Did you give thought to the thermal mass of the houses? I get that SIPS is great for insulation and air tightness but such light structures have very little thermal mass. The building can heat up and cool down too quickly for comfort. Is this something that was considered or accommodated?
@9706694895
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, yes, we did. The importance of thickness and thermal mass is a key in developing opportunities for including significant thermal mass in lightweight construction. A number of systems have been recently developed that demonstrate that although external walls can be of super-insulated timber frame type, internal finishes including floors, ceilings and partition walls can provide sufficiently high thermal mass without resorting to masonry construction. With this in mind, we specified internal materials with high thermal mass effectiveness. This includes a gypsum based Anhydrite Screed throughout the ground and first floors. Gypsum has a good specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity making it a great internal product for the floor and of course the walls are clad in plasterboards consisting of mainly gypsum. Together they help to control the issues low thermal mass external walls can present primarily through solar gain when using a substantial amount of glass. We also paid particular attention to how the houses were positioned and the use of extrerior shading to mitigate the effects of over-heating through solar gain (not a huge problem in England, but still worth thinking about). The use of triple glazing also reduces soloar gain by about 10% compared with double glazing. Finally, the use of an MVHR system helps by circulating and exchanging the air and with a summer stop option can even provide moderate cooling during warmer months by exchanging warm air effected by solar gain with new cooler air from outside.

Hi Regina, as far as I believe making houses out of wood spans all climates. In the UK we have a bit of everything and then some, but there are examples of people building them in Arizona desserts and out in the Alaskan wilderness, so I think the concept works just about anywhere. @@9706694895 I have found that many of the super wealthy build houses in the Hamptons in Long Island, New York directly on the beach. If a hurricane happens to destroy their beach front house, and the assessment has increased, they end up collecting more in insurance than they initially paid for the house. Many are actually paid just to build there. In the end, construction workers, clean up crews and the owners are all happy. Super star Billy Joel is one of the people who admitted this. It’s a racket, something the normal middle class person cannot afford. Perhaps we’re better off.

Hi Juliet, I didn't notice your question, apologies! Whenever possible, the idea is to use primarily timber glu-lams for the structural elements in a SIPs build whenever possible to pick up the larger loads. Because of our large glazed, two-story sections, we needed to use a couple of steel portal frames as the spans between load bearing walls, was too great. Also, there were other elements that require additional strength like wind bracing to the glazing which was incorporated in the steel frame and hidden behind the transomes of the windows. The rest of the steel structure was hidden in a false timber wall as we did not want to see the structure. There are no hard and fast rules for column width or span for these frames, your engineer in conjunction with the SIPs designer and engineer will come up with the best solution for your needs (our design focused on visibility and eliminating cold bridging so it might be different for your build and therefore require a different solution). Hope this was some help. :-)

Building techniques and methods is from America and the bouquet are quite old and old-fashioned and not up to code like Europeans. Even Mike Rinsinger who works all over America and into Canada gets ideas from Europe more. There are quite some exceptions. Only the branch is quite conservative and outdated entirely just like here in the Netherlands. The Germans putting all their efforts into heat pumps which is also a loss of energy because the most houses cannot cope with that kind of low efficient energy. The structural and bases of a low cost house is extensive insulation and a close envelope and not with wood because you get always struggles with wood but more sustainable materials like a combination of breathing constructions with wood straw and cob. These billing methods withstand several hundreds of years are extremely cheap to build but costs of a lot of labor. The labor is always found like the Earth ships to people who like to learn to build from start to begin which help you for free or family and friends which come over for a week or a weekend to help. Giving directions and supervising the works to get the plumbers and electricians in as soon as possible and back in when it’s need to be finished is the greatest thing to do. I just technology in windows is a bigger or wider distance from the two glass panels in front and back and in between layers of pets for leach which reduce used four times the energy for four times in normal HR class.

We are from southern NY, in Westchester County, just north of New York City.Dad passed 30 years ago now. He was so proud of that house. Dad worked for the New York Central Railroad and could only work on the house on weekends or during his vacation in the summer. He did all of the cement block work himself as well as most of the brick work. But the framing and insulation, he made every bit of it himself. My grandfather thought he was crazy as I recall. After all, who builds house walls 15 miles away from the site in grandpa’s driveway? My dad did and the house is still there today. Cost my dad $20,000 to build back then. It was sold in ‘05 after my mother passed for $529,000.00. You can message me at Susan Yasinsky through messenger. I’ll send you the address of my childhood home, it’s the brick ranch. @@MarkKnightFilms I will stick around. It was due to my ambitious father that I studied architecture. Can’t get enough of it. My father actually grew up in Hell’s Kitchen in Manhattan, when it was Hell to live there. He fought in the Pacific during WWII. When he decided he wanted to build, the GI bill helped and the rest he borrowed from the bank. I heard the story all my life. Took 4 years for us to move in. That was 1960. I think that’s pretty fast for a mostly one man job. He was just so full of excitement that it was more like fun to him. That house eventually became a home for 7 children and my parents. I have some pics of the inside when we were in the process of selling it. Also have an older pic before the breezeway and garage were added. I have to search for that though. I’ll try.

Are sips prone to condensation?
@9706694895
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Heather, I have found that the biggest contributors to condensation are inadequate air flow in combination with cold bridging. SIPs creates a continuous envelope of insulation, with very few penetrations meaning cold bridging is minimal and very manageable. Our architect worked very hard to make sure that our steel portal frames, beams and columns were inside the envelope of SIPs. The other important aspect is proper air flow. This is why all our houses utilise an MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery) system to manage the constant input of clean air from outside, while extracting warm moist air from the inside. The need for these systems is not unique to SIPs but is increasingly a requirement of all building methods because of the increased air tightness of modern homes. Hope that helps. Happy to discuss over the phone in more detail if required.
