I built a banty in 2003 C-ITV. I loved it. I changed the main gear to be very similar to the sky pup for a 5ft 6in wide stance. Unfortunately with the 277 Rotax I did not have enough range to go to the nearest town and back without having to land. I should have found a 4stroke engine instead. For better range. Cheers

The Rotax 277 did the job. For range, l added an extra fuel tank

I’ve been considering which ultralight to build for months. Finally ordered the Banty plans after viewing your video. Thanks for making it.

Wow, that’s great. I didn’t even know you could still order those plans over 25 years later. Is Mike Kimbrel and butterfly areo still going? I’m glad you were able to decide. It’s a great airplane and an absolute pleasure to fly. It handles so easily being very stable with no nasty tendencies. I found the plans very complete and it was a relatively easy build. I made a few modifications which I can tell you about if you’re interested. Thanks for your comment. Glad to have helped inspire you. BTW I still have the airplane in a hanger. The skin is tight and it appears to be in good shape, but I haven’t flown it in many years now. All the best, Glen

@@MacGyver0692 , thought I responded earlier but don’t see it here. Anyways, thanks a lot for your response. It’s very encouraging to hear you so highly recommend the Banty, especially since I’ve yet to find any other Banty builder-pilots to speak with. I’d be very interested to learn more about the mods you made. I can send my email or phone number, if either works best for you. Also, I sent you a friend request on FB. Thanks for considering it, and thanks again for the video and response. Oh, and yes: Mike Kimbrel is still selling plans. $35! A great deal.

The Banty is known to be just a little too heavy to be a legal UL in the USA. What was the exact weight of yours and what engine were you using ? So glad you hung on to the photos and finally shared with us. Now two decades later, what became of the airplane ?

My bantys weight was 260lb. I did make certain changes that would have added to its weight. I used fir in the fus instead of Sitka. I put 1/8 marine ply instead of 1/16 aircraft ply on the forward fus because I had a sheet, although it is not terribly heavier than the 1/16. The main gear i built was heavier than the plans. Similar to the skypup. There was a fan on my Rotax 277 that I pondered taking off that if I remember correctly had some weight to it. I did not do this. I suspect the banty could be built to stay under 254lb if you follow the plans. As a Canadian our gross weight for a basic ultralight is 1150 bl . There we have the American definition beat although we must have 10 hrs of training. The banty was a fun experience. It was a very stable easy too fly airplane. If you build one you will enjoy it

Banty’s usually do come in under weight. They are among the few wood and fabric ultralights that can pull it off.

The engine is the Rotax 277 with a gear reduction. The plane is in a hanger at the airport. It has been sitting for years but looks good and l still turn the engine periodically to keep it for seizing . I believe the empty weight was 500 pounds and yes in the US it did not meet the weight restriction. Thanks for your comment

A lifetime experience ❤️ I'm 24 year's old & belong from a third-world country. I've also the same dream. Passion for building & flying an aircraft. I don’t know am I gonna make it real within my lifetime or not, but seeing other folks living their dream is also breathtaking. Thanks for sharing this with us Glen

Yes I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to build my dreams. The Banty ultralight was the cheapest option for me. Built from scratch with basic materials made it affordable. Your next best option is to build flying models from scratch with little or no money. I appreciate your comment, all the best👍🏻

@@MacGyver0692 You ment model aircraft right? I've already have some. I'm completing my bachelor in Aircraft maintenance engineering. I hope the day will come when I'll be able to fulfil my dream. I was thinking that f you can give me your social media account link or any way to talk to you & discuss more 🙂 I'm looking forward to talk to you. Thank you for your response Glen. It means a lot 🥰

Hi Kevin no I don't still have the banty. I live on Vancouver island. The terrain here is mountainous so my eyes were glued too my 277. It did not have the range to fly to the next town and return which could put me in a real situation. If I lived on the prairies I would still have it. The fella who purchased it flew over 7 miles of open ocean to Powell river. Unfortunately he let a friend fly it who stalled it after taking off and came straight down in 80ft fir trees. It came to rest 10ft from the ground. Destroyed the banty but the pilot other than minor scratches was unheart. Can't understand how he did this I held full up elevator to which the banty responded with the most gentle stall you can imagine. Very stable the banty can easily be flown with throttle and rudder for an entire flite with exception of take of and landing needing a little elevator. If you build one you will love it cheers

Yes I still have it in my hanger at the airport. It’s been sitting for years, but appears to be in good shape. I turn the motor over occasionally to make sure it doesn’t seize and the skin is still tight

Thats an awsome plane. Too bad it would not hold a 265lb 6'2" pilot! Lol. I love the way it can get as slow as it does for landing. I wonder if it handles anything like a 1947 7 AC Champ?
@MacGyver0692

Thanks for your comment. Yes, I think it would handle a lot like a champ. It would Fly slower and be less powered but otherwise being a Taildragger and conventional stick between the legs, feel the same.

I ordered the plans from Mike Kimbrel, butterfly arrow Back in 1992 the plans were $25. Typically, designers like to get paid for their plans. Otherwise I wouldn’t have a problem providing plans.
