To clarify, Daniel Smith doesn’t add animal byproducts to their watercolor paint binder. The entire line is considered “vegan friendly” except for colors containing PBk9 (ivory black) of which there are only 3 of their main line. My blog post goes in-depth about the toxicity research. Read that before commenting about it (link in description). For some reason toxicity in paint can be a polarizing topic, so be courteous in the comments if you discuss it. Rude or unnecessarily antagonistic comments will be removed without warning.

I have some concerns about those Primateks not declaring what is used inside, because even when they are marketed as "made with real minerals" the reality is that under the microscope they are just pigment with a tiny part of minerals inside(sometimes the majority just cheap ones like quartz in amethyst genuine). I say this based in a huge controversy few years ago when a geologist discovered it and emailed Daniel Smith to clarify this, receiving back a very unprofessional answer. Under that evidence I could perfectly suspect that toxic or not lightfast pigments can be used in primateks, without any warning, and with an overpriced tag based in a morally questionable marketing strategy, which is a terrible way to treat clients.

Except for Kimberly Crick's tests, since she's so rigorous and can test them in conditions I can't. I love her approach of testing then diluted as well, and for a year. It's just a bummer that for me that one year kinda becomes three, since the winter season in Sweden is very likely to skew those results 🙈

I am housebound and focus on florals and still lifes. I yearn for painting landscape but watching your videos I travel vicariously with you in Scotland. I think you should write to John Cogley, immediately. He owns Daniel Smith. Weekly wc artists are featured on KZitem and Zoom (Fridays). At least check him out. Lots on the internet. I agree with the sentiment of minimising the use of toxic pigments, but I'm not sure how much impact removing them from my palette will make on either a personal or environmental level. The amounts of cadmium and cobalt in artists' pigments that even the most avid painter will use in their lifetime are relatively tiny. According to the review article that you linked to, the most common and most concentrated source of cadmium exposure in humans is in the food we eat via the use of agricultural chemicals. Similarly it is industrial paints and pigments, and batteries that account for the vast majority of heavy metal environmental contamination. As for carcinogenicity, as with most things, the effects are very much dose dependent. In the 19th century, arsenic was used to produce emerald green (Scheele's green). Many people suffered from chronic arsenic poisoning because the chemical leached out of fabrics and wallpapers and was absorbed through the skin. (Milliners in particular were afflicted due to licking dyed threads and other millinery components when making hats, hence Lewis Carroll's "mad hatter". Also, beware that gorgeous illustrated book from the 19th C!; use gloves when turning those pages). Cadmium is not significantly absorbed through the skin, but cobalt can be (but remember, actual toxicity is dose dependent). Here's my take: If you can eliminate cadmium and cobalt colours from your palette and are happy with the alternatives, then fantastic. If, like me, you don't want to part with your cad colours and your gorgeous cobalt turquoise then don't eat it, wear a N95 mask and gloves when handling pigment powders, wash your hands and dispose of paint responsibly.

Daniel Smith quickly became my favorite watercolor brand when I first began painting and I’ve taken flack before for not caring for W&N! To each his own. Over the years I have accumulated I think 88 colors. The only ones of your choices that I do not currently have is the deep scarlet, and bloodstone. I have been wanting both, especially the bloodstone. Oh I take that back the yellow stone one with a state name in it I don’t have and the Burgundy yellow ochre. When I swatched the dot card I was blown away by how many subtle variations there are, it’s amazing! I chose Burgundy yellow ochre because is more subtle in my eyes. It is perfect for tinting just a hint of earthy yellow into something. And same for the lemon yellow. In the past I always used super powerful yellows just in case I needed that power, but I always struggled to mix down to a more subtle color. So my new yellows are better suited to the colors I typically mix. Very enjoyable! I can’t believe people would give you flack for not liking a brand. It is so personal!! What is wrong with people… Actually I can believe it because I get comments criticising the fact that I avoid certain colors and it’s like really?? To each their own. But I’ve been wondering for a while and have not found any answers about their potential impact on the environment. Unlike synthetic pigments, natural pigments come from mining so do you know anything about that and does that impact your choices? To me I’m guessing it’s kind of like using leather-it’s natural (and leather alternatives are made of plastic, so they’re harmful) but then it also has an environmental impact so I’m a little lost ^^ Any insight on natural pigments is welcome :)

I understand that. I am saving all my unused paint for future requirements (if I have some kind of special commission) and future workshops, where I’d like to provide students with high quality paint to test out.

I use both almost every day, I love them both! :) That’s the hard part about youtube, it takes so much time to make a normal video that I have to choose one usually so some people miss out on their favorite medium

Awesome new palette! Great choices! Green Apatite Genuine is one of my all time faves. You mentioned Sodalite. Love that one too. Amethyst and Minnesota pipestone have been on my list forever. Making a trip to the art store today 🤩

Terrific video I enjoyed the way you smashed and explained your thoughts on the colors. It was a relaxing moment, and I discovered a few that I haven’t used before.

I didn't realise Cerulean Blue contained cobalt. I looked up my acrylic paint I use and sure enough it's a part of the pigment used. I got rid of my cadmium yellow n reds, and my Cobalt Blue... looks like it is bye bye to my lovely Cerulean Blue to. Admittedly I didn't fall apart without my cadmium colours and cobalt, I will surely survive this change. I am guessing it is the pigment in my Winsor n Newton gouache Cerulean Blue to, sigh. I paint in my dining room around my family, it isn't worth the risk. My only regret is I wasn't aware of this earlier.

Beatuiful colors you've choosen. Green Apatite genuine I have and I love, too. Unfortunately Daniel Smith is so expensive in Germany. More than our German brand Schmincke. Wish you much fun with your new colors and will be happy to see your paintings. ❤

You picked many of my favorites 😊 I love the genuine colors I got in the PrimaTek sample set. Quin. Burnt Orange is stunning color. You picked a few I'd love to have as well. Manganese Blue Hue and Diopside Green Genuine. I also love jewelry and Green Chrome Diopside gemstones are stunning and DS captures that beautiful shade perfectly. 🥰 Have a blessed weekend. ❤

I have noted recently that a lot of the younger KZitemrs who do painting videos put a lot of weight in colours being vegan. What I like about Sarahs videos, being an old paint dinosaur who honestly doesnt care what is in our watercolour paints (as the amount dispersed in nature from them is absolutely minimal compared to the pollution from the big petro chemical industries, and I also dry my pigments in the water to make grey watercolours) so long as they do the job, is that Sarah states this without any of the ” holier than thou”-attitude I more and more see among the young watercolour you tubers. While I respect anyones choices I have to say I am a bit tired of being preached to. I know the young are idealistic and want to change the world, but it is much easier to find an appreciative ear if stated with politeness and respect, as in this video. I of course know that it is a choce what videos to watch, but it is a bit sad when you have found an artist whose work you like and then cannot watch withou getting a climate lesson, as anyone with a brain can miss we have to take care of animals and our planet for their sake.? Sorry if this comes out harsh, English is not my native tounge. I just wanted to say I think Sarah walks a true and good way in her approach to her choic of watercolours and appreciate not being preached to!

Yep, my approach is to share what I know. People will make up their own minds anyway. I'm not into preaching. If I were, you'd know it! I would literally buy a soap box and stand on it 😂

Thanks for this Sarah, great info into your research as usual. I found it difficult enough to choose 30 from DS to fit my pallette. You have chosen several I use but it has me questioning the safety behind some I chose eg nickel azo yellow and rich green gold. I have only avoided cobalts and cads so far...( thanks so much for sharing your spreadsheet on the blog with all that valuable info)

Hi Sarah, the DS colours you have chosen are beautiful. I also bought 20 of them and I am totally thrilled. You bought some that I'm going to get as well. Moonglow and Maroon are my favourite colours for shadows in the rocks. Thank you for doing the work and explaining so much. I look forward to you making videos with the new colours. I got your brushes and I am so excited:)). They are like a treasure on my work table. It was good to hear that you also have times when you don't know what you want to paint. Now spring is coming soon and the colours are exploding. Happy painting, dear Sarah. Gabi x

Thank you so much for making the spreadsheet available! I was just getting ready to do this for Daniel Smith paints as I also try to only use vegan paints without heavy metals. This is great timing and I'm excited to put together my own palette with this information!

every season has different colours: pale spring greens are just not late summer's deep, rich greens; winter blue sky is not summer's. Changing palette colours per time and subject just seems natural. I have mostly DS colours because that's what's available in my small town and my husband gifted me all my paints. He has excellent colour taste. Our palettes aren't so different!

Such a great video! I just got back from my local art store and picked up some more DA colors. I’ve fallen in love with moonstone undersea green and Amazonite genuine. Buff Titanium is a color I purchased in the last couple of months. I haven't used it much as of yet but I know it's going to be a useful color to have in my palette. I wasn't aware about cerulean blue. Once my tube is gone I will have to replace it with something else since I try to use paints that don't have metals, etc. in them. Thank you for sharing your findings!
