Today we're tackling the steering rack which finishes off all the front suspension geometry... WHEW! It's been quite the ride but we made it through!
The main issue we're dealing with here is preventing "bump-steer" which is when the tires turn left or right when you hit a bump or pothole. It's not good... but luckily there are ways to avoid it! Ackerman geometry can also be affected by the location of the steering rack, but it is more a factor of the location of the steering arms on the knuckles (which we talked about in Episode 16) so we're good to go there.
You may think the factory GT6 rack should just plop back into place, seeing as it is what the car had from factory, right? Well... yes, the car's track width is about the same as before (a little wider) but the Crown Victoria suspension components are quite a bit longer than what we had before, meaning to keep everything working correctly, the steering rack needs to be shorter before!
Weird, isn't it.
We could look for an aftermarket rack, or a factory rack that's smaller, but to be honest, both of those options are pretty much non-existent due to the minuscule size of this car. While a center take-off rack or one with a travel bar were decent options, what we decided to do worked out perfectly and hardly cost a cent!

Where did we learn all this? The internet is an amazing place!
If you're new, our 1971 Triumph GT6 is receiving a transplanted 5.3l LS4 V8 and Mustang T5 gearbox... among others things... like a Corvette Dana 36 differential... and a bellhousing from a Jeep. So. It's not exactly your typical Triumph.
Next time we'll be figuring out a solution for an anti-sway bar (it's another "how hard can it be" situation...) so SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss anything!
