It is always pleasant to see more realistic sized consists at work and that APT is loving the long smooth curves as is the HST. I am a bit stuffed for space myself restricted to two paste tables and chose the Hornby Flying Scotsman trackmat for my initial build as it covers everything I want from a set with some good variation.

Wow, absolutely brilliant layout mate, thanks for sharing, very impressive carpentry skills with the build and the layout clearly has massive potential, will look forward to looking at this again as my own build will be using inclines. Thanks again and all the best, Paul

Looks like a good job using plywood ,I had the same idea in my loft but the cold and the heat put me off had to make a room up there to stabilise in but lost loads off space ,you can’t beat doing properly you’ve made a nice solid job with your baseboards,I can’t wait to see more I do like to see long trains ,I’m restricted to six coaches max but you’ve got so much room it’s lovely.

Thank you! Yeah I think it's my favourite. It's probably a bit too long for the layout now but I can't bring myself to take a couple of coaches out of IT!

Can I ask a question about your loft. Does it get too hot in summer, to the point it affects the track? I was tempted to do a loft railway, but friends said I need to insulate the rafters with foam blocks and instal a velox window for ventilation. That's a hefty investment. But see you seem to be running in the loft without either. Do you think insulation and ventilation are necessary if budgets allow?

Nice inclines and sidings , for someone who struggles to get time to do do a bit on a layout in a loft like myself ive just subbed great to class 55 Lima running smoothly Is the 33 a Lima too?
@WirenwoodModelRailway

Thank you! Yeah finding time is one of the most difficult things! Yes the Class 33 is a Lima too! The vast majority of the locos are old Lima and Hornby, with the exception of the 101, 37 and seldom seen Flying Scotsman. They came new, factory DCC ready, the rest I've converted myself.

Everything seems to be really carefully thought about. Have you considered finishing the walls? Also, is the roof insulated?

Thank you! I did carefully think about insulating the loft too but decided not to! I just didn't want to do the work, to be honest! The walls drive my Dad mad! He keeps grumbling about shoddy builders and wants to chip all that excess cement away!

@@WirenwoodModelRailway, :D. The only thing I would be worried about (that is, if you do not live in a climate with extreme temperatures) is dust; so I would, at the very least, spray some lacquer on the bricks and mortar and wood. You have too much great stuff (going on) there to allow dust to mess it.

I think the upper level is a bit too close to the rafters - I hope you don't bang your head!
@WirenwoodModelRailway

It is indeed millimetre close. The track up there isn't permanent yet and runs a bit too close which is why I've taken the pantographs off the APT!

@@WirenwoodModelRailway If you consider what you have built so far to be a test track, and you are prepared to make alterations, I think I would construct a sub-baseboard. Have the upper track on the main baseboard, giving you more clearance between the track and the rafters! Have the lower track in a cutting on the sub baseboard. I use the Hornby bridge R180 to get the measurement which is 8cm. If you lay the track directly on the bridge with greaseproof paper under the track, you can keep to this height. The lower the layout, the more room for your head! Remember, once your layout is finished, you will be seated as the operator. You can sit on a stool or a foot rest instead of a chair, giving yourself more headroom for cleaning the track and scenic detailing.

Ha I do bang my head now and again! I did put a lot of thought into the height and the height it's at was the best compromise for me. I actually like being stood - the points panels are right up at the ceiling level and I walk around with a tablet controlling the trains. I do see your point though, there's minimal clearance!
