It’s called making it a focal point, it’s also only protruding maybe 10 inches, so less depth than a lot of floating shelves. Last I remember my dads big ass tv was at least 24 inches deep so this takes up significantly less space.

As an av engineer, i would holesaw a few holes in that top board above the tv towards the back, you'd never see them, and you'd probably lengthen the service life of the screen.

Definitely read the manufacturers Installation instructions some suggest a minimum clearance above the tv unit. Ventilation restrictions can cause issue's. Great video but thought it's worth mentioning

this is done exclusively for RGB illumination. there is a reverse technology when a niche for a TV is made in the wall. There is one weak point in such solutions - heat distribution, because the back panel of the LCD TV gets very hot, and this heat needs to be diverted somewhere.
