🙂
