Hey, I might be able to help. Do you know the Kv of the motors you used? This situation definitely calls for the lowest KV motor you can find and at least a 4S battery. It will be far more efficient because you will be drawing far less amperage as well so everything will run cooler. You will sacrifice some runtime potentially by having to use a larger battery but due to the overall efficiency of the low KV and higher s rating it might actually run for a longer period of time. Anyway I'm about to buy your course and build one myself! Awesome work

seeing what speeds you reached with what kind of electronics actually makes me respect some old toy rc boat I have more. it was a old rc boat that was mostly a rc speedboat, but also could go underwater and stay just below the surface. that old thing had a basic brushed motor, based on how long it could work on a single battery it would use around 30 to 100 W in total for the entire boat. the motor just had a long axis on it which went trough a insane amount of grease just like vaseline to make it water tight, then at the end there was a small screw around 2 cm to 4 cm diameter or such. the speed on the water was 12km/h. underwater it would go at around half that speed, this was also largely due to the diving actually working by just flipping a rudder to steer a part of the motors force to force down. however while it also sends out quite some water it doesn't seem as extreme and powerfull as the motors you used, which is weird since according to that it should be slower instead of faster, but perhaps the streamlining of the boat. or perhaps the rpm might be part of it, or the general efficiency of the propellor and such matched to the speed or other thigns to reduce turbulence in the water since that boat seems to have a lot less turbulence than the motors you use in this video, the amount of water seems less extreme but much more in a straight beam. it would be interesting to see what happens. that boat is broken now, the motor and propellor still work however. but in my case I wanna try to figure out some kind of small energy efficient motors to use to strap on braces on the arm or on a surfboard or such, but probably more on something like arm braces so it is kind of like a submarine but then you are the submarine yourself, that would probably feel great, kind of like floating since you are as good as weightless yet still would move through the watter as if you are gliding.

Super job guys, and fun video. That's a pretty small ESC for such a motor, I would have expected a 50-60amp with a thick heatsink. I think you should test this again in a larger pool and you'll probably get over 4m/s. I can't help but feel that you need to make a proper fan duct to get that speed. As for the leatherback turtle, I think there's probably more to that speed. Like it needs to be in a current.
@CPSdrone
Жыл бұрын
The heat actually dissipates really fast without a heatsink. I think for anything more powerful I'd be just easier to somehow put ESCs outside the electronics pipe, in the water. A motor hub/duct would definitely improve the speed, but also the props weren't centered perfectly. You're right, leatherback turtles are suspicious, we need to race one. It needs some turtle-proofing though, so that neither the turtle or the drone gets hurt.
@Theeslickness
Жыл бұрын
@@CPSdrone I wonder if it is worth considering a prop with a built in duct housing. Like the ring around the prop. That does add weight, but not as much for marine props. It would hopefully reduce turbulence and cavitation.

Really beautiful video keep going! if you want to increase speed you need to improve hydrodynamics. Any protrusion (especially if of a small surface area) creates a large viscous drag (it is related to the Reynol number).Try to reduce the small surfaces and improve the hydrodynamics of the engines by adding cones.

We have a model building club here in town. They participate in boat racing competitions and they are using way smaller screws. Actually, what you should have done is meassure the voltage and current to figure out if your power is restricted by the battery or if your esc is at the limit. Then use a number of differen screws to optimize the setup. A static setup in a bathtub will only tell you so much.

If I've understood correctly, it is not in direct contact with water but inside that electronic tunnel. Make it waterproof by pouring epoxy on it, then take it out of that tunnel and take profit from that free best watercooling you will ever get. One easy fixe would be a bigger esc, as there are others able to handle 80A without overheating.

I have such an idea for a safety system against losing the drone due to entanglement of the cable. Hardware - Cable cutter, standard co2 cartridge connected to an inflatable balloon, e.g. made of latex, something like a condom. Soft is a simple instruction. If the drone has tangled the cable under water and it is impossible to get it out, the cable is cut and the balloon filled with co2 floats to the surface. Cutting the cable and opening the co2 tank requires strength, maybe a mechanism based on the action of a screw.

You should use a low KV motor, maybe 350 kv not your 1000kv. Overloading the 1000kv motor will waste a lot of energy. You probably need a smaller prop to allow motor to turn faster. You should have a meter to measure performance of motor, current, power etc. so you can optimize the setup. Crazy cut and try method may end up with burned parts.
