The WordPress 5.8 updated released in July included new blocks for creating custom lists of posts.
If you've ever wanted to display a list like "3 most recent blog posts from a category" or "5 cake recipes" or "4 featured clients", you either had to find a plugin and learn how to adapt its display to your site or use a complex page builder theme.
Now, the ability to create custom lists of posts is baked right into the WordPress Block Editor. Using a Query Loop and Post Template blocks, you can build custom lists of posts using normal blocks to control the content and layout.
The new blocks are very useful, but they're a little complicated to set up, and they may not always be the best choice for your site.
In this demo presentation, Clare will show how to set up a Query Block to display a list of posts, and how to control its layout with Post Template blocks. We'll also look at some alternatives for the same functionality available in plugins, and consider the performance of the various solutions.
