I've just been making scale accurate icon images for on online RPG campaign, based on great high quality renders other people made. And Star Destroyers really complicate finding a good scale. With a Star Destroyer as a massive 1600 pixel image, the Millennium Falcon is only 38 pixels long, and starfighters become completely invisible. Make the starfighters big enough to be usable, and it's impossible to see a whole Star Destroyer even when you zoom out completely. These things are just stupendously huge.

I remember the old MPC kits from back in the day and I can't get over the level of accuracy and detail in these.
@ToeCutter0

Owen Egan Is MPC still around? I’ve bought a few Revell models recently, but these Bandai Star Wars kits represent a whole new level of detail. I just received the Executor & ISD kit from Bandai and the amount of detail on those molds is INSANE. The ISD in my kit is less than 4” long assembled, but includes a ludicrous degree of detail! Waiting on a new air compressor, it can’t get here soon enough.

Nicely done! I felt your paneling was just a bit conservative, but even so it looks GREAT finished. The lighting looks phenomenal on camera, but I’ve also heard quite a few other builders lament the different hues from the LEDs. They were also critical of how the hull fits over the battery compartment. That said, the 360* camera shots looked very accurate, reminiscent of the ISD I from Rogue One. Ironically, when I saw the tiny Falcon was included, I immediately wondered how it would look hanging off the back of the bridge from ESB!

Awesome job, much better than I could have ever done, looks movie quality. Only bummer about that kit from what I can tell is they didn't model the bridge from the outside; imo that should be a given on any model, its really the only interior shot of a star destroyer we ever get to see in the movies, and modeling that externally should be crucial for consistency, but that's just me nit picking at the kit itself, not your work as that is outstanding as always. Thank you for sharing.

@@modelchili Ah right on. That annoyed me in the movies as well, I remember as a kid pausing my VHS tape and trying to find a set of windows on the outside that resembled the interior haha. Another fine build Sam. The "greebling" (fine detailing) is often omitted on one or more faces of studio filming miniatures because it is so time consuming. Thus, there was no detail on the rear of the Alien Derelict in "Alien" or on the port side of the "USS Sulaco" in "Aliens". We are currently scratchbuilding new models of these for an exhibition and since they will be viewed from all angles we are having to try to get into the mind of the original designers to "fill in the blanks". I've built that lit Bandai kit of the Star Destroyer in your video and had the same problems with the "banana effect" (solved with hot water and a long stiff metal rod inside the hull), the "miscoloured LEDs" (substituted with the right colour) and the cumbersome switching (I hid a micoswitch in an inconspicuous posiition on the hull undeside). I was going to seal the model up but realised that it has to remain openable to change the batteries. Bandai definitely need to rethink their lighting arrangements!

This is great work and has galvanised me back into action to restart model building. Currently doing the Advanced TIE Fighter which is nice and simple but due to lockdown the only thing the model shop hasn't been able to send me is the TS-13 Tamiya Gloss Clear. I have however got the TS-80 Flat Clear. Is it ok to use flat clear before the decals and weathering instead of the gloss coat or should i just wait until the supplier gets some more stock? Keep up the good work.
@modelchili
4 жыл бұрын
Great to hear! Decals are best used on a gloss coat, this helps minimise air bubbles that get trapped underneath. I'd wait for the Gloss clear, otherwise the second best option would be to apply the decals straight onto the paint, then do a flat coat!

It's a bit of conundrum. It would be very easy to weather the hell out of these models, even the ISDs. But often in-universe it seems like a lot of the smaller ships see to have more and more weathering on them. Im guessing because the smaller ships fly into atmospheric conditions. And only the smaller Interdictor class is more commonly seen going planet side.

There is no one answer for airbrushes it depend what you want to do with it. I used double action Iwata gravity feeds most of the time for models, but have a single action that has fan head for all overs and glosses. Starting out I would get basic double action that has decent reviews. Don't spend a lot on your first one just learn how to use it first. Learn the feature that matter most to you they wont always be the same for everyone.

RE: why one side is more detailed, it's not so much they expected to shoot one side more than the other, in that way, it's more, as it's symetrical, if you needed to show the starboard side you'd film the port and mirror the footage. Allowed the model makers to concentrate their time much better. Not sure why they'd have the garbage hatch light up - it doesn't in TESB, and I can think of no reason why you might add that feature to a model. it wasn't clear; or maybe I just missed it, whether or not the tractor beam array could be mounted up (Devastator style) as well as down (Avenger style). If it could be mounted either way, and assuming there'd be the slightly different turrets, then you could have a reason why you got both the Tantive and the Falcon, since they don't get close to the same ISD. And intensify the forward firepower was the Executor, not the Avenger ;-)

Hey there. I bought that LED kit myself when I was in Japan in September (didn't even knew this existed). Anyway, I wanted to assemble it these days, but I there is something that confuses me. There a two "C-Parts" molds with basically the same parts - lighted und unlighted versions parts in one box I assume. One mold transparent, one flat grey as the rest of the parts. I think the transparent parts are there to channel and guide the light from inside, right? Did you assume you @ModelChili Scale used those transparent parts and painted it prior to assembly? It's not clear from watching the video. Because in the end, all those transparent parts need to be painted from the outside anyway. Also, what I am "affraid" of most is the painting. "Affraid" because I don't have an airbrush tool at hand. And allthough I spraypainted models before with model colors spray, I fear using spray color out of cans may clog the fine lighting holes on the surface. Any tips for me?
@modelchili

I didn't use any of the transparent parts. My primer from a can didn't cover any of the lighting holes. Just remember to apply multiple thin coats.

Is Bandai's Star Destroyer more detailed than the one from Revel/Zvedzda?
@AvengerII
4 жыл бұрын
The general consensus is, "Yes." The other kit might be up to twice the length but Bandai outdid everyone else in detail. With the lighting kit, this model goes over the top but it also costs between $65-$80 without the lighting kit. I'm sure the model with the lighting kit costs more now since it was a limited edition run like the original 1/72 Millennium Falcon with the lighting kit is well over $400 now if you can find it. The scalping of the models goes on even as Disney and Hasbro can't sell new toys because they ticked off the fans with the last trilogy of films. If anything is selling now, it's tied into the Original Trilogy and even that's depressed saleswise. It's harder to find the Bandai kits in-store now. They're not restocking as much as they did before I've noticed. The last new kit I've seen is The Rise of Skywalker Millennium Falcon and that's just a re-issue with the right radar dish this time. Bandai should have just gone ahead and given us Classic Trilogy figures of Han, Chewie, Luke, Leia, and Threepio to fill the cockpit. Nobody's enthusiastic for the Disney characters.
@modelchili

The Revell/Zvezda one looks like it has mostly made up detail that isn't accurate. The Bandai one is more detailed and based on the studio model so wins in that department. The only advantage to the Revell one is its size.

I hope to use a metal tube to support it (the stand) and run cables inside to the lights connecting to the fibre optics. It's going to be difficult as I have never lit a model before. nice build up of what should have been a better kit given the amount of research went into it. Your not alone in regards to the warped hull, PITA lighting system and mismatched LED's as numerous people have all reported the same issues. You could always cover the bridge LED in clear yellow to help change the colour more. I've seen some guys cover a few windows with clear PVA and then tint them orange/red to break up the monotony of the single colour white It's half the reason why I haven't bothered to buy one. That and it's also too small for me - especially for the price. Still, if space is an issue, then this would be a good option. Way better than the old MPC offering for sure I'm currently building and detailing the bigger Zvezda kit which is also not without its own "issues". Out of the 2, I prefer the Zvezda over the Bandai for sheer enjoyment but I'd love to have Bandai's engineering incorporated into the Zvezda. Can't have everything I guess Thanks for sharing this

Sometimes when I look at these kits and see all the holes in the hull where you're supposed to glue in insert pieces, I can't help thinking that they're just artificially increasing the parts count to make modelers feel like they're getting their money's worth. For a lot of them, there's really no reason that they couldn't have been molded right into the main piece. I'm not saying that the model should just be a few big pieces that you glue together, but separate parts should make sense in their placement.

Um... where are the bridge windows? They should be just above the big square grate thing.

Do you thin the Model air colors before brush painting them? Any specific ratios to brush paint if they need to be thinned?

Sam, I love your videos so much. I am very thankful that you make these, as I want to start modelling again soon, as soon as I can acquire all of the necessary means. You have so many videos of models that I want to make (and have watched several times lol) and I've already learned so much from you. I can't wait to see what you do next. Keep on keeping on brother! :)

I have this fine looking kit on the back burner. I think I`ll pass on the lighting though. Even in film the lights are left off anyway, for the most part, simply because they would melt the model. I think the key when it comes to painting is how we perceive the model to be. Unless you have worked in film, the actual models look completely different than they do in Cinema. Some look horrible, some look fantastic. Cheers.

This is absolutely beautiful. You did a remarkable job ! Compared to this model, the Revell one from the '90s looks totally amateurish. Too bad, the LED model costs three times as much as the "basic" one. Question : I read a commentary on Amazon claiming that Bandai's AT-AT model was only 70mm long, not 70cm. Is this true ?

Thank you! I've not made the AT-AT, but it won't be 70cm long, it's only 1/144 scale. 70mm sounds a bit short though.

Personally I think that if you used much more wash on model like that you'd loose the sense of scale for the model, since an ISD is suppose to be huge (about a mile long) so details shouldn't be too clear.

Could this work well as a display piece without paint?
