Man, you've gotta get some rice growing in there! It's amazing how quickly new life just shows up when you have a water source. We're in the middle of Phoenix, but our landlord refused to fix our pool for about 6 months. At first, it was just mosquitoes, but shortly after, we started seeing dragonflies and all sorts of other insect larvae in the pool. Raccoons, skunks, coyotes and even had an owl for little while. Makes me wish we could create more greenspace in our cities

I love that when ed was explaining the filter your eyes just glazed over. It's great to see you noob out. This pond was a bit of a wasted opportunity. You've already diverted your grey water into the garden, diverting it into a a submerged planted "wetlands" reservoir would have allowed you to divert your sink water as well. Essentially it would have turned your entire pond into a natural filtration and nutrient enrichment system which could then be used to water and feed your plants. You wouldn't be able to sit on the filter, but you'd have a ton more plants, would look stunning and filling the reservoir wouldn't have wasted a drop of water. Anyway, welcome to the aquatics community.

@@epicgardeningWhat kinds of fish did you choose? You can actually hang nesting boxes for bats (and birds that you want to attract of course) local to your area, too. They swoop up a lot of mosquitoes and it looks so cool to see them flying. To provide nesting boxes at a suitable location as a substitute for further natural habitats to add to your truly epic pond is really easy.

I have a 2.5k gallon pond and it's 7 years old. Never have a mosquito problem. The fish eat a lot of the eggs and larvae and the pond plants attract dragonflies which means anything that *does* make it to adulthood gets eaten by them. I love being out by it during mosquito season because I never get bit (and I was always the mosquitoes favourite snack before).

You'll have to keep an eye on those plants in the pond if you don't have something to eat them eventually. I know the water lettuce looks REALLY cool once it spreads, but it can become invasive REALLY fast! My mom got some and it sends out runners (kinda like strawberries). She gave me a bunch to bring back to the farm with me for one of our ponds that needs some help. Unfortunately, something ate it all. (I suspect it was the cows.....they'll eat anything green!) But, I'll just get more from her again in the future. ;) I loved that you used the bio-balls with the filter. I've seen those used with salt water tanks, but not with ponds. However, it makes total sense to use them this way. They will help build your ecosystem in no time! With everything you've accomplished in the past year, it will be interesting to see what develops this year. You've already made mention of several things, so I'm looking forward to future videos. Bravo! EPIC project with an EPIC outcome!
