I would take this truck over any new model. Back in 1999 I bought a 1995 GMC Sierra. It had 40,000 miles on it and other than a few cosmetic things it was basically the same truck as this one. I wish I never got rid of that truck and I'm sure I would still be running strong today.

1:42 popup The Vortec 5700 (L31) is actually a Gen I small block, so no it wasn't discontinued in 1996 but rather carried on until 2002. That's why the heads are backward compatible, while LS heads are not (pretty sure LT heads are not compatible either.) The Vortec designation often gets it improperly classified as a Gen III, when all the truck engines became known as Vortecs (5.3 etc.)

nice setup. It would be low budget to me, but I see the other comments. I only see the crankcase breathing mistake.. but you mentioned it. Passenger side takes air in, driver side is the hot exit...that gets the pcv valve. you can make use of the classic looking air filter housing and remain the old school look. The rod ratio is very hard on the 383.. its an engine to keep rpms down like factory. I remember when it came out in a car craft article in the 90s. I had SBC in 3 different projects.. before the LS came out

The problem with 350 upgrades has got to be the fact that LS motors are cheaper and easier to work with. The cost of the EFI system alone, $3500, is more than buying the LS engine and swap kit. In most cases, at least where I am, junkyard 350's are becoming more expensive than LS engines if similar mileage and age. That being said, this is a cool build, and one I thought of pursuing but the EFI is the biggest barrier for upgrades to these trucks.

They don't want to evacuate the air conditioner because "eco conscious" but will take the truck to the local coin wash and "clean" all that greasy grim right down the local sewer system 🤔

Accessory Drive?!?! Im putting a 406 in mine with tall valve covers. My stock 5.7 accessory drive brackets that Im trying to use will not clear the tall valve covers. What did you guys do to avoid this problem?
