The 'USS Constellation' was the first American ship to engage in war. She was launched on the 7th September 1797 in Baltimore and served for 56 years. The Constellation was originally built to provide protection of US ships in the Quasi-War with France and to defeat Barbary pirates. Later she served in South America, the Mediterranean, China and Hawaii. In the 1840s she circumnavigated the world.
The USS Constellation was 50 metres long and 12 metres wide. As a frigate with three masts, she could carry 17 sails. For armament she carried up to 28 long cannons and 20 cannonades. She had four decks and a complement of 340 officers and enlisted seamen.
The USS Constellation was rebuilt in 1853 as a sloop of war and was decommissioned in 1933, but recommissioned throughout WW2. She was restored in the 1990s and is now a National Historic Landmark in Baltimore.
This model of the USS Constellation was built by Ross Callaghan of Paraparaumu, New Zealand, in 2017. It was made from an Artesania Latina kit and took 6 months to build. The video shows all the steps in building the model and provides comments and things that were learnt along the way.
