@@RCCAD2VR Oh yeah, in the 70s it was very advanced at the time, in design, construction, and sound. It is my opinion as an aerospace engineer. Lockheed has always built the most technologically advanced aircraft available. Unfortunately, they've never figured out how to make money doing so. And Lockheed should design them, Boeing should build them, and Douglas should market them. Sorry to go on so long. With respect to your beautiful model, take care of the weight of the tail, you can even design the ductwork, smaller for a smaller engine, it has always been like that. the wing motors had more thrust than the rear engine.. regards

I hope you cover the stabilator in carbon fibre as it will take inmense loads. I am a bit worried about being only one servo for the whole stabilator, ever if it is a monster of a servo. I take for granted you will put three engines on it (as it should be) but ducties or real power turbines 😎😎😎? Anyway, good luck with it and I am looking forward to the next episode.

😃 Thanks for being patient. It's been a bit of a rough go, but getting back on track and have made much more progress. The wings are pretty much done, I just need to get the video made for it. The total time to design and build this section took just shy of 2 months. Many, Many tests and prototype parts were needed to get to this point. The molds alone took 13 days to 3D print and prepare for casting. I've considered dual servos for the stab but didn't want to add extra weight in an all ready weighty area. The BLS5405H should be more than up to the job. Mine will be EDF powered, however, several buyers said they will be going with turbines. Still debating on the final covering for the stabs, CF is a good option. Thanks for watching!

I have about 200 questions.... amazing work! Good te see you wearing air filters though, the materials today are very nice, but a devil to work with. One question, I'll leave the rest.. Did you do weight estimated in CAD? and did they influence your choice of materials?
@RCCAD2VR
Жыл бұрын
Yup, breathing protection is a must when working with CF. I couldn't find a proper material profile for birch ply, so getting a weight estimate in CAD was not going to be reliable. The material choices boil down to strength, weight, and purpose. Some parts are better made from Nylon Carbon Fiber composite due to the specialized shapes, others the wood. The 3D printed parts (Black material) is much stronger and lighter than the ply and offers made for purpose parts. I could have gone with Fiberglass for the duct and rudder, but decided to go with the lighter CF option instead. 3x-4x more expensive, but the moment of the parts is so far aft, that the small weight reduction makes a significant different for CG.

@@RCCAD2VR Makes sense. (For my design, a CL415, I designed the floats as CF, but was shocked to discover that a balsa solution was actually lighter. I have not started building yet .... sigh)

I am fascinated by your "Old School" construction technique, what advantage does it offer you over the carbon fibre shell system used by RC Ramy?
@RCCAD2VR
Жыл бұрын
Well isn't that a loaded question 😆😆😆 It all depends on what you see as advantages. From a builder's perspective they are obviously vastly different methods, each catering to a builders preference, requirements, capabilities, tools, accessibility to equipment, and ultimately what brings them satisfaction. From a pilots perspective the CF shell, in general, makes for a more forgiving flying experience since it's easier to keep the weight down, but that can also detract from the "scale looking" flight characteristics, though not always the case. It also can boil down to build priority. I'm developing a kit so that people can buy and assemble the model themselves with glue, sandpaper, screw drivers, epoxy, fiberglass (or Carbon Fiber) and paint. Which are all very accessible and easy to work with. Ramy builds planes for himself and perhaps others. He creates very large molds which take days and weeks to 3D print and a very long time to post process and prepare for casting. Not everyone has the ability to work with CAD to create the models and them mold forms from those models for 3D printing. For faster builds, Ramy's method lends itself to production more quickly and tends to be less laborious. For the more scratch inclined builder, the wooden method is about the experience of working with your hands and being intimately involved in the smallest of details at every stage. Neither is necessarily better than the other, they are just different and cater to a different types of builders and/or pilots. In the end they both fly, they're both fun, and people love to see them in the air.

WOW your videos and the build are just up amazing, I don’t know anyone else who does this like you, but I have a quick question, what powerful enough Engines are you gonna use to lift this thing in the air? Are the engines gonna be custom made

Awww Yeah! Thank you, happy to read you enjoyed this video so much! The plan is to run this plane on 3 EDFs (Not custom made). Which ones are yet to be determined. I need to get sense of weight before making the selection. I'll be sharing that in an upcoming video as soon as it's been decided.

Great channel and great series, especially Fusion 360 classes! Few suggestions for your kit, if I may: - if you make cockpit part PLA shell without cutouts for windows (you can only recess it a bit, and leave it to modeller to cut it out - hot scalpel is enough for that kind of job) you won't need any support while 3D printing it. Also, even though it's kind a hard to estimate from the video, the shell seems to thick 2-3 mm maybe? That's a lot of plastic and a lot of weight. - I don's see the need for carbon fiber duct for middle engine (functional or not). Lot of work, and maybe lot of weight (depending on the amount of epoxy used). I suggest 0.4 or 0.6 mm LW PLA part. That duct does not need lot of strength, especially considering it is supoprted by aft fuselage formers along entire length - stabillizer ball bearings seems excessive - 15-20 mm outer diameter? Aditional weight in the back where you don't want it. - flaps/slats printed guides - seem flimsy - suggest laser cut it from carbon plate or pertinax or something of that kind. I make these suggestions in good fate and as a guy who over the last 20+ years built (and crashed - lol) dozens of RC models and have some experience with RC flying. Best of luck!
@kemc77

Hi, nice work indeed, one question, do you think that stabilator is strong enough? I mean, a longer spar from left to right ( carbon rod) covering 2/3 of the stabilator would be in my opinion a stronger solution looking at the final result dimension. Very very nice videos btw
@RCCAD2VR
Жыл бұрын
Yup, You are correct! 😃 After building this section and testing it I have changed the design of the entire exterior mounting components. The 3D Printed plate is plenty strong, but had some flex in it, which is really bad. It's now all wood construction built into the frame with a locking plate for the exterior bearing to keep it from possibly falling out of the socket and to protect the bearings from debris and moisture. With the new design, The fuselage frame will snap before the mount breaks. Also the drive shaft is now aluminum, extends further into the stabilator and "bolted" through the shaft, root mount and center spar. A slight weight gain, but rock solid now.

Truly truly impressive, excited to see the future of this project! May I ask what will you use to cover the inner structure with? Also, I'm sure you've thought of this already, but perhaps consider a dust extraction system when you're cutting carbon fibre with a rotary tool? The respirator goes a long long way already, but having a vacuum nearby might just help pull away any dust that linger in the air and settle later.
@RCCAD2VR
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Shaun! The fuselage will be covered in balsa + fiberglass, and the wings will be either CF sheets formed to the ribs or fiberglass sheets. Have yet to decide which to use. Regarding the extraction... I have, since recording this video, purchased a vac to handle this :) Still building up all the toys and tools for the shop. Little by little.

I have actually made some adjustments to it and made a change in material to aluminum for the drive shafts. Plus there is a detail that didn't make it into the video with any detail, which is a guide rail that holds the leading part of the root to the mounting plate. Also the rotational range has been reduced. Many updates, as you know, its a lot of iteration and prototyping 😉

Everything looks good! The only thing I see that needs improvement is your vacuum bag process. You don't have any pleats in the edges of your bag. Plus the bag is way too small. In general the bag is usually double the size of the part. I'd check for delamination's in the creases of the part. Visually I could see some in the vid. Great work keep it up!
