4 years ago I built my son a GRP kayak in 3 sections that he can keep in a cupboard in his university lodgings.

Nicely built and filmed. I like how the bulkheads are used both in layup and finished product. I built a pygmy osprey last year using tape and glue methods like you used. Happy paddling.

Very nice. But what was the point of making it sectional if transported as whole? Maybe for storage? For me, would be the transportation part with a sedan car without a roof rack would be beneficial to have sectional and quick assembly solution.

That's a fair question. The main reason was for storage. I don't live in the house where this was filmed and have to use a pretty small elevator to get the boat in-and-out of its final home (i.e., no garage or freight elevator). I've also found that the sectional is very convenient for car-topping when going out solo. I will often strap it to the roof in pieces and put it together at the launch point so that it's much more manageable to get on-and-off the roof without help.

Is this something a person buys in pieces like that or did you cut them all out from plans? If so where ?

Either way is possible. In this case the panels were pre-cut, but the same kit can be built directly from plans if you have the right tools and materials. CLC is one company that sells resources for both options: www.clcboats.com/

sorry if i missed this in the video but how much does it weigh?

It's just over 50lb (23kg). I think that more experienced builders can keep that weight well under 50lb though. I probably used more fillet material and glass than was really needed.

It's great! I am now making the first in my life and the most primitive sit on top kayak from foam and fiberglass. And even with it there are many difficulties. What you did is top notch.

Good question. I didn't track actual hours, but it was about a 4-5 month effort working a solid couple of days every-other-weekend.

Chesapeake Light Craft (clcboats) doesn't appear to offer plans for the sectional version, but they do for several other variations of their Shearwater kayaks.

I want to build one myself someday. Been eying CLC shearwater for a while now. Thanks for sharing.
