This thing is a treasure, a real icon of American progress. And still going at 72, amazing. The kickass horn is the icing. What a great sound.

Wilfred Sykes, 678' long 70' beam, 9000 hp GE cross compound steam turbine as I recall? My father Felix K. Saari held various engine room posts up through Chief Engineer in the late 50's, 60's, 70's retiring in 1980 from the Inland Steel Company back when she had the beautiful red and silver accents. Dad had a great friendship with Dudley Paquette, captain. Though necessary, dad was sad that her looks suffered so when the Sykes was converted to a self unloader. Thanks for the memories:)

The Wilfred Sykes was commissioned the same year that I was born, unreal SHE IS STILL DOING HER JOB. A good looking vessel with a lovely sounding horn. But Paul can you explain to me what REALLY POWERS this vessel. I thought I heard the announcer say “steam turbine Diesel engine, I don’t think those two work together. Another great video.

Is her whistle alot like the alpena ship where steam comes out? Or is it more of a modern air horn?
