The Diamond Dave era will always be my all-time favorite band. That era has the most rabid and loyal following of any band. It's too bad that Ed, and now Alex and Wolf, have been total pricks to their loyal fans. It pisses me off so bad. I know Alex has to be sitting on some never seen before footage of them in their prime. Say what you want about KISS and Gene Simmons, but at least they care about their fans who put them in fat city addresses. KISS has so many pro-shot videos of them in their prime and we have NONE! 😡

Totally agree yet both are sonically different, 1st Van Halen was pure freakin hunger and raw, (though running with the devil bores the crap out of me) for me the album begins with Eruption grabs you by the balls and doesnt let go! I understand protecting intellectual property, but so many classic bands overlook how videos like this bring new generations to their music. Great documentary! I am one of the few that feels musicians did get the proverbial wrench in the gears when file sharing and Napster came about. I believe its the reason there are far fewer albums made today. Artist need to be contantly on tour to make the lions share of their money. It's better to be on tour playing the same stuff for ticket sales, than to be making new music to be practically given away. Artust do need to write and record songs fans will want to hear, but certainly there is a lack of good music presently because I feel bands/artists aren't putting out the amount of albums they did in the 80's and 90's.

Ironic side note: So after the go ahead was given in the 70s to strart producing the TV show The Bionic Woman that would make Lindsey Wagner a star, scouts were sent out to look for filming locations in LA. One person found the perfect location for a house that looks like a palace that would be owned by a wealthy sheek. They were allowed in and were talking with the owner over the details of the plans to use it. While that was going on the scout could hear a ruckus going on in the basement. Shortly the noise stops and out from the basement comes a young man who immediately 2 young guys sit down in the living room and eats a big bowls of cereal. The kid was David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen and the band practicing was obviously Van Halen. They were practicing in Davids dads house. It was used in the 1st season. 😂 For the record i heard this story in a 6 million dollar man podcast by the guy who scouted the house.

0:43 this is technically wrong. The first use of keyboards on a Van Halen album was actually Van Halen I, which was a piano key sweep in the beginning of Runnin' with the Devil. While you may be using the term "keyboards" to refer to synthesized music only, its important to point out that a piano keyboard is in fact a keyboard instrument.

It's amazing to be that studio execs would have the balls to tell a world famous band like Van Halen to record an entire album from scratch "within weeks." They would have have every right to say a big F U to them and (like Tom Scholz) say "you get an album when we give you an album." But for some reason, they actually complied. This is probably why I've heard Eddie say he hated the album, especially because of they were forced to pepper it with a lot of cover tunes. But what was always weird is that I thought that album was great! I though it was much better sonically and content wise than Van Halen II for example. Thank God Eddie was able to already have some of those masterpiece gems at the ready to stick in the album on almost zero notice, like the fantastic riff in Little Guitars and the perfection of Cathedral, which is even more impressive when you see him perform it live. It's otherworldly.

That really blows about being censored. I loved the first 2 episodes you dropped. Looking forward to the rest, and hoping you are still able to get a compelling story across, given all the bullshit. And Alex, if you are reading this…. Lame.

The record labels/older bands NEED to figure out that THEY are hurting themselves and their legacy. They dont get it, eventually they will be forgotten if people cant do things like this or post covers. Absolutely unacceptable. The genie is out of the bottle, and it has been out for 20 years!

I agree, but trust me they don't care or get it. When streaming first came along they tried to fight it instead of embracing it etc. Excecs in almost all big companies are so out of touch. They live in diff worlds than we do. And so do some big "rock stars".

@@TheTapesArchive that’s why I love Rick Beato ranting about it. Don Henley said he employed a team of 30 people that report music on YT that isn’t licensed. Unreal. The time you’ve put into these vids is unreal, I love this band and because of Ed I play guitar. Seeing this info is fantastic. Illegitimi non carborundum!

People can't even play their own guitar of some songs on youtube because of licensing..It's ridiculous and will hurt those bands in the long run..

@@daveyboy8907 100%, it kills the conversation totally. Kate Bush has had a massive surge recently because of stranger things, I wonder if the label pulled all those covers down, if so they shot themselves in the foot. My friend George Fludas has the best Bonham tribute page on IG, he was getting absolutely hammered with strikes a while back. George is a walking encyclopedia of Bonham knowledge, if he had given up it wouldve been a huge loss. Bonhamology is his YT page, his knowledge of what Bonham did on songs in 69 compared to 76 is astounding. Its sad man, Labels have to get it together

:00 I understand that portions were removed per Alex Van Halen's/Warner's request. Copyright law is there to protect publishing and songwriter royalties, of course. HOWEVER, in a case like this, this wonderful project helps prolong the LEGACY of the band, regardless of the law. The law itself will NOT help bring in new monies ( just ask the Zappa and Nelson families after their famous family members passed away and were almost forgotten about ). The band will only encounter massive problems without licensing their music for future generations. This is an outstanding set of videos. Nicely done! But Warners/Alex ( along with more than a few record company executives ) need to rethink their " strategies. "

Thanks! And of course I agree. But as others have said and I agree, it's their right to do with their IP even if we disagree. But in the long run it will be their loss.

Decades ago, when I heard about how Intruder came to be, my drummer and I freaked. Our first album, we did a video for the "single" we were pushing. We shot the video, very home made looking like the Pretty Woman one, and once it was edited, we found we needed more music so we came up with an instrumental rampage tacked on the end instead of the beginning. I remember thinking: "What are the odds this happened to us and VH?"

@@TheTapesArchive On the stuff about Ed going round to Frank’s house I heard an interesting story…Someone said Vai mentioned that Ed was playing a guitar round there and the nut was causing sustain problems. So Ed promptly got a screw driver and jammed it under the nut to raise things to improve sustain. Vai says he remembered Eddie playing round there with this screw driver sticking out of the fretboard…lol…However makeshift it was with Ed if it worked it WORKED…lol
