That is the best explanation of the BIOS that I have ever heard. You are a star, buddy. Now I can confidently do something that I was scared to death of. You made it sound so simple. I'm going to play this video on my ipad while I'm working on the BIOS after I finish building the PC. I'm actually doing a build with some parts I have lying around and I bought an ASUS P8Z77V-LX motherboard with an Intel i5-2400 I took out of a second hand Dell Vostro computer.

The old monitor should still work. If the motherboard has integrated GPU then connect the monitor to it and it should access BIOS. Motherboards will often time default to the internal GPU even though a dedicated GPU is connected. You may also want to check the monitor is set to the correct input source. If you're using any kind cable adapter, be sure it is connected properly.

my motherboard and cpu are new. i'm using old usb wired keyboard and mouse from my old dell computer. when i start the computer, i can enter bios. the keyboard and mouse are usable there. but when i try to install windows 7 from cd i have problem. on bios settings: boot option 1 and 2 are DVD and the 3rd option is SSD. when the computer starts, my windows 7 cd is ready to install but it needs my mouse command to click on further to install it. but my mouse and keyboard don't work here. my motherboard has mostly usb 3.0 and few usb 2.0. i ve put my wired usb mouse and keyboard on usb 2.0 , tried with usb 3.0 too. but the problem is the same. it doesn't take my command, when the win cd starts. the monitor is showing the window installation window and wants my command with clicking on it. but i can't do anything. on BIOS settings: USB Support is Full Initial. Legacy USB Support is enabled XHCI Hand off Enabled EHCI Hand off Enabled Port 60/64 Emulation Disabled USB Mass Storage Driver Support Enabled Above 4G Decoding Disabled my bios is actual, it doesn't need to be updated. have checked about it. on my motherboard is no red led's blinking ...everything works but not my usb wired keyboard and mouse. thank you for reading. have a good day

You need to enable Port 60/64 Emulation in BIOS. That's why the mouse and keyboard is not working.

try removing your gpu and boot again. if that doesn't work try booting up with 1 ram stick. and try taking off the cmos battery on the motherboard and wait for a while and then put i back in and boot it up. i hope this works for you. i had the same problem.

The setup between BIOS and UEFI aren't that different. The only things that separate the two is that UEFI Supports booting from GPT formatted drives, Remote diagnostics and repair, runs Pre-boot applications, has 32 and 64 bit mode to allow Pre-boot apps access to all System memory, Built-in Hardware Drivers for Pre-boot apps to access CPU, Memory, etc., Replaced the VGA protocol with GOP to reduce Hardware dependencies, Has Boot Manager Built-in to eliminate the need for a boot sector, UEFI can now auto detect OS loaders, CSM support for legacy hardware (it was later removed), and supports Secure boot to prevent malware from changing drivers and OS loaders to load viruses. So, How is setting up UEFI different from BIOS other than setting up Secure Boot which requires a TPM to be installed?
