This is a lovely build and has inspired me to try my hand at it. Can I ask what color you used to paint the blue-green Bussard collectors and nacelle fins? It looks like you did an amazing job matching that paint color to the overall decal color for the strongbacks and pylons. Wonderful as always!

It didn't personally hit me that way when the Enterprise was destroyed in The Search for Spock (having an entire sequence of explosions made it rather hilarious to me, especially with how the saucer shattered like an eggshell...), BUT, I can guess that it hit an entire generation or three of fans much like the death of Optimus Prime in 1986's The Transformers: The Movie. Which would've been seriously funky timing if any Transformers fans were also Star Trek fans, since The Voyage Home and thus the Enterprise-A also landed in 1986; (*checks the release dates of the two movies*) losing Optimus in August, only to turn around and get the Enterprise back in November.

Built this last year and it turned out pretty close to yours. Didn't have an airbrush so the deflector dish looks a little different, used a chrome blue to get close. Lost a piece during building so I bought a second kit to use for spare parts, now I'm tempted to build it out with battle damage. Nice.

Supposedly by the novels it was 18 months between movies and the Enterprise had a encounter with Klingons that led to damage. However in the comics the ship fought the Romulans which led to the battle damage. Great, great job on the model, mate. That was my first encounter of Star Trek in 1984 was this particular look of the Enterprise Saavvy!!!!

Maybe that battle damage on the starboard side was from the debris of the Genesis explosion hitting the Enterprise as she fled the scene. The other damage was by Khan.

There are a lot of people out there who love the refit and A versions of the Enterprise above all other types/class's yet no one has made a video game with the original series movie style of ships with appropriate weapon effects. Every game has to be with the new ships (starting with the D and going from there) and that constant phaser beam. Personally, I think a game developer could have a real winner on their hands if they make a video game featuring original series movie style ships. They will have to get a little creative when designing some class's of and race specific ships (we only got to see 4 federation - 5 if you count the B different from the Excelsior, 2 klingon and a tiny freighter that commander Kruge's bird destroyed). Cruisers, destroyers, frigates in the light, standard, heavy and battle sizes, not to mention all the one offs, prototypes and singular builds they could come up with. Maybe some fan feedback/input, made with talented developers who have a passion for game play and of the original movie series...it would be a hit but everyone in the business seems dead set on forgetting that era and moving on with tng stuff.

Great improvisation on the battle damage with incredible detail and depth. Always fun to see different approaches and build techniques. Back in the 80’s we use to apply battle damage to our AMT kits with Testors model glue and a number 2 pencil to create texture as it dried to look like the hull had been torn open and then painting black over it after the glue had dried. Quick, easy and fun.

@@amead78 A later systems overload, or cascade failure, caused by the damage inflicted during the on-screen attack? We know it's just ILM making a nicer shot, and also for plot reasons, it wouldn't make sense to 'retire' the Enterprise with the small amount of damage seen in TWOK...

Honestly this is probably my favorite iteration of the Enterprise, specifically with the battle damage. I think it gives the ship a lot of character and makes it feel that much more "real". Your work on the battle damage specifically came out really nice. That soot weathering powder added that extra bit of scoring or burnt appearance to the edges. Maybe its because I can't see it up close or in person but the aztecing decals still came out better here than on the Enterprise C, IMO. Overall, excellent work and I can't wait to see what your going to do next!

Far be it from me to give you (a professional) a tip but from experience I've found that white school glue thinned down like a wash will help decals stay down even in detailed areas and once dried any haze around or on top of the decal can be cleaned up with water and a cotton swab.

Absolutely fantastic work, the attention to detail you applied to this was incredible. I can see you have a real passion and imagination as well as a lot of patience. For what looked like just some tiny snap together kit you've transformed it into something that would look right at home in the actual film! The simulated damage and individual deck detailing looks amazingly acurate I pictured the scene and vision the inside decks breaching just from looking at it. I wonder if you considered or maybe have tried using a hot safety pin or something similar to make a few laser holes, or even drag it along to damage it more, i've seen this done to simulate burn damage and it can look pretty decent if done right, of course it can also be a bit OTT. Melting pin holes looks great for bullet holes, not sure how if it would be practical one this small scale though. This is the first video i've watched after just happening along, wiill definately watch more and look forward to you doing more. Very pleasing to watch and most theraputic with great commentary that often can be too loud in most videos, your voice is most relaxing. Thank you for taking the time and the effort to share this.

The flyby sequence you mentioned from Star Trek VI might have been one of these 1/537 Refit Enterprise kits! The way that model was lit made it look CG (back in 1991 when I first saw ST6) to me but it was a physical model and I think I have read/heard that they built up an AMT/ERTL kit for Star Trek VI just like they did other movies. The problem with the 8-ft Enterprise hero model was that it was difficult to stage and rotate around. In some instances, it was better to use a smaller model. We hear all this talk from people that these models should have been 20-ft long when the reality was that the existing large models were too heavy and impractical for many shots! That's why they built the 32-inch Millennium Falcon for The Empire Strikes Back and it became the main Falcon model for the last 2 films of the Original Trilogy. They had another 3-ft model built for The Motion Picture but it was stolen sometime before production began on Star Trek II. They still had the (vandalized) bridge sets and 8-ft model which were refurbished.

For the longest time Star Trek III was my favorite of the Trek films. It was the second one I ever saw (The first being TMP, the long cut.) Seeing the Enterprise Refit beaten to Hell like this made me very curious to see the prequel film, and of course I would go onto a few years later. Got it on VHS and wow. It's always interested me to know why the Enterprise looked so worse in Trek 3 than it did in Trrek 2. After all the work that went into applying battle damage to the filming model of the E had to be done very very delicately, as it had to be something they could remove if needs be. (It's almost like the E was wearing make up in a strange way.) Anyway, you did an incredible job capturing the Star Trek III look of the E. The old girls last hurrah. I can hear it now in my head "We have cleared space doors."

Gorgeous! Absolutely gorgeous! "The Search for Spock" ties with "The Wrath of Khan" as my favorite Star Trek film for its themes of friendship and loyalty. And the Enterprise was as much of a character as the people aboard her, even battered and crippled as she was, giving her all to the bitter end so that Spock may have another chance at life. I decided to omit the Aztec decals on mine and paint a lot of those details on that were represented by decal (I just think that looks better at this small a scale,) but seeing this video made me think that if I build this kit again, I should at least try the Aztec decals out (they did work out well for my 1:2500 scale Enterprise-D.) Also very clever how you achieved the battle damage! Again, I'm inspired! Thank you. :D LLAP

What a Beaut! Maybe you should try and do a Battle damaged NX-01 Enterprise! I'd like to see how you'd pull that off.

The newer kit that includes battle damage decals doesn't include Aztecs. You want to find the older version, like the one I have here, that one includes Aztecs.

@@modelchili ok cool that makes sense mine did come with battle damage decals . I switched to this version because as a kid I had atleast 5 enterprise models from undiscovered country with the shuttle and could never get the pylons and warp engines to stay up they always fell down so I figured this would be good and it is it’s a great model and it’s everything we need except the Aztec so now I know look for the older version. I love the refit enterprise definitely my favorite variant. Thanks for the tip I appreciate it man live long and prosper

Nicely done! It's funny though. Round 2 recently announced a re-release of this kit with battle damage decals! I hope you'll cover the soon to be released 1/1000 Discovery Enterprise. I've pre ordered mine.

I still have to build the 2500 scale Discovery and get the 2500 Disco-prise, which will match my 8 ship 2500 scale Enterprise set. I will use the Refit from the 3 ship Cadet Series and decals from Federation Models to build a 2500 scale Enterprise-A.

I've recently purchased this kit, i had the hardest time putting in the windows. Next it's the Aztecing ,, i wish it was peel & stick instead of moisten & slide off.

Looks great but personally, I liked it better with just the internal structure showing before adding the silver panel squares. Would be awesome if a sparking effect could somehow be added.

FOR THE WRATH OF KHAN AT ILM ... they used 4TH OF JULY 'SPARKLERS' touched on the Enterprise's paint for a millisecond. I looked at her up close and personal for about 10 minutes when they were making the film there. Amazing stuff. Make sure you practice on TEST PANELS FIRST-! (Then, for THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK ... it was a bit different phaser and photon hit locations) D.A.

Interesting, to see how they modified the model, I am finishing a 1/575 and the nacelle fastenings are very different. Easier to get right the first time, ha-ha! I would shudder at having to put all those "Aztec" decals on the model! Thanks!

That looks amazing! I've been trying to do something similar with digital models. I swear it's got to be easier with a physical one. You don't have to worry about a map being off and half the texture showing up on the opposite end of the ship. lol I wish I had your patience and steady hands though. Just amazing.

Great tutorial! Not sure if you can get it in the UK, but you may want to try Solvaset if you can get your hands on it. I find it to be more aggressive than the Micro set for recalcitrant decals. It really softens the decal so it has to be in its final position before you consider even putting a drop of solution on it.
