Personally i basically only use SMD diodes, but i like using a hybrid footprint for them, it sometimes even makes the routing easier because you can be on whichever layer to connect traces into the throughhole slots. Edit: Also when soldering, apply some solder into one of the pads on the sockets / smd diodes, and then you can just place the componen into place and apply heat to the pad again. Its way easier than putting the componen down and then soldering. Another edit: I've used painters tape in place of kapton tape with no problems, it might be easier to get your hands on if you need it ASAP

Oh yeah, I 100% prefer SMD diodes just for a beginner through-hole is easier :)

thanks for the tip with the kapton tape! too many times i've had solder go into the sockets 😵💫

Damn I wish I thought of that kapton tape trick when I made my board. I had to rip out all my pins and start from scratch. I am lucky I didn't lift any traces while trying to desolder the pins that had solder flow into the socket.

Been looking at the Wing for a while and this might be the tipping point! As an aside, how did you do the keypress overlay during the typing test at the end? Been having trouble finding one that has the same layout as the keyboard I'm using.

Monkeytype has an option where you can choose the layout you use.

I have a question i want make my custom macro pad and it will be my first project is it good to start with that project as beginner i did start making the model idea and i did want to know if its possible for a beginner to make macro pad ?
@joe_scotto

I always recommend starting small with something like a macro pad so that’s a great idea :)

How important is alignment of the hotswap sockets with regards to ensuring the switches/keycaps each stay aligned and not twisted or crooked vs the ones around them?
@joe_scotto
3 ай бұрын
The socket itself handles it because it sits in the PCB. If you put them on upside down though you won’t be able to get the switch in the board.

Hi Joe, is that controller mounting the "Socket_Pins_2x12" in your updated footprint library? I'm just beginning a new macropad design and would love to have the controller fit lower like that. Great idea!!!
@joe_scotto

Yeah, you can find them under the "ScottoKeebs_Scotto" footprint library and they're labeled "Socket_Pins_2x12"

I’m toying around with something I’m calling “halfwired” and might do the ScottoLong as one of the firsts.

So this is just corne but not split? Kinda loses the idea behind the split keyboards, but it's convenient for someone who wants to try something not staggering still keeping the solid keyboard
@joe_scotto

It’s a split-monoblock. It is easier to transport because it’s only one thing to bring. The layout is also different.

Hey im getting into keyboard stuff and im wondering, would it not be possible to make a split ergo keyboard but only using 1 microcontroller? i dont exactly see why not as maybe i could just use some usb or connector or whatever, but perhaps you have some ideas?

Yeah, you just need a cable with enough lines to pass the matrix: kzitem.info/news/bejne/z49rt6Z6q3mIdKw

Hi Joe. Do you have any tips on how to make 3d printed plate/case feel more solid? I've recently almost exactly the same corne keyboards. hotswappable PCB + plate. While one was an original FR4 plate vs 3d printed one. And the 3d printed one feels soo mushy as compared to the original FR4 one.
@joe_scotto
3 ай бұрын
You can print stuff solid but FR4 will still be more stiff as it’s basically fiberglass.

nice... hmm i thought i saw on some other boards they use a dongle for bluetooth...do you not have to do that anymore?...also is switching bluetooth connections doable through the keys?
@joe_scotto
3 ай бұрын
I’m using a nice!nano which is just regular Bluetooth so no dongle needed. You can switch profiles on the bluetooth settings layer. It has 5 different profiles you can set it to for different devices.

can I use mill max socket instead of kailh hotswap socket?
@joe_scotto
3 ай бұрын
Not on this board because the holes are large to accommodate the sockets. To my knowledge only solder boards are compatible with mill max. That said, the kit comes with the sockets so you don’t have to buy them separate.

What do you do with CTRL ALT and Windows key?
@joe_scotto

They’re on the thumb buttons. Alt is holding on the first left thumb, holding the second left thumb is CTRL. Windows key is a triple tap of the left thumb.

Allows more options for the controller and keeps costs down.
