Bull elephants are known to be territorial animals and can fiercely defend their territory against other males. This territoriality is most evident during the musth period, which is a hormonal cycle that occurs in male elephants. During musth, bulls experience a surge in testosterone levels, which leads to increased aggression, restlessness, and a strong desire to mate. They mark their territory with urine, feces, and glandular secretions, which serve as a warning to other males to stay away. Bull elephants will also engage in physical displays of dominance, such as trumpeting loudly, flapping their ears, and engaging in mock charges. These displays are often enough to deter other males from entering their territory, but if necessary, they will engage in physical fights, which can be deadly. Once a bull elephant has established dominance over a territory, he can maintain it for several years and will only leave to search for food or to mate.
