Grandad was a professional welder and farmer. Watched him doing many welding repairs on the farm, and you look just like him kneeling down on the ground and welding away. I'm convinced the man had kneecaps made of iron. Great video!

I had the same problem with my forge. Much of the smoke came back. After some research I realized that obviously, if the hot smoke rises, it must displace another amount of ambient air because on the surface of the planet there is no vacuum.. In this process, the air that replaces what was displaced by the heat must come only through the "mouth" of the forge, so the inlet port must be the same diameter as the outlet. In this way the vacuum causes only air to enter the chimney and there is no possibility of returning smoke. In this project, there is a much larger inlet of ambient air than the outlet... so the smoke comes back.

Great video and lots of info, thank you for sharing. Love the idea on your Thor. I've had a similar idea I wanted to try.

Hello Cy. I am overwhelmed that you actually did name your electric forge hammer "Thor". It fits perfectly. I love the color scheme Red & Black. Reminds me of old fire trucks. Okay now you need a plaque over the door of the blacksmith shop to read "Cys Metal Wonders". Okay here you go. "Logi" In Norse mythology, Logi, Loge (Old Norse "fire") this is the new name for your Side Blast Forge. Logi is pounced "Low-gee" as far as I can find. I don't know sounds pretty good to me "Thor & Logi" Lol.

also it would be helpful to go up with the stack 5 feet and then out the side...you would get better draft...

Make your flue go up instead of at an immediate right angle, it'll work a lot better. I'll be making pretty much this forge, great job and thanks for sharing!

You might try to add some height to your stack. 6 feet is a big difference, and small hose with that blower may be making the air come out of that pipe a bit kinked. Try some throttling before too much else (on startup). That said, that was nice layout and fit up, nice to see some competent fab work. Good luck. P.S. Did you have a damper? If you have 10' or 12' vertical that should be plenty.

Hey if you add a T to your air line and into your flu. You'll be able to cause a better natural draft that way less of the CO will be in the space it. Will help the air pull as well. Nice design. For sure.

Make sure the air is facing toward the out end of the flu as well.. because youll do the exact opposite

You may want to add on a low side area on the forge so you can soak some of your coal in water. Most of these forges had an low area for water to keep your coal wet.

Something is saw someone do that you could try was adding in a 2" metal pipe and hooking it to a shop vac and use it as a blower to heat it up more but you could use a hair dryer or something just an idea

Instead of sand, what about compacting clay? also the top of your flu outside has to be 3 feet higher than any point of the roof that's within ten lateral feet of the flu, otherwise, when you have a wind blowing, it'll force the smoke back down the flu.

That hammer doesn't "hit" very hard at all. It almost looks like it stops before it gets to the metal.

If you watch the cam on the back you will see that it actually hits then pushes down for a moment (tenths of a second) So not only does it hit hard it exerts pressure kind of like a press for a moment. I have actually had to shorten the link because it was hitting so hard it loosened the entire motor mount.
