Your work is admirable ! What tape did you use ? I used doubled side tape but the glue is alway gummed up and the thread is broken all the time (too much tension due to the glue I guess).

I'm largely using Angel Crafts brand double-sided tape. I'd suggest looking at using a different thread. I use a bonded polyester thread from Thread Exchange. When I tried using a bonded nylon instead, I had the thread breaking often when sewing on tape like you described. These days, I try to rely on hot-tacking more than taping, but still use tape often.

I liked that you showed that you don't need any fancy lightboxes or special equipment to make a kite! Thanks for sharing!

What I use to repair or replace the shock or bungee cords on my stunt kite is a motorcycle cargo net. I simply untie the cord and cut it to size.

Only just found this video almost a year after you posted it. WOW ! this is an epic piece of work, the pattern is so complex it must have taken days to do each stage, but the results speak for themselves, what a marvelous kite, you must be proud of your achievement, well done.

Looks awsome.... So you use doudle sided tape ? Doens`t the needle get very sticky ?
@WattyRev
4 жыл бұрын
Yea, I use double sided tape fairly often, though I try to limit my use when I can now days. The needle can get a bit sticky from it which can be very troublesome depending on the thread that you are using. I use a bonded polyester thread from threadexchange, and I rarely have issues. When I've tried other threads, the thread breaks frequently and have lots of problems when the double sided tape is involved. It's also easier if the double sided tape is fully sandwiched between materials. Because of this, I now tend to put an extra black layer on the back side of seems involving mesh so that I'm not just sewing through the mesh onto the tape. That seems to help and makes it look a bit nicer in the end too.

This probably took around 16-20 hours I would guess

Whatever rods I had laying around, probably Rev 3 wrap rods or something comparable. The sail is made to the usual Rev 1.5 size, so rods are easy to come by.

Hey I don’t think you will even see this but I was wondering what the dimensions of the sides and poles because I want to make a kite like this instead of spend 100$ to buy it.
@WattyRev

This kite is a typical 1.5-sized quad line kite. I used an old kite that I already had to be the basis of my dimensions, and I've tweaked my dimensions as needed since then. The rods are all the same length: 31 inches. That makes the kite 63 inches wide (3 rods for the leading edge), and a little less than 31 inches tall (because the vertical rods come down at an angle)
