This reminds me of our trip (in the other direction) in April 2019. The Hokkaidans(?) are so proud of their new Shinkansen that when you're on top of Mt Hakodate they have a sign, not showing you the mountains or sights, but the line of the Shinkansen track in the distance). Thanks for bringing back happy memories.

Oh that reminded me of how very much I hate travelling :) I live about as deep in the countryside as you can get in britain and the nearest town is a half-hour drive away. No matter just how pretty it is here (and it really is ) every single time I will end up thinking 'Will this interminable horror never end'. When I used to live near london I remember being surprised at just how warm everywhere was. It is possible that I just had especially mild winters since I was only there for about 3 years. Growing up on the top of a hill in wales the occasional winter would have the outdoor thermometer come close to -20C (although the 'official' weather show temps always seem to be considerably warmer or cooler than they are) I started sleeping with just a mattress on the floor and then (much later) a futon when I was at uni and my bed broke - I suddenly noticed just how enormous my room had become and never really wanted to go back to a real bed - despite how weird people thought it was :). It is supposedly good for the back and other things but I am always suspicious about health-benefit claims.
@cakeswithfaces
5 жыл бұрын
Wow, I didn't realise it got to -20C in the UK! (Apart from at the top of mountains in Scotland maybe!) The summers always seemed to be unbearably hot when I was growing up in London too. Yes I've heard that futons or sleeping on the floor is good for your back too! I enjoyed sleeping on a mattress on the floor when we were decorating the bedroom - I don't know why!! But I definitely agree with you about having more of a sense of space.

Other than Nikko I have not been "North/East" of Tokyo myself. As for the Shinkansen in the direction of Kyoto and such I just go to the station when I am at with my JR pass and book it locally for the first upcoming Shinkansen with room. I did go with Green card myself, I so-far never had trouble not being able to do it like that but it could be that the Green section is less booked most of the time. To be honest I was not even aware one could book it online and pick the ticket up at a selected station :) Was good to watch your video as usual. ^^

I was tempted by the Green car pass! Would you say it's worth it? It's only for JR East that you can reserve online at the moment, although I'm hoping they'll roll it out to the other areas of Japan too - it saves them time at the counter if you're just quickly picking up tickets.

How early would you recommend booking a JR bullet train ticket?
@cakeswithfaces
4 жыл бұрын
It depends if you'll be travelling at a busy time. At popular times like cherry blossom season, Golden Week or New Year, you might want to book earlier than other times. I've always found it ok reserving my seat the evening before I travelled (I was travelling with a JR Pass). When I went to the Sapporo Snow Festival, I knew it would be busy so I booked my seats as early as I could - I'm not sure if it was necessary to book that early, but if you know when you're going to travel then you might as well book it! :-) Hope that helps! Sounds like a great plan! With the Hayabusa (the bullet train from Tokyo to Hakodate - the fastest one!), you have to reserve seats. It doesn't cost anything, and on JR East you can make reservations online before you go. There are lots of people going to Hokkaido for the snow festival so as it's a busy time, it's I'd say it's a good idea to make reservations for the whole trip. Shin Hakodate is quite simple to transfer it (unlike some stations, which are giant mazes!) so I think it should be do-able. You'll just need to go upstairs, go to the ticket gates for the regular JR trains and go down to platform 2 for Sapporo. This video might help - it walks you through the entire route, and they manage it in about 4 minutes: kzitem.info/news/bejne/0J6vrY59oqVoaKAsi=IRUacYuCg986nzaz An update since they filmed it is that now you can use your JR Pass at the automatic ticket gates, so you don't have to go through the gate at the side any more.

Couple of questions. Have you ever researched getting to the Fox Village? How hard would it be to get to? Also did you visit the fortress in Hakodate? Not sure what you'd find in February, but late spring the cherry blossoms are supposed to be in fantastic. As for the weather, it could be worse, where I'm from, it's -40 in February. My Son and I really enjoy your videos, keep up the good work! :)

Wow, -40, not sure I could cope with that!! :-) I caught the cherry blossoms in Osaka before, in mid April, thought I was going to be too late but we saw lots at the mint (it's in my previous series of videos). I didn't go to the fortress in Hakodate, but that's the same town we were in - the fortress is called Goryokaku. I didn't have very long there and we went up the mountain instead. To get to the fox village you need to get to Shiroishizao Station, which is on this shinkansen line, near Sendai. I believe there's a bus that takes you to the village from there. PS If you're staying in that area, take a look at Matsushima - we stopped there on the way back (video coming up"), it's a beautiful place only 30 mins train from Sendai.

What are the measurements on that blue suitcase, if I may ask?
@cakeswithfaces
3 жыл бұрын
My turquoise blue suitcase is the largest size you're allowed as hand luggage on an airline. On the bullet train you can fit a full size suitcase in front of your knees too if you need to (might be more uncomfortable if you're taller!). There were some updates about luggage on the shinkansen last year - they're in this video if you didn't see it already :-) kzitem.info/news/bejne/sp57m2uDgaecpKA

There's enough space for hand luggage definitely, not sure about a full size suitcase. There's enough legroom to put a large suitcase by your legs. There's also space for suitcases at the end of the carriage. I try to queue up and get on early to get it!

Do you know what is the nearest station to reserve the seat in Shinkansen going to Sapporo? We are now staying here near Ayase Station. No one here can help here to instruct. Thank you. By the way, we have JR Pass for 7 days.
@cakeswithfaces
4 жыл бұрын
You'll need to go to the ticket office at a JR (Japan Railways) station. That's a station on a JR line (eg JR Yamanote line). So if you get the train into the city, you'd be able to reserve at Ueno Station, for example. For shinkansen run by JR East, like the one to Hokkaido, you can also make the reservations online (that's where I did mine!) www.eki-net.com/pc/jreast-shinkansen-reservation/English/wb/common/Menu/Menu.aspx Hope that helps, and have a great time in Sapporo!
