I think adding a campus shuttle bus to get from one area of the university to the other would be great. Walkability and bikeability are fantastic, but a shuttle would add some accessibility for folks who have mobility issues, especially in the Superior winters. Also, I like having the elementary school on campus. I could see it being a magnet/charter school where kids come and are taught in some sort of specialized subjects while also allowing education students at the university to gain experience.

In the UK a lot of campus universities outside cities are built around old stately homes and country houses that were originally owned by the people who founded the university. Maybe the college building is the old house owned by the founder that has been transformed into a law school as the university has been built up around it.

It’s also quite common to have several different campuses belonging to one uni, particularly if it is a city university or one which has undergone significant expansion, eg, Bristol for the former, or Gloucestershire (which is based in two nearby towns). I know it's well beyond when this video was posted, but thought I'd give an explanation that maybe works a bit better in a US historical context: Throughout the 19th century, there were a number of massive land grants for the purposes of building colleges and universities, and this could very well have been one, which would account for the older architectural style. Ofc it doesn't necessarily make sense in such a rural area, but I could see a reality in which such an institution was founded in an ill-fated attempt to bring education to a rural community that simply didn't have the resources to support it, and is only now being revitalized by the arrival of all these new people. It's also possible there used to some larger settlement here that was eventually abandoned, which would further justify the existence of such an old school in the region.

Presumably, Johnson Aggregates funded the building of the Geologic Research Institute (rather than a geography institute), probably even partially endowing its ongoing activities. The Governor probably conditioned the bequest on the naming of the Institute after her grandfather who founded the company, so it would be the Johnson Geologic Research Institute. Its graduates would have a variety of internships at Johnson Aggregates, with excellent career opportunities after graduation.

Really loving the series! One piece of feedback on the university neighborhood: there should be corner stores. The pedestrian-orientated strip of shops is great but for people on the far end of the neighborhood that would be a 30-45 + minute walk. Fixing this could also be a great place to discuss the decline of neighborhood shops in NA. For as long as history humans have been selling goods out of their domicile, but in recent decades governments have been restricting the ease of setting up businesses' in single-family neighborhoods.

As for the clashing college and uni aesthetics I think I can speak on this! I go to a Canadian university and this is actually very common in my area, the original university is an older more traditional campus with some really old brick and mortar buildings but as it’s expanded out, it’s become more modern looking. In fact the old engineering office wing is located directly beside a large sky scraper looking tower with full wall glazing. There are a few colleges scattered around the area not far from the university that are also very old and almost Victorian. The area that I live was actually an old Scottish settlement so I think there’s a lot of European influence especially for the architecture of the vocational college near the newer university! I think it’s a cool opportunity to use the college as a historical contrast to the quickly developing county, maybe it’s a memorial campus for one of the original trail blazers in Magnolia

My university is pretty similar too! It's about 120 years old and the oldest buildings are very traditional. Right next door you have 40s-50s brick, 60s-70s brutalist, and across the highway you have modern sandstone. Even the newer buildings meant to mimic the look of the older buildings on the quad are still obviously modern in comparison. It's honestly rather eclectic and helps add to the character and story of the university, so I think it's pretty realistic here.

Portland State University in downtown Portland, OR is a great example of a campus integrated into a dense urban core. Great episode! I noticed that the central plaza in front of the main building would almost definitely have desire paths form as students cut through the grassy area in the middle to get to adjacent buildings on a straighter path. Perhaps you could add some diagonal paths in the corners to keep the grass from being trampled PS. The university I used to go to had a campus that used to be a military training camp until a few decades ago. The barracks were converted to administrative buildings, smaller buildings with a couple classrooms or offices for startups sponsored by the university, and the largest one was made into a secondary building for the law faculty. There was also a lot of unused space, so they built several larger buildings for some of the faculties that outgrew the main campus (CS being the main one), a library, a massive dormitory and a park. As a result, you get some very old classicist buildings next to very modern ones.

Can I say... I loved this Magnolia County series and can't wait to see how this city grows! I have a few suggestions for you though, feel free to use the ones you like the most. 1. Placing a medical university around the campus, to boost healthcare across the area. 2. Keep an eye on potential high school upgrades, otherwise college and university buildings could struggle with a lack of students. 3. Connecting a bus line from the county's train station to the campus. 4. Placing a public train station near the campus, to allow more transport options to the university. 5. Bike lanes in the county, especially on some roads around the city. 6. Use development points for police headquarters, fire station, and hospital.

One thing that could be a cool project for this build now we have a university: Something like the "High Tech Campus" in Eindhoven in the Netherlands. I visited there earlier this year for my job in the UK. It's a business park with office spaces that companies can rent. several large tech companies in the Netherlands need extra office space as their own HQ campuses are now too full. But the area itself was more like a forest getaway retreat. Trees everywhere, small lakes, it was incredible. The car parks/parking lots were covered in greenery. Now Magnolia County has a university it may attract big tech companies and workers for those jobs will want pretty work environments :)

I also like using office zoning as the low-rise general-purpose campus buildings that have random classrooms and office spaces, and commercial for standalone dining halls.

This was a very impressive build only made possible by your attention to detail including but not limited to browsing all the building assets to find ones that worked. Commitment paid off, this looks very good. My only criticism is that you pitched earlier in the video the roundabout as a main entrance but it ends up just having a tiny road connecting it to the campus. If this really is a flagship university, then aesthetics would probably be at least somewhat accounted for to make sure visitors (future students?) to the campus think it looks nice/impressive coming in through the main entrance. Even something like a gate (if they have one) and a larger road with something at the end (could be a small visitor's center) will help make that entrance from the highway look more main. Right now I would think that based on where the parking and larger road is the back of the technical college was the main entrance.

Very interesting take on a campus. I would have never thought to use that much pedestrian street, in fear of CIMs not walking such long distances. Three* things I'd like to suggest adding. 1. A small livestock farm. As you yourself say this is university farming, and livestock are an important part of the "ground to table" education. Doesn't have to be a major farm by any means, just enough to have a small amount of the most common animals such as chickens, pigs and cows to serve as a teaching tool. 2. A public transport platform plaza. Somewhere for students from near and far to get on and off a bus heading off into the town, the intercity train station or to a neighboring city via bus. 3. Maybe a bit more commercial space? After all students are there 24/7, so a plaza surrounded by small cafés, restaurants and convenience stores would make sense. Saving students from needing to head into the town proper to get every day items.

There is audio, but it's still processing the video, so that might be the issue. Very sorry, but it should be ready shortly! I didn't realize it would release to members before processing

I work at a university campus and one thing I think you’re missing is a pedestrian path for the chancellor to walk or take a bike or golf cart to work. Around the same time as students arrive and leave, traffic can get crazy and the chancellor can easily benefit from a path less travelled.

I used to work at a radio observatory. A radio telescope would not be found that close to the main campus, because radio telescopes require "quiet." AKA, cellphones and other signals produced by human activity mess with the data. Radio telescopes are typically built as far away from other uses that produce signals and interference as possible. Students who intern at the observatory are usually shuttled there and are provided lodging nearby for the duration of the internship. I don't think there's a good way to reflect this in CS2 yet, but the areas surrounding the radio telescopes are generally fenced off and secured because the frequencies produced by the dishes when they are active are rather harmful to human health. The observatory I worked at doubles as something of a nature reserve-- informally. The surrounding area is mostly woods and provides a great deal of untouched habitat. For the sake of realism, I'd recommend relocating the telescope to an unpopulated area at high elevation, and surrounding it with nature reserve. It might have to be an imaginary nature reserve, AFAIK CS2 doesn't have that feature yet, but maybe you can include some parks? Also I agree with another commenter about the geologic building. It seems to me that geology would take precedence over geography in a mining town. Love the build!

Great episode! I really liked the abundance of pedestrian paths - it’s often overlooked by many who focus solely on creating roads for vehicles. Also, I’d like to point out that having only 4-5 commercial spots seems a bit scarce for such an area. I’d suggest adding more. Additionally, wouldn’t it be great to connect the university area with the other side of the riverbank? Or perhaps create a promenade where students can stroll and relax.

You could replace the clinic with a hospital and make it a "teaching" hospital and school of medicine. Another option or suggestion would be to add a fire department near the police station or clinic and have a "Public Safety" School. Could also just rename those buildings like "Magnolia Police Academy" or "Bend Fire Academy" Great build and video! Loving this series

Sweet build! This university reminds me of Michigan Tech and its main priority to develop engineers for the nearby mines. I would imagine a community would spur up around the university for off-campus housing and plenty of commercial within walking distance.

I think a good background for the contrast in buildings could be that the College was originally a mansion of a wealthy landowner from the height of the industrial revolution and in the present day it sat vacant. So the state purchased the mansion from the estate of the former landowner and turned the mansion into the regional college and then later on they built the surrounding buildings into the campus to accommodate the growing population of the county and state.

I think the the “college” asset should be 3 things! It should be the offices for admin, lecture halls/conference rooms, and lastly but largely it should be a student center! I went to a liberal arts school in the south and we had a building that was a 18th century mosque! It functioned as a building where the school would host, orientation and welcome events as well as a hang out area for students. It had several rooms that were filled with air hockey tables and ping-pong tables, as well as pool tables. And there was a small “refreshment stand “in the first floor. The school had spent a great deal of money modernizing it. It had tons of color, changing lights and cool designs in the architecture on the inside as well as modern artwork all over the place. They also used it as a gallery for the students that went to the school. As a back story: the Bailey family lived in a mansion on the outskirts of town. The Bailey family played a large role in the community. They were always on the city council and were involved in the school systems heavily throughout the years. They made a great deal of their money from transit. They owned a small regional shipping company named Bailey transit that began in the 1700s. But as time moved on, and the Amazons of the world pushed small, regional shippers to the side the family got out of the business and moved from the area. The college purchased the grounds and mansion from the family to developed the college. So the new student center would be the old mansion with a modern retro fit, and it would be named Bailey Hall.

Great video. One of my favourites of the series Two things: - Isn’t it a bit odd to have an elementary school on campus? Maybe it would make more sense to put in that neighbourhood for professors (would be another draw for the neighbourhood) - maybe instead of a farm right next to the beautiful river, wouldn’t it be more picturesque and indeed realistic to build a big and beautiful park where students hang out?

(At the point of video) CS2 really needs Greenhouses and other Agri-Halls! My Grans used to live in small village that served as rather major Agri School at the time. What I remember is the rows and rows of Greenhouses (tunnels, boxes, flower halls etc) and Animal Barns, Pens and Pastures. The school itself had like 1 or 2 "experimental" fields 'nearby', not at the village, the "campus" (if you could call it that) or near Anyones' fields. I understand they were for crop research and cross-breeding purposes so they tried to limit/minimize the contamination to production fields. That area didn't really suit for Fruit Trees but they had lots of green spaces with different Apple Trees and lots of Plum Trees and it seemed to be Students job to keep those spaces maintained. For fieldwork, they used local Farmers in large radius as "Apprentice Learning" type of service. Especially haymaking times were busy as all the students took part in the process! Animal & Pens etc were owned by the school and they ran it as a normal business where, once again, students could learn from professionals on the side of "normal" studies.

Here's another thought when landscaping: it's going to be difficult for the university to mow the lawns when they're completely surrounded with bushes. Logistically it might be better as a mulch bed (plus mulch is healthier for the bush and tree roots than a lawn it has to compete with). Otherwise make some spots wide enough for egress for a riding mower to pass through. University looks great, love the creative entryway sign!

Having different styles of building on the campus actually makes it seem more realistic. Campuses are built up over time so it makes sense to have buildings with varying styles and it makes it seem like the university actually grew organically.

Hey Fire Chief Guy here, For this size city there would be multiple fire stations. Also the collage could use a fire station for a student Firefighter program. That’s positive in two ways. There would be fire coverage and then a realistic Unique addition to the university for the state fire collage. And also a hospital on campus is not unrealistic as well. Some collages have hospitals to train students in a real hospital environment. 🚒🚑

Also, missed opportunity to add the medical research facility to the campus :3

i honestly dont dislike the 'clashing' of styles between tech and college, I go to Reed in portland right now and we have modern dorms and other buildings (like our Performing Arts Building) that look super modern, right across from the oldest buildings on campus, it just is a sign of development over time.

For the college, the asset reminds me of the "Old Main" building of Texas State University (my alma mater). It was originally a teaching and agriculture college when it was first established in 1899. One of Texas State's prominent alumnus was President Lyndon B. Johnson. If you go with this idea, you could call in the LBJ Teaching School, or something to that effect. Also in real life, this building also sits at the top of as hill. :)

I think a fire watch tower would be cool on the campus. Back when I attended CCAD they had a tower elevator built separate to give an old warehouse turned art studio handicap access to the top floors. If I had a break I would stand up there and look over Columbus. Very peaceful in a busy place.

I know that in universities, there's often a cafe area with a bunch of little shops for students to buy food and/or work. I think that could be nice especially since there's some decent open space around the campus.

College campuses are one of the coolest things to build in any city builder, because they're almost a whole district unto themselves, they define everything around them, and they tend to be more unique and stylistically interesting than most neighborhoods.

Private university campuses in the US often have a diverse range of architectural styles if they’ve been around for any length of time. I grew up near and attended Syracuse University and the campus is a crazy mix of mid-century modern, Georgian/renaissance/romanesque revival, brutalist (Byrd Library FTW!) and recent, hyper modern buildings. Using that example I’d designate your oldest buildings as belonging to the most venerable departments. The standard college building looks a lot like the Hall of Languages at SU which is one of the oldest buildings on campus and houses the oldest department, liberal arts.
